The end of the last issue left Geralt in a rather sticky situation, this however gives the perfect opportunity for Joe Quireo to flex his artistic chops. The mixture of weapon and magic in the combat scenes feel really energetic as our hero pulls out all the stops to avoid getting killed or worse. The variety of art needed to complete this book is rather interesting as you have everything from humans to monsters, wolves to stain glass windows. Each feels like it has the amount of loving attention from the artist and colourist (Carlos Badilla).

The art team also have to deal with rather a complex character in this issue and that is the Mansion, it feels like it has almost a life its own. Now we have had a chance to explore the inner workings of the place the scope of the place amazes me. It does not however feel as haunting as the wood that surrounds this may be due to the openness of the rooms. This makes the fear come not from the house itself, instead the inhabitants provide all the fear factor in the book.

The story itself does help to give us more insight into Jakob but its Geralt who we learn the most about from his failure to answer questions. I like the fact he does not fill the pages with a deep look into his past. A central character with a secret can be deeply intriguing unfortunately more often than the not the exposition of the past can actually degrade the character. You can read my thoughts on this in regards to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader here.

Part of me though on reading issue does wonder if our Witcher has a death wish as he always appears to take the path of most resistance. With his amulet you would expect him to be prepared at all times but either it’s a little faulty or he is not the best at utilising its power. This does leave the opportunity for more than one life or death struggle but also waters down the strength of the Witchers non-combat powers.

The Witcher has so far been a great read the story ebbs and flows between exposition and action at a fair pace. If you are looking for the best game tie in book then this should be in the running. However there are a few worries as the story continues most notably how can Geralt keep putting himself in harm’s way. I hope the mini-series has the ending it deserves but only time will tell, one thing is for sure I will be reading to the end.

Issue Rating 4/5
