Dean Cain & DC Universe Panel

1/8/2017

In this report I am covering the individual Dean Cain panel on Saturday and the DCU one that Dean attended with Michelle Harrison (Nora Allen in Flash) and Joe Dinicol (Ragman in Arrow) on Sunday.

Dean Cain - Saturday

After attending two panels with Dean Cain on Saturday and Sunday what comes through from him is how grateful he is for the roles he has had and the affection he holds the fans in. Of course appearing at a fan convention you would expect him to be complimentary but he really means it 'when we film the show we obviously don't have any fan interaction so to attend cons and speak with the fans about the show is really important' he said. 'Dean you are my Superman' said more than one fan and he was very grateful for this.

Cain doesn't believe in the 'Superman curse' and also has no issues with being typecast. 'I'm proud to be associated with Superman and Supergirl, I've done about 120 tv shows/films so I've been very lucky'.

In Sundays panel Joe Dinicol remarked to Cain 'to be associated with something so iconic is very cool, to be someone who people grew up with is wonderful'.

Cain admitted to having 'a moment' when he first put on the suit 'it didn't have the 'S' on but still, you stand there and drink it in'.

The costume was also very uncomfortable, 'it was lyrca with polyester and yeah, it wasn't great', they tried to improve it over the years but it didn't really happen, when I see Melissa's (Benoist - Supergirl) costume I touch it (not there! big laugh) I get jealous as they are so much better now'.

He was asked about the current Superman (Henry Cavill) and the forthcoming Justice League movie.

'I don't think you can conpare, on Lois & Clark, so was playing Clark, he was the main character in the series, not Superman'. He hopes that Justice League has enough character development 'the best (comic book) films in recent years for me have been Deadpool and the first Guardians of The Galaxy, because they focused on character, GOTG2 wasn't as good as the first, I thought it was a bit muddled'.

Cain then discussed an andedote about filming Supergirl season two ***potential spoilers***

'I asked if they could cast Kevin Sorbo in the series as Terri Hatchers husband (they did) and he's obviously killed off by Terri, it's funny as me and Kevin are buddies and we were the last two down to be cast as Supermam in Lois & Clark, I obviously won so there was great symmetry there, a couple of years later he was cast as Hercules so it all worked out well'.

Cain was then asked about any roles that he had missed out on. It was then that he briefly discussed his personal life. Cain was involved in a custody battle for his young son back in 1999/2000 and won. Winning the custody battle had a profound effect on himself and his career.

'I was adamant that I would not be an absentee father, so while my son was growing up (he is now 17 and going to college shortly) I decided not to take any jobs which were not in LA or within short travelling distance. I was offered many roles, one in particular would have made me the highesr paid actor on TV at that time (he refused to name the show when pressed but did reveal that he had to turn down a role in Spielberg & Hanks 'Band of Brothers' but my son came first'.

'He's now 17 and I can't get rid of him' he grinned.

On his potential appearance in the third series of Supergirl Cain said 'they've started already, they hardly have a break, there have been some talks so we'll see'. From where I was sitting I think it's safe to assume we'll be seeing Jeremiah Danvers in season three 😊.

DCU Panel

Dean Cain (DC) Michelle Harrison (MH) and Joe Dinicol (JD) answered fan questions on Sunday.

Q: You are all DC actors, would you play a marvel character and if so which one?

DC - Absolutely! I'd play anyone who they paid me to be! (Laughter)

JD - I would definitely play Spider-Man, that would be cool. Tom Holland's doing a pretty good job though at the moment (Don't worry Joe, that role gets recast all the time!).

MH - It's not a marvel character but I'd love to play Wonder Woman, Linda Carter was a hero of mine growing up.

Q: Joe - will you be in the next season of arrow?

JD: I don't know, never say never, I guess I can as I'm not dead (that hasn't stopped the arrow verse before!) so we'll see.

(There was a brief discussion on Dinicol's casting, he only found out that he had won the role of Ragman four or five days before he started filming, so he had little time to prepare. It was put to him that this was surprising for such a big show but all three actors acknowledged that this isn't uncommon).

Q: If you could be another character on the show who you be?

JD - Supergirl!! (lots of laughter)

MH - Well I haven't had much of a chance to do much, most of my appearances as Nora have been filming my death scene again and again (it was asked if her death scene were filmed just in one season but Michelle confirmed she has come back every season to film'. So I think Killer Frost would be great, to play a villain, with her distinctive look and hair.

DC: I would like to play Hank Hemshaw or even Cyborg Henshaw, they would be different characters to play and David Harewood (who plays the character in the show) is great. It's very funny when he plays Martian Manhunter as he has to walk around being heroic with lots of dots on his face (for the CG)!

Q: (I was fortunate enough to ask the last one)

Dean - Lois & Clark famously finished on a cliffhanger (there was a baby subplot which was never explained due to Terri Hatcher being pregnant in real life and unable to film, making the studio decide to cancel the show). With the multiple universes in Arrowverse could we see a visit to a world with Lois &a Clark in it and would you play Superman again?

DC - Yes!! I always thought it was a shame that we couldn't finish the story arc off in Lois & Clark, I would definitely love to see where those characters are 20 years later. I'm not sure if you could do it in a regular season or perhaps do a six-eight episode run, but yeah I'd love to, we've spoken about it before and yes of course, I'd love to play Superman again!'.

The panel ended as all three actors received a standing ovation.
