Review - Thor (2014) #1Review by Paul Fiander

I think the best place to start with this issue is the end, the first letter in the “Hammer Grams” section is a bit of an attack on the new direction of this series. Aaron’s response is strong but balanced; there is a certain aspect of pre-prepared statement about the letter and its response. This feels a little like a justification but it comes off well thanks to Aaron’s writing. The fact that it was felt this should be the lead of the letters section says something about the reaction to the new intended storyline.
I however prefer to find my proof in the reading and this feels very much an establishing issue. We get to find out a little bit about why Thor is no longer the wielder of Mjolnir. Even though we do not get the full story it is eluded to in such a way that we know Original Sin is the catalyst for the loss of the hammer. With the true nature of the Sin still shrouded in mystery instead we get see how Thor copes with the loss and how his family and friends help him. The balance of power between Odin and Freyja is by far the most intriguing interplay in the issue and helps understand quickly that this is not a book for shrinking female characters. The front of the book is devoted to the rise of the Frost Giants into Midgard and this helps us to understand some of Thor's motivations. The attack is orchestrated by Malekith and you can feel his presence coming off of the page. Hats off to the art team it is not quite to Esad Ribic's level but it really looks like a strong visual read. Russell Dauterman on Art and Matthew Wislon on Colours have followed one of the masters and stamped their own title on the pages of this issue and hopefully the series to come. This is very much a Thor book Aaron has the voice and the world around down to a tee. My main reservation is that the Issue has a fill in the blanks feel to it near the beginning based around the Original Sin. Ultimately this first issue has me wanting a lot more from this series and that should always be the Job of a Number 1 to hook the reader. *Little spoiler we still not get see who the new Thor is just that she is the worthy one.
