Samurai Jack continues to be a breath of fresh air in my comic pile. The art mixed with the light hearted story are a genuine monthly pleasure. In case you are unfamiliar with the story at large the second page in has a wonderful little recap from the Shape Shifting Master of Darkness himself. Now Jack finds himself searching the future for the threads of time.
The best colour to describe this issue is blue. The setting is a frozen wasteland and it makes a stark contrast from the deserts we saw in earlier issues. However the need for our Samurai to search for the Thread is undiminished. There are of course the usual array of friendly townsfolk who are there to help but it’s obviously the enemies we want to see. In this issue some ideas are not the same as we have previously experienced. Firstly the main villain is a Queen of advancing age but she remains a young looking version of herself even after 88 years on the planet. She is not able to fight instead she has an assortment of guards called the Musket Knights to protect her. The question is can Firearms be more deadly than the sword of a Samurai? The art as usual is from the top draw the mix of motion and odd character designs is in keeping with the tone of the piece. I love the way Jack is globetrotting and getting to fight a variety of enemies allowing the art to change not only in scenery but also within the action sequences. It makes every new issue feel fresh like you have just discovered it. If you want a touch of the lighter side of things then I can highly recommend Samurai Jack but do yourself a favour go back to number 1 and enjoy the ride.
