Review - The Mice Templar IV: Legend #12Review by Paul Fiander

I am a relative newcomer to the canon of Mice Templar, I am up to date with Volume four but there are gaps in my knowledge from the earlier sections of the run but for the most part this is a series I have thoroughly enjoyed. So it was with a certain level of trepidation that I responded to a call for the chance for an advanced preview of this issue with the caveat that I post my initial thoughts to Facebook in a non-spoilery way as soon as possible. My thoughts read;
“Wow, a truly original vision that will capture readers and is sure to cause a big impact in the Comic’s world” This was followed by another less wordy quote of “Oh crap this is crazy”. I stand by both quotes and I know that is a little bit of a spoiler but truly there are times when hyperbole feels justified and this is one of those times. But why the kerfuffle I hear you ask? It centres on the principle of a new creative vision; basically every page is a splash page depicting a battle as it unfolds. You get 11 double pages filled with action and story. The imagery feels fantastic but it would not work if the characters were not so easily recognisable, it can feel like playing Where’s Wally at times as the players move around the page but for the most part each timeline is easy to follow. Victor Santos is one of those artists that seem to be able to create really compelling visual narrative and together with colourist Serena Guerra they really are at the top of their game. The narrative really only centres on the battle of course there will be repercussions concerning what unfolds through the pages but this is a singular vision that concentrates on telling the story of a single confrontation. The twists come naturally from page to page and I would implore readers to read and not flick through as visually you will spoil the story before you get a chance to read what’s happening and that could spoil your enjoyment. Bryan.J.L.Glass is in full control of the written narrative and he has done a great job in not letting the art completely over run the issue. I did say earlier that is a great piece of comic craft and I do stand by that statement. The Issue is inventive in the way it tells its story. If like me you like to try something different in your comic consumption then this will be up your alley and well worth the price of admission. |
