Review - Sex Criminals #1Paul Fiander

Story by; Matt Fraction
Art by; Chip Zdarsky |
Is a newly created series and the first issue was released on the 25th of September 2013 which you can read here. The second issue was released on the 23rd of October.

We open up though with a really well crafted paragraph named Previously, as recaps go it’s one of my favourite. It jogs the memory of what happened in the last issue but also is vague enough to make you want to go back and read the first issue.
In Issue #1 we were introduced to Susie by the lady herself. Now in issue 2 we are learning about her partner in crime Jon. The previously theme continues on the opening page as we are again in present day in mid heist, to say the poo hits the fan at this point is too put it mildly. It appears that there are other forces involved in the ‘Quiet’ but more of that is to come in the future I’m sure.
The journey into Jon’s past fills the majority of the pages and unlike Suzie’s story his seems more mundane. There is no turning to masturbation as an escape, instead it’s just a tale of a boy’s discovery of sex and the effects it has on him and his environment. His story has it’s funny moments and I have more in common with Jon then I care to admit. Apart from his version of the ‘Quiet’ which he calls ‘Cumworld’ he and Suzie seem to be very in tune from their humour to their feelings on sex. However it’s the differences that make them a complex couple and one that in the end may lead to the making or breaking of their relationship.
The comedy still runs through the issue just like the first, with one particular sequence with a porn star called Jazmine St Cocaine a particular highlight. Suzie’s interaction is again breaking down barriers but it looks like that will be her role throughout the story and a better navigator I do not think we can find.
At the end of the issue we return to the present with a chilling sequence where one panel makes a huge impact. I contains only one word Ch'#+£%".
