The comic community with its readers, writers, publishers and distributors helped to form one of the most inclusive groups in any medium. I can remember no other entertainment form that have a day dedicated to giving away free merchandise, this day being free comic book day always the first Saturday in May. To go along with this day we also have Halloween Comicfest, a day where comic book shops all over the world invited people into their shops in order to celebrate the wonder of diversity present in comics. From Thor to Ben 10, Batman to Sesame Street there was an issue for everybody.

Thankfully we were able to get our hands on a great deal these comics and will be bringing a whole host of reviews over the next few days.
We will lead this off with Dark Horses itty biity Hellboy which you can read here.

BIG IDEAS SCI-FI MEETS MID-LIFE CRISIS IN EGOs #1

Galactic heroes vs. cosmic forces—and their own worst impulses
This January, writer Stuart Moore and artist Gus Storms unveil EGOs #1, a twisted far-future epic. Years ago, The Earth/Galactic Operatives defeated Masse, a sentient, hungry galaxy—but now Masse has returned, consuming entire planets and killing millions of people. Deuce, an aging hero, decides to reform his old team and go into battle to save the day. But in order to do that, he must cross a line with Pixel, his wife and former teammate, an act that threatens to tear apart the life they've built together. EGOs sits at the intersection of a mid-life crisis, a galaxy-spanning threat, and the incredibly creative ideas that make sci-fi tales so compelling. "There are obviously echoes of other space-based super-teams here, but with darker, HBO-style characterization, and a twist at the end of issue #1 that hopefully comes as a surprise AND sets everything else in motion," says Moore. "I'm really proud of it—I think it's the best thing I've ever done." Moore has a long history in the comics industry, having written acclaimed runs on Namor,Firestorm: The Nuclear Man, and Wolverine Noir.He has also served as editor on several groundbreaking and classic comics series, including Hellblazer, Preacher, Daredevil, andTransmetropolitan. Storms contributed his fine line and attractive palette to 12 Reasons to Diebefore joining Moore on EGOs and defining the vibrant, ultra-high-tech look of the series.  Creators throughout the industry have praised EGOs ahead of its release: "I've known Stuart Moore since his days at Vertigo, and I always thought he was one of the very smartest minds in our industry. I'm delighted that he's writing a new book for my friends at Image, especially because EGOs is his best story yet."-Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, The Private Eye) "Stuart Moore was one of comics' greatest editors precisely because he's a great writer. Everything he writes demands attention."-Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary) "With EGOs, Stuart Moore's thoughtful writing style really comes into its own. I look forward to following this one as it develops—very highly recommended."-Garth Ennis (Preacher, Fury MAX) “EGOs sets up house at the junction of superhero stories and big-ideas sci-fi—then trashes the junction and builds its own huge, insane theme park.”-Mike Carey (The Unwritten, Lucifer) A preview of EGOs #1 will be appearing in SAGA #15, in stores on October 30th.EGOs #1 can be pre-ordered from the November issue of Previews (Diamond Code NOV130415) and will be in stores on January 15.

Angelina Jolie to direct and produce the film adaptation of "Unbroken"

Sometimes real life can be more astounding than any work of fiction and the story of Louis Zamperini must rank in the top rungs of amazing tales.
From meeting Hitler at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin to enlisting in the US Air Force his life was special. However it's his story while in the Air force that truly makes for a captivating story. After his plane crashed into the sea he and two crew mates survived for 47 days at sea, until they washed up at Marshall Island. Unfortunately the landing allowed them to be captured by the Japanese Navy, then as a prisoner of war he endured brutal treatment until he was finally released to go home.
His story was originally told in the Laura Hillenbrand's book "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” and the book forms the basis for the film.
Below are a few quotes from Zamperini & Joile who by all accounts have struck up a close friendship over the films development. We will have more news on the film as time goes on and the film gets closer to its sheduled release on the 16th January 2015
ANGELINA JOLIE: “It will be hard to make a film worthy of this great man.  I am deeply honored to have the chance and will do all I can to bring Louie’s inspiring story to life.  Everyone involved in the film shares this deep responsibility.  Like all readers of Laura’s book and all people who love and admire Louie, I am a fan who has learned so much.  He has made me a better person.”

LOUIS ZAMPERINI: “Angelina is a human dynamo, and I know she will tell this story in the right way.  I’ve received so many letters and talked to so many people who say that Laura’s book has helped them when they were going through hard times.  I believe the movie will reach even more people with that message.”

IT’S A BIG UNIVERSE. BRING A GUIDE.

Picture
CCP Games, the world’s leading independent developer of massively multiplayer games and creators of EVE Online, have partnered with Dark Horse Comics to deliver two amazing books as epic as the online universe from which they are spawned: EVE: True Stories & EVE: Source.

EVE: True Stories is CCP’s first graphic novel and features artwork by Alejandro Aragon (Overlook, 28 Days Later), Tomm Coker (Daredevil Noir, Near Death), Federico Dallocchio (Batman: Arkham Unhinged, Suicide Squad), Dave Ross (Star Wars: The Crimson Empire Saga) and Mark McKenna (Star Wars: The Old Republic). Superstar writer Daniel Way (Wolverine: Origins,Deadpool) will be writing the incredible true stories of the EVE: Online universe.

