The ability to wrap a series is a skill all of its own, I do prefer to judge a story by its journey but when the ending hit homes it can make a series feel all the better. I have already professed my love the God of Thunder series on a previous podcast and truthfully the ending lived up to the rest of the series. The storytelling ability of Aaron has allowed the three eras of Thor to be filled with drama and a sense of whatever next. This issue is no different as the story is being told by the Granddaughters of old king Thor in the future, this allows us to find out about the origins of Malekith (drawn by RM Guera, colourist Giulia Brusco) as well as history lesson about the battles Thor fought as a younger man (drawn Simon Bisley).
It is however the final section of the book that is perhaps the reason this book is a must read. In essence this is a perfect jumping on point issue as the story is self contained and sets up the future Thor series perfectly. We all know that the new Thor will be a woman and in this issue Aaron sows the seeds for why this hand over of Mjolnir comes about. I will say that it seems I was right that is a short term changeover, we are led to believe this is in old King Thor’s past so the change is likely to revert at some point. One thing however you can bet on is that the strength of the character is in good hands with Aaron. Unfortunately it seems his collaboration with Esad Ribic and Ive Svorcina is at an end on this series. The work of the art team on the series has shown that a long term vision can help to create something truly great and I hope Marvel keep this in mind when they decide whether to move artists around on books or keep the status quo. Of course a new team will hopefully bring the same level of quality even if there is a change in art direction. This issue was called a God sized issue and it felt worthy of that title. If you enjoy the mythos of Thor then this is a great read and if you are looking for a place to come into the series this is a rather odd yet perfect place to jump on. I will miss this series but Aaron has made me intrigued for the future. Issue Rating 4.5/5 |
