Originally released last week on January 29, 2014 to widespread critical acclaim, Titan Comics is pleased to announce that it is going to a second print of Snowpiercer Vol. 1: The Escape just 48hrs after publication date due to exceptionally high demand.

Fans eager to read the story ahead of the worldwide release of the upcoming new movie adaptation starring Captain America’s Chris Evans have snapped up copies of Snowpiercer Vol. 1 as fast as stores get them. Volume 2: The Explorers is due to be released February 25, 2014.

In a harsh, uncompromisingly cold future where Earth has succumbed to treacherously low temperatures, the last remaining members of humanity travel on a train while the outside world remains encased in ice.

The surviving community are not without a social hierarchy; those that travel at the front of the train live in relative luxury, whilst those unfortunate enough to be at the rear remain clustered like cattle in claustrophobic darkness. Yet, things are about to change aboard the train, as passengers become disgruntled...

The thrilling original graphic novels have been adapted into a new film directed by Joon-ho Bong (The Host), starring Chris Evans (Captain America), Tilda Swinton (The Chronicles of Narnia), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott), Ed Harris (The Abyss) and John Hurt (Alien), and distributed by The Weinstein Company, and due for release in 2014. Check out the trailer below
Written by the late Jacques Lob, winner of the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême, and Benjamin Legrand, the author of numerous thriller novels, screenplays, and comic scripts, Snowpiercer is illustrated by Jean-Marc Rochette, who has worked across a variety of projects and genres, from science fiction comics to children’s cartoons – including adaptations of Voltaire’s Candide and Homer’s Odyssey.

Picture
Last week, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) committee published their much-anticipated 2014 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list, adding, for the first time, a top-ten list. Not surprisingly, given the tremendous success of Dark Horse’s 2013 publishing line, the publisher landed six titles on this year’s list, with two making it into the top ten--The Adventures of Superhero Girl and MIND MGMT!

This year’s Dark Horse selections are as follows:

  •       Faith Erin Hicks. The Adventures of Superhero Girl (978-1616550844).

  •       Sam Humphries and Dalton Rose. Sacrifice (978-1595829856).

  •       Matt Kindt. MIND MGMT Volume 1: The Manager (978-1595827975).

  •       Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo. Hellboy: The Midnight Circus (978-1616552381).

  •       Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover. Bandette Volume 1: Presto! (978-1616552794).

  •        Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson. The Massive Volume 1: Black Pacific (978-1616551322).

“Dark Horse has always considered librarians to be essential to the cause of bringing graphic novels to a broader audience, just as we feel visionary writers and artists push the boundaries of the medium,” said Dark Horse’s VP of book trade sales, Michael Martens. “With the selections of these titles to the 2014 YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens list, the boundaries will be pushed and the audience broadened! Thanks to both YALSA and our authors for making this happen!”

Dark Horse congratulates the editors, writers, and artists who worked on each of the above titles, and thanks the Young Adult Library Services Association for recognizing these works!

Dark Horse Update;  AN ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL FROM NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHORS MATT KINDT AND BRIAN HURTT!

24/12/2013

Comments

Picture
Matt Kindt, the award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of MIND MGMT and Red Handed, and Brian Hurtt, the award-winning, New York Times best-selling artist of The Sixth Gun and The Damned, are soon to publish Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon, the first in a new graphic novel series for children. The book follows the story of Poppy Pepperton, a ten-year-old girl with a typographic memory who goes on globe-spanning adventures with her sidekick Colt Winchester (who thinks he’s her legal guardian). Publishers Weekly announced last week that Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon will be published in 2015 by Dark Horse Comics.

When Poppy is summoned by Ramses MV, a reincarnated Egyptian king now cursed to remain in his lavish Manhattan penthouse (long story), she knows to expect something strange. Ramses doesn’t disappoint! He shows her Mummy Mouth, a shrunken mummy head that speaks a riddle once a year. Mummy Mouth gives her a clue that sends Poppy, Colt, and Ramses’s cat Krums to Old Macadamia to investigate the Lost Lagoon and an ancient civilization that lived on the back of a gigantipus (a giant octopus). Along the way she will find mysteries, adventures, friends, and family in the unlikeliest of ways. But a sinister robot is dogging their steps—is it programmed to help them or to stop them from learning an ancient secret?

“It’s been so exciting to see Matt thrive at Dark Horse, and I’m thrilled that he’s continuing that relationship with Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon,” said Dark Horse editor Brendan Wright. “He and Brian are bringing just the right light touch and level of imaginative detail to make a truly fun children’s book. It’s hard to believe this is their first graphic novel in the genre!”

Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson has acquired world English rights from Charlie Olsen of InkWell Management.

