Marvel Movie Madness

Today at 18:00 GMT Marvel Studios invited Press and fans to join them for an undisclosed event. Whilst there were no specifics given many hoped that it would address the recent rumours that have been flying around, as well as hopefully reveal some as yet unmentioned work. Unfortunately Backwards Compatible’s invite was lost in the post, but I was at another location… with a computer… and was able to follow the Liveblog online and can relay the details to you, our readers!

First off, the “standard” unveilings:

Sequels

Captain America 3 – 6th May 2016

Guardians of the Galaxy (as yet unnamed sequel) – 4th November 2016

Thor 3: Ragnarok (Ragnork means “The end of the world” as Marvel helpfully told us) – 28th July 2017

And what looks to be the ultimate end-of-it-all close to the story arc that has run since the first Iron Man…

Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – 4th May 2018

Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – 3rd May 2018

Yes folks, like Harry Potter and The Hobbit, Marvel is going two parter crazy. And yes, that’s the Infinity War as in The Infinity Gauntlet as wielded by the mad Titan Thanos (I’m assuming he’s going to do more than just sit in a chair in these two….)

Interspersed with these somewhat expected films, boy do Marvel have some goodies lined up for us.

Doctor Strange

…will hit screens on the 4th November 2016, though there was no confirmation of who is playing him, so Cumberbatch fans? Maintain your high alert status.

Next up is a long rumoured bit of news but something that will excite a lot of people:

Black Panther

will be starring in his own title to be released on the 3rd November 2017. Whilst he’s not known in the mainstream world so much, Black Panther is a pivotal character in the Marvel universe and it will be interesting to see the place he takes in the Marvel Films Universe. He will be played by Chadwick Boseman who, whilst a relatively unknown name, appears to have some serious acting chops. Some on stage banter between himself, Chris Evans and Robert Downey journey hinted at Black Panther playing a part in the next bit of exciting News.

Civil War

That’s right folks, It’s confirmed. Captain America 3 will reproduce what some of you will know from our podcast is the story arc that got me into comics, the Civil War. Quite how this will play out is unsure, but from the rapidly expanding cast of characters that Marvel are introducing it’s certainly beginning to look like something that could echo the epic scale of the Comic story line on the silver screen.

Hot on the heels comes a completely new and, as far as I am aware, unrumoured title.

Captain Marvel

And that’s not any Captain Marvel (and no, not Mar-Vell either), but the one and only Carol Danvers will be joining us on July 6thNovember 2018. This is HUGE news for comic fans and the cinema going public alike, as it will be the first proper film to feature a female lead hero and, some would say more importantly, beats DC to the punch as they are yet to announce a date (if any is forthcoming) for a Wonder Woman film. I’m really excited to see this character on screen as she’s always been an interesting, and wry, addition to the Marvel Universe. The release date could point towards a major patriotic intention, the original Carol Danvers was an US Air Force officer, time will tell!

In confirmation of something we discussed on the podcast a few weeks ago, Marvel have also confirmed

The Inhumans

No details were given yet as to cast or even character make up, but they will make their cinematic debut on the 2nd November 2018. We’ll have to wait and see whether the rumoured idea of replacing the X-men in the Marvel Film Universe with the Inhumans (like Pietro and Wanda Maximoff in Age of Ultron) will come to pass or whether they will feature Black Bolt and his royal family, or perhaps some mixture of the two.

Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to be both a Marvel comics fan and a fan of the superhero movie genre! Now… where’d I put that time machine….

Ongoing Reviews of both Flash Season 1 and Arrow Season 3 coming soon to the Watch section.

With two major DC shows hitting in the same week it is conceivable that we would have sidestepped one, but thanks to the magic of shows coming early to SKY our eager beaver Chris has been able to get the jump on the fastest man alive. His review is done but as it's a wee bit spoilery we have decided to release the review after the show has aired. From then on expect his reviews to come thick and fast for both shows as he tries to fly straight and be as swift with his writing as he can be.

“Open your eyes and get ready for the biggest surprise of your life. The Venice Beach Freak Show is right here! You will see the strangest creatures on Earth, the living wonders of the world; the most amazing people on the planet”

FOX UK has acquired the rights to both seasons of unscripted reality series Freak Show from Endemol, in a deal negotiated by Toby Etheridge for FOX and Gisela Asimus-Minnbergh for Endemol.

