Review - The Wolf Among Us; Episode 5 - Cry Wolf

The fifth episode of the adventure series based on the popular Fables comic book series, Telltales “The Wolf Among Us: Cry Wolf” ends without leaving any trace that it was there in the first place. Failing to stand out as memorable, clever or interesting, the game feels like a marketing tool that has successfully wet my appetite for the comic book series, with the game ending on a splash screen to purchase the books, a gentle reminder to start reading the comic if I want to learn more about the story.

Closing the case on the story that has unravelled in front of your eyes since the first episode, players continue as Bigby, the once Big Bad Wolf and the current sheriff of Fabletown, a hidden society of fairytale creatures living in New York City. Starting where the player left at the end of a forgettable episode 4, the action begins quickly and it’s not long before the episode concludes. With no feeling that your choices have mattered through the fifth episode, which also lacks the “detective” feeling of some of the other episodes. I stand by my belief that the series would have been better suited to a longer, more worthwhile three episode structure. With the game split as it is, it’s left with more bad entries than good. I felt rushed to finish the boring action sequences (which focused on timed keyboard inputs), hopeful of an interesting or surprising end. All this nothingness must be leading to something big.

The Wolf Among Us has let me down. The first episode, “Faith”, set the mood and pace for an interesting detective story. I wanted to crack that case. Since then the series has presented more bad episodes than good, with the third episode bringing back some of the elements that made the first one stand out. Episode 2, 4 and 5 are simply missable.

I wouldn’t recommend The Wolf Among Us. You’re not missing anything and you’d be better of spending your time, and probably your money, purchasing the comic.