Matt Kindt is the New York Times best-selling and Harvey Award–winning writer and artist of the comics and graphic novels MIND MGMT, Red Handed, Revolver, 3 Story, Super Spy, 2 Sisters, and Pistolwhip. Brian Hurtt is the New York Times best-selling artist of the hit fantasy-western series The Sixth Gun. He burst onto the comic scene with the second arc in Greg Rucka’s critically acclaimed series Queen & Country and has since worked on the Queen & Country spinoff Declassified, Skinwalker, and DC’s critically acclaimed Gotham Central, as well as the DC series Hard Time and The Damned. Both authors live and work in the St. Louis metro area.

THE FIFTH BEATLE RANKS #1 ON NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLERS LIST!

15/12/2013

Picture
Vivek J. Tiwary’s debut graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle tops The New York Times bestseller list in its third week of release! The breakout novel sits atop long-established titles such as The Walking Dead and Batman. This news comes on the heels of announcing Peyton Reed (BRING IT ON, THE BREAK-UP) as the director of the film adaptation and the beginning of the casting process for the part of Brian Epstein.

Written by multiple Tony Award–winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, Mel Brooks’ The Producers) and painted by fanboy favorites Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman) and Kyle Baker (The Shadow, Plastic Man.)The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles—from their gigs in a tiny cellar in Liverpool to unprecedented international stardom.

Yet more than merely the story of "The Man Who Made The Beatles," The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Brian Epstein was homosexual when it was a felony to be so in the United Kingdom, Jewish during a period of pervasive anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town. He helped spread the Beatles’ message of love to the entire world, yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, consumed by staggering ambition and the endless struggles that came with it.

It looks like the combination of some great work by the creative team and publisher of the Fifth Beatle have helped one of the best graphic novels of recent times reach the fifth spot in the New York Times best-seller list.
On the other hand it could be the enduring love people have for the fab four.
I think its a combination of all of the above.
In our review we looked at how this is a book screaming out to be film. It reads in such a fluid manner it can be used as an amazing entry into comics. It seems otherS agree if the comments below are anything to go by.
We have also included the full press release just so you can read more about the actual book itself.
After an amazing show of demand for Vivek J. Tiwary’s breakout graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle sailed to number five on the New York Times bestseller list in its first week on sale!

Praise for Vivek Tiwary’s The Fifth Beatle:

“Tiwary and Robinson break new ground by spotlighting the Beatles’ discoverer and manager, Brian Epstein, telling his story in graphic novel form. Robinson and Baker’s artwork is colorful and fluid, with rich, deep color palettes capturing the mod energy of the ’60s.” - Publishers Weekly

“It's captivating, brilliant, funny, and tragic, and it artistically captures every mood and locale associated with this era of Beatlemania. It's a must-have for Beatles fans and fans of great storytelling.” – Comic Book Resources

“Emotionally powerful and visually breathtaking, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story is one of the best graphic novels you’re going to read this year.” - Newsarama

"The true highlight of this book though is the actual story, it's a meaningful look at the life of one of entertainments most enigmatic and up to till now unexplored characters. I highly recommend anyone to read it whether you are a Beatles fan or not". Backwards Compatible

Freshly freed from prison, Jackson Winters is given an offer he won't refuse: steal a ghost and keep his freedom. Winters, one of the greatest thieves in the world, accepts, gathers his team, and sets out for the Trask Mansion, home to horrors and haunts. The first four issues of GHOSTED sold out at the distributor level within days of the initial release and garnered early accolades from the media:

"Ghosted is a horror book you need to read because it is horror done right. It’s part caper, part ghost story, and completely hilarious."

"Never letting the audience feel completely comfortable trusting any one character, Williamson constructs layers of deception that add to the mystery of the series."
-Sam LeBas, Multiversity Comics

"Artist Goran Sudzuka has an uncanny knack of rendering detail only where needed, without overpowering every panel with minutiae."
-Jim Johnson, Comic Book Resources

Critically Acclaimed RPG Explores New Worlds at Dark Horse!
Picture

Dark Horse Comics proudly announces its next hit video game tie-in series, The Witcher, based on the critically acclaimed games by CD Projekt RED.

From Paul Tobin, the Eisner Award–winning writer of Bandette, with art by Joe Querio (Lobster Johnson, B.P.R.D.) and covers by Dave Johnson (100 Bullets), comes a riveting comic based onThe Witcher, a series of dark fantasy RPGs with a character-driven, nonlinear story set in a gritty living world and inspired by a series of extremely popular novels that have been translated into nineteen languages. The comic series introduces a new adventure featuring Geralt of Rivia—a witcher, one of the few remaining monster hunters.

