Gail Simone continues her Tomb Raider run with a strong second issue; the plot is a foot as a famous detective once said. The story is running the tightrope between mystical and plausible to a tee. This is something the Tomb raider games always had in abundance. You may have to kill a T-Rex in the original but you have a reason for the beast to be alive (albeit a little farfetched) and that helps the overall tone of the story. Admittedly towards the finale of the latest Tomb Raider game things did get a little mystical but the game had been building and so it seemed the next natural step.

This is also true of the beginning of the comic run; this issue gives us some answers as to why Lara is in her current predicament as well as posing a few questions as well. You get the feeling that this will not be an easy solve and in the end Lara will need as many of her friends as she can find. This will however put those friends in danger and in the end our intrepid Tomb Raider may have to decide what is more important her life of that of her friends (only a suspicion).

The story sees Lara doing a spot of Trans-Atlantic travel in order to unravel the mystery left over from Yamatai. The mix of action and exposition leans towards the talking side; we also have a few flashbacks centred on the Endurance and the Island. These are shown with a particular styling on the page; it’s a basic colour trick but works really well to make sure you know what’s going on. I’m not sure it’s truly needed as the story is not that convoluted but it adds to the quality feel of the production.

This series is building into a great companion for the series and its mix of action and dialogue seem pretty much spot on... Ultimately though this is a series builder issue and not a great standalone but that makes it perfect for the long haul. It looks like Dark Horse have secured a real winner here and I hope the series has the payoff it deserves in the coming months.

Issue Rating 3.5/5