Inspired by actual player-driven events within the universe of EVE Online, EVE: True Stories adapts one of the greatest gaming stories of the last decade: the fall of the player alliance known as the Band of Brothers. In the early hours of February 5, 2009, one spy single-handedly destroyed the dominant Band of Brothers alliance and brought an end to the Great War, one of the larger and most significant player conflicts in the history of EVE Online. The first story arc of EVE: True Stories is a dramatized account of the action, intrigue and skullduggery that dismantled the galaxy-sprawling superpower.

EVE: True Stories comic issue #1 will be available digitally starting February 19, with subsequent issues following on March 5, March 19 and April 2, 2014.  An anthology of all four comics, EVE: True Stories Collection, will go on sale in hardback edition on June 4 in comic shops everywhere.

EVE: Source is a comprehensive sourcebook and visual guide for the immense universe of EVE Online and DUST 514.  Developed in close collaboration with the EVE and DUST 514 creative teams, this beautiful 184-page, full-color hardcover will immerse readers in the history and lore of EVE Online through never-before-released material detailing the settings, stories, races, and factions of the EVE Universe.

EVE: Source will go on sale March 5, 2014.

Brandishing his ninja sword and the mecha weapons in his cyborg arm, he slaughters zombies with brutal, over-the-top abandon.

Dark Horse Comics confirmed at New York Comic Con plans to continue the cult classic story line directly following the film. With executive producer Joss Whedon behind the helm, the comic series is sure to have fans clamoring to check it out.

“We've been dying to get more Serenity out ever since the book Joss and Zack wrote. We all loved Zack's work on Shepherd's Tale, and couldn't wait to get him back into the mix. This story is the first giant step past the film, after the big damn heroes stuck a big middle finger in the face of the Alliance,” notes Editor in Chief Scott Allie, “Zack establishes new ground rules for these characters. He nails the voices, takes the relationships to the next level, and just gives us all the best space romp since the film Joss made …”

With artwork by Georges Jeanty (Buffy Season 8 & 9), covers by Dan Dos Santos (Tomb Raider) and script by Zach Whedon (The Terminator) – Serenity returns as a cornerstone of Dark Horse’s 2014 lineup!

Malcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ’verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government—the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever, and everyone’s asking the same question . . .

“As a science fiction story, Serenity has it all.”—Broken Frontier

Fans can check out the exclusive interview with Zack Whedon on Nerdist and Georges Jeanty on Comic Book Resources!

Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64—Leaves on the Wind #1 (of 6) is on sale January 29th in comic shops everywhere!

Some great news for fans of the Wheddonverses favourite vampire slayers Buffy will be back for her 10th Season along with a new 30 issue run for the popular Angel and Faith series. Announced at New York Comic Con, Dark Horse is bringing the Whedonverse into it’s tenth season with the help of fan favorite authors, Christos Gage and Victor Gischler.

“In Buffy, Season 10 is going to be about bringing friendships back together, while in Angel & Faith, relationships are shattered. Magic is starting to come back into the world, but in some surprising ways, like that vampire we saw standing in the sunlight at the end of Season 9,” says Editor in Chief Scott Allie.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 is slated for 30 issues, written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Rebekah Issacs, with covers by long time series artist, Steve Morris.

“The Buffyverse community has been wonderfully welcoming to Rebekah and me. It's a tremendous honor for Joss and Dark Horse to trust us with their flagship book, and we are going to do all we can to be worthy of that trust. It's a new season, with new rules...but hopefully the same blend of love, action, horror, humor and creativity that's made Buffy and her Scoobies part of all our families. We hope you'll join us for the ride,” states Christos Gage

Angel & Faith is also slated for a 30 issue run, written by Victor Gischler and illustrated by Will Conrad, with covers by Scott Fischer.

"I was proud and privileged to have a small part in season nine, and I can't express how grateful I am to have an expanded role in season ten.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains an iconic television show, and the Dark Horse comics continue that great tradition.  I plan on having a lot of fun." Says Angel & Faith series writer Victor Gischler

“I'm very happy that our Angel & Faith artist has hopped over to Buffy, allowing our Buffy artist to jump over to Serenity. And to make the game of musical chairs complete, the guy who draw the first two Serenity miniseries is back in the loop, taking over Angel & Faith. These are all artists Joss and the writers and I are comfortable working with, and who are cozy with these characters, so it's nice to shake things up a bit while having a lot of confidence in what these artists can do. And I'm so happy to have Will back,” adds Scott Allie.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1 hits stands March 19th and Angel & Faith Season 10 #1 is on sale April 2nd in comic shops everywhere!

“Ten years in and THE WALKING DEAD never fails to surprise me.  I wanted our tenth anniversary to be a big event but I never could have anticipated this,” said Robert Kirkman.  “The level of support we continue to get from retailers and readers is astounding.  I only hope we can somehow top if for the 20th anniversary.”
