Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it acquired the feature film rights to Descender, the forthcoming comic book series from New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lemire and New York Times bestselling comic artist Dustin Nguyen. Josh Bratman will produce the film with Lemire and Nguyen attached to executive produce. The first issue of the eagerly awaited series will be published by Image Comics on March 4, 2015.

“It was a competitive situation for Descender, and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” said Lemire and Nguyen. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”

A sprawling, science-fiction space opera full of mystery and adventure, Descender is a rip-roaring, heart-felt cosmic odyssey about a little boy looking for home in a universe that hates and fears him. The incredibly lifelike artificial boy, TIM-21, may hold the secrets deep in his machine DNA to the origin of robots that have decimated entire planets. As a result, he is the most-wanted robot in the universe. Before long the entire galaxy is looking for TIM-21 and his rag-tag group of unlikely companions, as they make their way from one exotic planet to the next with new foes advancing on them at every turn.
Lemire is the creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder and Trillum. His upcoming projects include the original graphic novel Roughneck from Simon and Schuster, as well as Black Hammer with Dean Ormston for Dark Horse Comics, Plutona with Emi Lenox and A.D. with Scott Snyder. In 2008 and in 2013, Lemire won the Schuster Award for Best Canadian Cartoonist. He received The Doug Wright Award for Best Emerging Talent and the American Library Association’s prestigious Alex Award, recognizing books for adults with specific teen appeal. Lemire has been nominated for 8 Eisner awards, 7 Harvey Awards and 8 Shuster Awards.  He has also written such titles as Green Arrow, Animal Man and Hawkeye for DC and Marvel Comics.

Nguyen is best known for his work on American Vampire along with numerous Batman titles including: Batman Eternal, Batman: Streets of Gotham, Detective Comics, and most recently, Batman: Li’l Gotham, which has spawned its own line of toys, of which Nguyen is the designer.

IN CINEMAS ON 27 JUNE 2014

Starring:
Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson, Sam Shepard, Vinessa Shaw

Directed by:
Jim Mickle
Set in Texas in the late 1980s, Jim Mickle’s gripping noir thriller COLD IN JULY features a distinguished cast including Don Johnson, Sam Shepard, and Michael C. Hall in his breakout film role. COLD IN JULY is set for release across the UK on 27th June through Icon Film Distribution.

How can a split-second decision change your life? While investigating noises in his house one balmy Texas night in 1989, Richard Dane puts a bullet in the brain of low-life burglar Freddy Russell. Although he’s hailed as a small-town hero, Dane soon finds himself fearing for his family’s safety when Freddy’s ex-con father, Ben, rolls into town, hell-bent on revenge.

Michael C. Hall brings a shell-shocked vulnerability to his portrayal of Dane that contrasts perfectly with the grizzled badasses portrayed by Sam Shepard and Don Johnson. Directed with an excellent eye for the visual poetry of noir, this pulpy, southern-fried mystery is a throwback to an older breed of action film, one where every punch and shotgun blast opens up both physical and spiritual wounds. Twists and turns accelerate as the film reaches its inevitable destination: a gore-soaked dead end. COLD IN JULY is as muggy, oppressive, and hard to shake as an east Texas summer.

With all the heart and humour audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Big Hero 6" is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, "Big Hero 6" is directed by Don Hall ("Winnie the Pooh") and Chris Williams ("Bolt"), and produced by Roy Conli ("Tangled"). The film will be in UK cinemas from January 30th 2015.

MALEFICENT WEAVES ITS SPELL OVER UK & INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE

Disney’s bewitching live-action fairy tale Maleficent continues to conjure up box office magic in the UK this weekend, taking £6.6 million in just 5 days.  The film knocked X-Men: Days of Future Past off the number 1 spot after only one week and out-performed the Tom Cruise-starrer Edge of Tomorrow, as Disney’s “new” heroine proves just too powerful for this apocalyptic sci-fi movie.  Internationally, the film has taken a phenomenal $100.6M across 47 territories, which is the biggest ever Angelina Jolie live-action opening domestically, internationally and globally, and represents approximately 78% of the international marketplace.

