When Robots collide could well have been an alternative title for this book. Voltron and Robotech both have enormously strong communities of fans loyal to the tales told within the Cartoons and other properties. The decision to bring them together in this format could have been a masterstroke of a catastrophe of Giant Robot proportions. From the first issue I’m pleased to say the former looks to be true.

Firstly the artwork in this story is feels very true to the original creations. The anime style especially when used on the Robot Lions (Voltron) looks incredible even if they only grace the page for a relatively short period.  I will have to admit of only being a casual watcher of Anime so please think of this as a casual viewer’s observation. However the art is fun and vibrant and this makes the book infinitely accessible to all ages. However when the Poo does hit the fan the colour palette used helps make the action like its coming off the page. The character models feel quintessential Anime and each has their own visual quirk. I have always loved the way the eyes are seemingly oversized within the Anime world and it does given even a not true to life character model feel a life like feel.

In terms of story this issue is very much a scene setter with the introduction of a number of characters in a short space of time. I cannot say you feel overwhelmed with information as the art allows you time to breathe between events. This can make this feel more of a leaf through book especially as the story is not totally gripping but as a jumping on point for the characters involved, it would be ideal. I think fans will just enjoy the time they get to spend with their in the world however until characters are better explored I’m still not sure if the voices for the characters will feel correct, but from the opening issue I do feel the properties are in pretty safe hands.
