The continuing story of The Star Wars begins to bring in a strong political side, it feels very much like episode 1 (The Phantom Menace). You can see the blueprint for the prequels in this issue as Lucas tried to bring in the governmental side of war as well as the actual battlefield action. As yet there is not the long convoluted web of intrigue that infested the latest films but there is still room for that storyline to be added (I really hope that it does not come in). Even with the political storyline running through the issue we do get a wonderful action set piece with the Space fortress coming to the fore in full effect. It is by no means as powerful as the Deathstar (at this time) but it still appears to be a force to be reckoned with. As with the rest of Lucas’s work you can see references being created to older work in the case of the aerial battle old World War 2 films spring instantly to mind. The radio chatter and even the formations the ships create, point towards the dog fighting scenes we (of a certain age) have seen on many occasions. However they seem a lot more realistic than the formations the rebels use in all of the films, giving the story a more authentic feel. |

I have not read the original screenplay so this is a new story and some aspects are interesting like the use of names and places that have been used in the film. I wonder why the decision was made to alter the name Starkiller to Skywalker was made? In truth both names sound odd but as I have grown up with Skywalker it just sounds normal to me at this point. Its little changes like this though that creates freshness to the story, which is a pleasing turn of events.
What is becoming evident to me though is the complexity of the story with multiple plots being played out at the same time. In this way I struggle to believe that The Star Wars would have been as good a film as the original trilogy, obviously we will have to wait and see at the conclusion of the story to see. With the comic medium the story feels like it has a perfect home and I would love to see an expended universe created around this story. For now though we will just have to wait for episode 3 coming in a few weeks time.
