A New Beginning
We have dabbled in coverage of the Walking Dead from time to time but this issue feels like the perfect place to start a more thorough examination of the comic that has founded a franchise.
This new beginning starts off a lot like the series of old with a group being surprised by a walker, however the scale of the threat is hard to imagine until you see the amazing job Charlie Adlard has done. There is one double page spread that needs to be seen to be believed and it does an amazing job of helping the reader understand the world this story inhabits. For more than a decade the Walking Dead has been building the idea of a character driven narrative and Robert Kirkman certainly can do this better than most other writers. In this issue we get to see him flex his narrative chops as we find a new Beginning following the All Out War. The land of Alexandra is truly a work of civilisation and from the way it looks to the slightly mundane conversations about the way it runs you get the feeling the survivors are beginning to do more than just that. The returning to the pre-technological era has a certain rustic charm to it, the survivors are starting from a place of knowledge but they still need to acquire new skills. It’s an interesting look at the way people can adapt to things that are thrown at them and also the skills that will be relevant in a non-technological world. There is a saying by John C. Maxwell that states; “In most cases those who want power probably shouldn’t have it” and in Rick Grimes we seem to have the embodiment of this statement. He has always been a natural leader but he never took his leadership instead he fell into the role, this appears to give him the ability to think for his people instead of just himself. This is very much a sit back and look at where we are issue, it has its moments of high drama which are created as well as ever but again it’s the inter-relationships between the group that make this book what it is. Some call the Walking Dead a soap Opera with Zombies and this issue does a lot to reinforce this idea. This feels like a perfect jumping on point for new readers and I would encourage anyone who is even slightly interested to jump onboard.