Season one is 8 x 30 minutes and stars former music producer Todd Ray, following his dream to own and operate a freak show on the famed Venice Beach boardwalk.Bringing together all things bizarre and unique, including two-headed animals, strange artefacts and human wonders, Freak Show features a plethora of one-of a kind performers and death defying stunts, all the while delving deeper into the personal lives of these fascinating entertainers. The series is an Endemol USA production for AMC and will premiere on Wednesday 26th November at 10pm First on FOX.  FOX viewers can get a sneak-peak of the upcoming series as a special preview airs straight after the launch of twisted horror anthology American Horror Story: Freak Show tonight (21st October).

Toby Etheridge, Head of Programming and Scheduling, FIC UK, commented: “We’re thrilled to be back in business with Endemol on this AMC unscripted gem, which will perfectly complement our Autumn line-up on FOX.”

Cathy Payne, Chief Executive of Endemol Worldwide Distribution adds: “Freak Show is a fascinating look into the real lives of an amazing group of entertainers portraying characters that never cease to capture our imagination.”

Todd traded in the glamour of his high-powered music career and dedicated his life to the pursuit of the amazing and insane.  He opened the Venice Beach Freak Show - his goal:  to become a modern day PT Barnum and surpass ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not’ as the premiere destination for the strange and unusual.

With a family to support and everything on the line, Todd's under constant pressure to come up with new, mind-blowing attractions every week. Whether he’s recruiting amazing talent like Brittany and Abby (Siamese twins whose two heads share one body), procuring a “one-of-a-kind” human Cyclops, or dreaming up a stunt of shooting Larry the Wolf Boy out of a cannon over the Venice Beach Boardwalk...Todd is forced to push his ambitions higher and higher to keep tourists flowing through the freak show's doors.

With unprecedented access to this hidden world, get to know the people behind the wonder. Freak Show is a celebration of what makes people different and unique. Todd and his troupe of performers are actively trying to re-define the work freak as a positive. All of the performers have an undying loyalty for Todd Ray - the man who brought them all together with an exuberant admiration for their marvellous traits and genuine reverence for the human wonders that they are.

Each episode will present a new series of challenges and obstacles for Todd to overcome, as he dreams up the wildest ideas imaginable and obsessively seeks out the most extreme specimens and performers in existence, no matter what it costs or where they’re located.  We’ll explore this extended family of freaks and delve into the human stories that make them each relatable.

Don’t miss the real FREAK SHOW, Wednesday 26th November at 10pm First on FOX.

Preview of The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1; premiering Monday 13th October 9pm, First on FOX

Please beware we will not spoil this episode but will point to events from the Previous seasons.

The pace of the Walking Dead in its entirety is a bit of a mixed bag, we have had fast paced action scenes, slow tension filled escapes and even slower looks into the human constitution and idea of civilisation. This mixture has helped grow the show over the past four seasons, as well kept the comic of which it is based running for over 130 issues.
When we first met up with Rick Grimes and the rest of the cast in Season one life was about mere survival but as time has gone on the idea of rebuilding the world has come into the forefront of people's desires. This led the group to what they thought would be their "Sanctuary". As we now know this ended up being more of a nightmare then anyone really anticipated, though not from the walkers but instead from other survivors. This examination of power and survival permeates this episode as we find out what happens in a direct continuation of the end of Series 4 and if the Terminus crew really are "Screwing with the wrong People".

It's a great opening to the season which has the ability to bring in new watchers with the small amounts of exposition that help fill people in. I will however tell you that it is better to catch up first but new watchers should not be afraid.

For those of you loyal watchers then the pay off is hugely rewarding. The tension that is created from the last season comes to a head and should grip most viewers throughout the episode. The pacing feels forgiving as the story ebbs and flows but be warned this is not for the faint hearted but what you expect anything less form The Walking Dead.

The making of the ‘human’ burger inspired by the launch of The Walking Dead Season 5 premiering Monday13th October 9pm, First on FOX

To celebrate The Walking Dead Season 5 premiering on 13th October, FOX UK have teamed up with London based food art creators Messhead to create a unique burger concept that will push normal levels of taste to it’s very limits. Their ‘human’ meat burgers are set to delight and horrify in equal measure, the recipe developed by researching historical instances of cannibalism. The concept was, of course, inspired by the Season 4 finale of Fox’s zombie thriller The Walking Dead in which Rick and the group found piles of bloodied bones on the floor at Terminus which looked like human remains – and gives a taster of what ‘Walkers’ from the series enjoy feasting on.

This clip features Chef James Thomlinson who created the burger and the reactions when it was served to the public!

The burgers were made from veal, pork and bone marrow to give them a unique and realistic flavour. No humans were harmed in the making of these burgers!

The Walking Dead is a fictional horror series featuring zombies. Set in a post- apocalyptic world, it is not glamorous. FOX UK does not condone cannibalism, at no point is human flesh used in our burger stunt.  The burgers are a mix of animal meat.
