Honour among thieves is an odd idea. It stands for a criminal code of ethics that is supposed to keep gangs and other criminals in line. However what happens when a new player arrives who does not respect the code, in a word Chaos. This is what the White Suits in this story seem to represent to the status quo, a new and unknown entity hell bent on destroying the peaceful co-existence of New York’s criminal hierarchy.

Within this web of rivals is a man with retro grade amnesia who does not know who he was but knows he was a violent man. Our unknown entity seems to be the key player of the story as he is the one who introduces us into Frank J. Barbiere’s work from the outset. His memory is patchy and these patches are the reason he knows he was a violent man, but just how dangerous is the real question at hand. We are teased with a little bit more information and I hope this pays off in future issues.

As for the issue at hand this is a strong opening stanza for the creator owned series, The artwork is strong with black and white panel depictions. However colours do enter the art at key moments to represent among other things blood, hair and gunfire. These flashes of colour help give the panels they are in more pulling power for your visual attention. Toby Cypress does a great job with the art and varying the character models, this gives the cast a measure of uniqueness and helps to keep the panels filled with interesting focal points. Speaking of which the action sequences are filled with fluidity that will keep you captivated throughout all of the confrontation scenes you see.

The story itself has multiple angles as we get to our memory impaired man try to take back a measure of his control. As well as look inside the White suits and the targets of their attention. The viewpoints all interweave nicely into a cohesive narrative and there are a more than a few tasty morsels as to where we can expect the series to go. The ending is a great cliffhanger although not unexpected I just hope the rest of the story lives up to this opening issue.

Thematically this is a gritty look at crime, no punches are held back within the artwork, this really is a book that deserves your attention.