Following the runaway success of Frozen, which is now the 5th biggest film of all time, Maleficentprovides audiences another twist on the idea of true love by exploring the relationship between Maleficent and young Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning.

“Everything you want from a fairy tale.”  BBCRadio 5 Live

“…truly magnificent” Evening Standard, 4 stars

“Just like Disney’s animated Frozen, it preaches the message that love can come in many forms and happiness doesn’t have to be provided by a handsome prince.” Sunday Mirror, 4 stars

“Dazzling” The Hollywood Reporter

“Disney’s empowerment of female protagonists, which snowballed in the delightful Frozen, continues apace in Robert Stromberg’s fantastical live-action fairy tale.” Press Association

Out in cinemas across the UK and Ireland now Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic Sleeping Beauty and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

Alongside Jolie and Fanning the film also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. Maleficent is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Michael Vieira, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

Strange turn of events from Marvel this evening.

It would appear Edgar Wright has stepped down as director from the long running development of Ant-Man, one of Marvels Phase 3 films. Variety reports that Marvel does have another director in the pipeline, but aren’t  saying who at this moment in time.

What seems strange about this development is that Wright has been attached to this project since it was announced back in 2006 and even showed test footage to an audience at Comic-Con in 2012.

In a statement given by the now former director, Wright and the studio split up “Due to differences in their vision of the film.”

It’s interesting to see what will happen now with this surprising news. But as there hasn't officially been any footage, its hard to say what can be expected from the film.

Ant-Man is currently slated for a July 2015 release.

When it comes to the Martial Artists many would argue that the Shinobi (aka the Ninja) were the most well rounded fighters out there. Their training covered a vast array of tactics, from covert skills such as espionage and assassination to more open skills such as grappling and open filed fighting. Now, hundreds of years later, there are still Ninjas and one is about to get his world decimated.

Casey Bowman (played by Expendables 3 actor Scott Adkins) has an almost perfect life, married to a beautiful wife Namiko (Mika Hijii) who is pregnant with his child. One day his idyllic life is shattered when he finds his wife murdered, with barbed wire marks around her neck being the only clue. With nothing else left to live for he decides that Revenge is his only course of action.

His quest for revenge will see him travel from Osaka to Bangkok where a chance event will see Casey uncover a similar pattern of death to the one inflicted on Namiko. This sets up a chain of events that will see our hero fighting for both his life and the vengeance he so desperately seeks all the way to the jungles of Rangoon. He is up against staggering odds, but when you have the variety of talents it takes to become a master Ninja things can quickly sway into your favour. Has this master bitten off more than any man can chew?

With a previous film behind him, director Isaac Florentine already knows the talents of his lead actor and allows him to display them throughout the film. For a Martial Arts film this is now essential as the days of air punches are long gone. Prepare yourself for a display of Martial Art skills that will take your breath away.

The film was originally released in 2013 and is now is available to own on iTunes.

Chris casts his eye as Batman V Superman gets a full title

Hot off the press today from Warner Bros, big news has dropped that Batman vs Superman now has an official title.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

This new comes just days after Warner Bros released the first official image from the set, showing (finally!) an image of Ben Affleck as Batman standing in front of the new Bat-mobile.

With the release of the film still a fair bit away however I can't help but feel this news, along with the other various casting announcements has been released far too early.

Looks like its back to reading comics for the mean time. I’m sure we will see a trailer soon. Right……?

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is released in theatres on May 6th 2016 and supports a cast of familiar faces such as Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane reprising their original roles from Man Of Steel along with new ones such as Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

While we’re on the subject, Rocksteady released the first gameplay trailer for Arkham Knight today also. Boy does it look pretty!
