THE HORRORS OF WORLD WAR I IN WHITE DEATH

31/7/2014

Comments

Original graphic novel by Robbie Morrison and Charlie Adlard in September

Picture
Why this has Piqued our interest

Charlie Adard has the ability to create some truly arresting art and from the previews shown here it looks like he will be creating a visual tale with a tonne of impact.

The story itself will work within the context of World War 1 and if done well should be an interesting take on a rarely discussed area of the War.
“On a sunlit day in September 2013, 500 people attended a double funeral in the small alpine ski resort village of Peio, northern Italy. The bodies were those of two Austrian males, aged 17 and 18 years old. They weren’t, however, holiday-makers who had fallen victim to a tragic ski accident. Both had bullet-holes in their skulls and had been frozen in the snow and ice of the Presana glacier for almost 100 years. They were First World War soldiers who had fought in a relatively obscure part of that conflict, now known as the White War.” –From the introduction to WHITE DEATH

Image Comics is pleased to announce the September release of WHITE DEATH, a hardcover graphic novel by Robbie Morrison (2000 AD) and Charlie Adlard (THE WALKING DEAD). Set in the Trentino mountain range, WHITE DEATH follows Pietro Aquasanta, who, as a rifleman in the Italian army, returns to what was a realm of wonder adventure in his childhood during World War I, but has now become a sterile world of death and despair.

“‘White Death’ is a slang term used to describe avalanches in French and Italian Alpine regions,” wrote Morrison in his introduction, “and in my head, the avalanche became a metaphor for war — a terrifying, irresistible force that remorselessly consumes and destroys everything in its path.”

Heightening the tone of isolation and destruction is Adlard’s art — smudged and scratchy black charcoal and white chalk on a stark gray background that depicts the horrors of trench warfare and hand-to-hand combat. WHITE DEATH pre-dates Adlard’s arrival on the comics phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD, but his work on it informed the direction of his career.“I could do my OWN thing,” Adlard wrote in his introduction. “This, to me at the time, was a revelation. I hadn't been aware very much of the concept of creator-owned comics and, yet, here I was, doing just that. White Death eventually formulated my world view and opinions on where I wanted my career to go after this.”

WHITE DEATH is a 104-page black-and-white hardcover graphic novel. It will be in comic book stores on September 3 and bookstores on September 16.

The second issue of Robert Kirkman’s hot new horror series
sells out immediately, goes to 2nd printing to meet demand

Picture
On track to match the worldwide success of THE WALKING DEAD, the second issue of Skybound/Image Comics’ OUTCAST BY ROBERT KIRKMAN & PAUL AZACETA has sold out completely and is slated for a second printing. The first new series written by Kirkman himself in years, this demonic possession-focused horror comic builds on the mystery and mounting terror in its second issue and has hooked fans of classic horror and the entertainment phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD. Robert Kirkman and Fox International Channels announced late last week that Cinemax has green lit the pilot for Outcast. More news regarding casting and production to follow in the upcoming weeks.

Still reeling from the revelations of issue #1, Kyle Barnes is faced with the implications of what he’s learned about demonic possession and the time during his childhood when his mother was possessed by evil. Kyle must put the pieces together and uncover the truth behind why he seems to attract darkness and demonic activity at every corner.

After the momentum-building, successful launch of OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #1, readers snapped up this second issue to unravel more of the mystery behind Kyle’s nature. The issue will go into a second printing in order to meet customer demand. For fans of digital editions, OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #2 remains available for purchase across all platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com) the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

New hardcover edition collects first three volumes of acclaimed series

Picture
On Saturday, July 26 at San Diego Comic-Con, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples announced to a packed audience at the SAGA panel the November release of SAGA: BOOK ONE, the first in a series of deluxe hardcover volumes of their award-winning and beloved Image Comics series. Collecting the first three paperback volumes of SAGA, the 500-page-plus BOOK ONE will feature brand-new cover art by Staples. It will be released on November 25, 2014.

As Vaughan and Staples revealed in their Comic-Con panel, the cover of each hardcover edition will feature the series’ main character, Hazel. BOOK ONE’s cover depicts Hazel breastfeeding as an infant.