“We’re very happy to be working with Dark Horse Comics, which is one of the biggest and most interesting comic book publishing houses in the world. What makes it even more exciting is the fact that, for many of us, the Dark Horse logo has near legendary status, standing for classic stories such as Hellboy or Usagi Yojimbo. We’re very happy to be once again expanding theWitcher universe,” said Adam Badowski, head of studio for CD Projekt RED.

Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, in the land of the Angren, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed man whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass, a place of endless rooms where horror waits around every corner. Geralt will have to use all his witcher prowess to solve the manor’s mystery and survive.

“We’re very excited to work with CD Projekt Red on The Witcher. With the rich world they have created, and an enthralling central character like Geralt, we feel The Witcher is ripe to tell a compelling story through comics,” said Nick McWhorter, director of custom programs at Dark Horse Comics.

With the two Witcher games already available, fans can get to know Geralt even before the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2014 on PC, PlayStation4, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft. The Witcher games have collectively earned over 270 awards and sold more than five million copies worldwide.

Fans can check out the exclusive interview with writer Paul Tobin only on Newsarama!

The Witcher #1 will be available for purchase on March 19, 2014, in comic shops everywhere!

Red hot fantasy-noir show Lost Girl is coming to MCM London Comic Con later this month, with stars Ksenia Solo, Rachel Skarsten and Executive Producer Jay Firestone. Get the lowdown on one of TV's most seductive series!

Produced by Prodigy Pictures and airing on Syfy UK, Lost Girl tells the story of charismatic and beautiful Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus who feeds off of sexual energy, sometimes with fatal results. Growing up with human parents, Bo has no reason to believe she's anything other than the girl next door – until she drains her boyfriend to death. While on the run, Bo discovers she is one of the 'Fae', creatures of legend who pass as humans while feeding off them secretly, as they have for millennia. Bo is forced to side with either the Dark or the Light Fae clans, but she stubbornly refuses to choose and remains an unaligned renegade who fights for the underdog, while searching for the truth about her mysterious origins.

Two-time Gemini Award winner Ksenia Solo (Black Swan, Life Unexpected) plays Kenzi, Bo’s street-smart and fiercely loyal human best friend. Kenzi's savvy and cynical nature makes her very protective of Bo. A human in a world of Fae, Kenzi is vulnerable, but her skills and heart have made her an integral part of the Fae world.

Rachel Skarsten (Transporter: The Series, Birds Of Prey) plays Tamsin, a Valkyrie mercenary and bounty hunter. Tamsin’s has a tough-as-nails attitude, but at her core she’s a much more complex and emotional Fae with lifetimes of hardship under her belt.

Award-winning Executive Producer Jay Firestone is the founder and president of Prodigy Pictures, a leader in the production of quality film, television, and cross-platform media. Prodigy has currently wrapped production of the fourth season of Lost Girl and is also responsible for the Franco-Canadian co-production XIII: The Series. Jay’s other credits include Andromeda, Relic Hunter, Mutant X and La Femme Nikita. Prodigy is currently developing an adaptation of the seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, as well as fantasy series Bedtime Stories and a sprawling space epic based on the titular comic Dark Matter.

DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES STUART MOORE AND BRUCE ZICK’S MANDALA

9/10/2013

Comments

New York Comic Con is still a full day away from opening its doors to the public, but we’re keeping the announcements coming! Today, Dark Horse premieres Mandala, an upcoming OGN written by Stuart Moore (Web of Spider-Man, Conan: The Mask of Acheron), with art by Bruce Zick (Thor)!

The earth—here and now. Humankind is secretly enslaved by a global mind-control cage called the GRID. Mike Morningstar and his spiritual spec-ops unit, known as “The Thirteen,” must alter time and take down the GRID before it’s too late. As fiction meets reality, the Thirteen need your help if they are to succeed in awakening humanity and changing the future. Are you awake?

“Mandala is probably the biggest-scale epic I’ve ever worked on: a saga of original sin and possible redemption that spans millennia and crosses the timelines,” said writer Stuart Moore. “At its core, it’s the story of Michael Morningstar, a guy who—like many of us—has to find his way in a world he doesn’t quite understand. The characters’ alliances shift constantly, along with the timelines.”

Artist Bruce Zick continued, “It’s been a total blast working on a project that brings together the diversity of world mythologies and stirs it all up into a cosmic, sociopolitical, crazy gumbo gestalt that just might make the reader ask themselves if they are truly awake.”

To read the first chapter of Mandala for only $2.99, visit Digital.DarkHorse.com—and make sure to stop by booth #1175 this weekend, where Stuart and Bruce will be signing throughout the show!
