Last week, Diamond Comic Distributors announced the 2013 Gem Awards, boasting a record number of accolades for Dark Horse!

While DC Entertainment topped the list with six awards, Dark Horse dominated among the independent publishers, with Dark Horse Presents winning Anthology of the Year for the second year in a row!

This year’s Dark Horse wins are as follows:

·     Licensed Comic Book of the Year: The Star Wars #1 (SEP138217)

·     Anthology of the Year: Dark Horse Presents #26 (MAY130015)

·     Trade Book of the Year: The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia (SEP120055)

·     Original GN of the Year: Hellboy: The Midnight Circus (JUN130031)

·     Manga TP of the Year: Lone Wolf & Cub Omnibus Vol. 1 (JAN130124)

“The comics retail community has been the backbone of Dark Horse since day one,” said Dark Horse’s president and founder, Mike Richardson. “It is truly an honor to have so many of our titles recognized by our retail partners, as this is perhaps one of the best ways to measure our success as a publisher. We thank all of the comics retailers who supported us in 2013 and hope to do even better in 2014.”

“We established the Gem Awards to give comic retailers an opportunity to recognize the vendors, titles, and products that have been instrumental in helping their businesses grow over the past year,” said Diamond’s president and CEO, Steve Geppi, in the Gem Awards announcement. “Our vendors work diligently to support retailers and the entire industry with top-quality titles and products, and we thank all of the retailers who took time from their busy schedules to vote and acknowledge those efforts.”

Dark Horse congratulates the editors, creators, and licensors who worked on each of the above titles, and thanks our retail partners for making 2013 one of our most successful years ever!

The Walking Dead's Tenth anniversary edition was the most purchased comic in October beating off a number of notable books including Batman #24 and Sandman Overture.

Robert Kirkman's work has continued to impress for the ten years since its launch and you can check out our review here

The stats recieved from Diamond showed other notable entries into the Graphic Novel section for Dark Horse with including the latest Avatar; the last airbender and Hellboy and the midnight circus and Image with the Saga series. However DC and Marvel still continue to dominate the sales figures but this month was a notable win for Image comics.

RISK: The Walking Dead Survival Edition is a fun, new twist on the classic Risk game play. The game features a brand new map set in the Southeastern region of the United States where players battle and scavenge for their very lives within 32 territories. Fighting for survival at every turn, gamers must not only fend off attacks from the living that compete for precious, limited resources, but they also must maintain their self-preservation from the unrelenting hordes of the undead that would feast upon them. The comic community with its readers, writers, publishers and distributors helped to form one of the most inclusive groups in any medium. I can remember no other entertainment form that have a day dedicated to giving away free merchandise, this day being free comic book day always the first Saturday in May. To go along with this day we also have Halloween Comicfest, a day where comic book shops all over the world invited people into their shops in order to celebrate the wonder of diversity present in comics. From Thor to Ben 10, Batman to Sesame Street there was an issue for everybody.

Thankfully we were able to get our hands on a great deal these comics and will be bringing a whole host of reviews over the next few days.
We will lead this off with Dark Horses itty biity Hellboy which you can read here.

The Comic and Book news has found its place due to the growth in reviews and publishers now linked with the site. You can subscribe to the RSS feed here.
We are happy to continue to bring the best content possible and hope this change will make your time on the site a more fluid experience.
As always please let us know if you like the new format or not and keep in mind, with the site's growth, we are looking for new writers to contribute to both the gaming and comic sides of Backwards Compatible.
