Turtle Beach Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Ear Force Sentinel Task Force (PS4)
With every Call of Duty we get branded merchandise to go along with the ever increasing franchise, there are times where these can be considered cash ins but thankfully not all products are created equal. Turtle Beach has a reputation for creating gaming headsets that are a good mix of quality and affordability and so the case seems to be with the Sentinels. Coming in at the £80 price point they are not the most expensive on the market but considering they are wired they are reaching high on the cash list.
The wired component though is perhaps the sets greatest strength, without heavy batteries they are extremely light giving you hours of play with no neck strain at all. The is achieved as well by the fact the volume controls along with those for the microphone are located on a separate control unit. This can be a small inconvenience as it s a little on the heavy side but if not here the weight would have to be placed on your head. The wires also allow for the set to be highly adaptable as they work with the PS4 primarily but thanks to the headsets ability to be removed from the control unit they can also be used with mobiles, tablets and portable games machines like the Vita. Thankfully the microphone is also removable allowing you to use the headset on the street without looking like slightly odd. |
In terms of styling the set is black as you can see from the attached images; however they are firmly stamped with the COD markings. The Sentinel motif looks strongly influenced by the Spartan helmets made popular by the Ancient Greek civilisation and the plates are actually customisable if you prefer to show off the insignia of previous titles. It’s a nice touch but one I find myself a little perplexed by, I’m not sure I see the need for this level of branding on multiple fronts but either way it’s a nice option to have.
The real brass tacks of this set is however how they perform in sound and voice, on the vocal front I recorded a podcast using the set (which you can listen to here) again showing the adaptability as it can be used with PC. My voice came through well but two words of caution make sure the mic is firmly plugged in and not too close to your mouth. For the first point I admit I did not insert the jack for the mic firmly enough into the headset and thought I made a mistake in the set up, it was a simple mistake but one worth noting. To the second pint the mic boom is very flexible and can be manipulated quite easily however at very close proximity there was a tendency for feedback but this gain is easily rectified.
On the sound front the set perform to a high level, although they lack the customisation of some of the high end sets. I still found it easy to make out distinct sounds in the environment when playing. This is obviously especially useful in fps titles like COD as awareness can help you to survive, but for some the desire to have the fully surround sound experience may make this a headset to skip. If you desire an adaptable headset that is as much at home on the PS4 as it is on the Vita/Tablet/Mobile/PC and beyond then this could well be the perfect set.