"Saga is the story of Hazel, and each hardcover edition will feature her at a different stage of life in a new cover from co-creator Fiona Staples,” said writer Vaughan. “I have no idea how Staples will top this first one, which perfectly captures our heroine's first few months in the universe. But we're even more proud of what's under the cover, 500 pages of story and never-before-seen extras, including a weirdly detailed creator roundtable about how the team makes a complete issue of our comic, from daydreaming to shipping."

Vaughan’s and Staples’ announcement came the day after they received three Eisner Awards at the annual ceremony held during Comic-Con. SAGA received a Best Continuing Series Eisner, Vaughan received Best Writer, and Staples was awarded Best Painter/Multimedia Artist.

Telling the story of a family escaping an interplanetary war, SAGA is an ongoing comic book series, released monthly by Image Comics. It has won a Hugo Award, a British Fantasy Award, and multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. All three volumes of SAGA have reached number one on the New York Times best sellers list, and volume one has been in the top ten for more than seventy weeks. SAGA's next issue, #22, will be in comic book stores on August 27. Three trade paperback collections are now available, and SAGA: VOLUME 4 will be in stores in December.

PRAISE FOR SAGA:

“...a great, star-faring epic about space-crossed lovers in an interplanetary war, their baby, who has horns, and robots with televisions for heads. It is strange, sexy, funny, delightful, and probably un-filmable, certainly for grown ups, and on every page, new.” –John Hodgman

“Vaughan’s witty dialogue is laced with universal commonalities—the sharp fingernails of babies, burping techniques, love—that ground the alien nature of the characters and heighten the sense that the war between planet and moon and the hatred between enemies is tragically pointless. Staples’s character designs are fantastic—even the weirdest aliens reveal human emotion—and her two-page spreads, whether of battle or of tree-grown rocket ships, are glorious.” –Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Vaughan’s whip-snap dialogue is as smart, cutting, and well timed as ever, and his characters are both familiar enough to acclimate easily to and deep enough to stay interested in as their relationships bend, break, and mend. While Vaughan will be the star power that attracts readers, do-it-all artist Staples is going to be the one who really wows them. Her character designs dish out some of the best aliens around, the immersive world-crafting is lushly detailed and deeply thought through, and the spacious layouts keep the focus squarely on the personal element, despite the chaotic cosmos they inhabit. Add another winner to Vaughan’s stable of consistently epic, fresh, and endearing stories.” –Booklist (starred review)

“With each new issue, Vaughan and Staples top themselves in cinematic grandeur and intimate character development. By taking inspiration from issues faced by ordinary couples—dealing with ex-lovers, finding a babysitter, meeting the in-laws—Vaughan is able to keep the fantastic plot grounded in reality, creating characters that are instantly relatable, even though they have horns or wings.” –Oliver Sava, The A.V. Club

“There is literally nothing I can say that will convince you of how utterly tremendousSaga looks, courtesy of artist Fiona Staples, more than actually looking at it will. Every gonzo, insane concept writer Brian K. Vaughan comes up with, Staples manages to realize on page in a way that’s never been seen before, but seems somehow authentic. But it's her character work that’s most amazing; you could take out every single word balloon and caption and still know almost exactly what’s going on thanks to the pitch-perfect expressions on the characters' faces.” –Rob Bricken, io9.com

Twelve announcements were made, including: Rick Remender and Sean Gordon Murphy’s TOKYO GHOST; Marian Churchland, Claire Gibson, and Sloane Leong’s FROM UNDER MOUNTAINS; JoeCasey and Paul Maybury’sVALHALLA MAD; John Arcudi and James Harren’s RUMBLE; Ray Fawkes’INTERSECT; Tom Neely and Keenan Marshall Keller’s THE HUMANS; Gabriel Hardman’s KINSKI and Hardman and Corinna Bechko’s INVISIBLE REPUBLIC; Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger’s SOUTHERN CROSS; Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s DESCENDER; Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein’s DRIFTER; Kurt Busiek and Ben Dewey’s TOOTH AND CLAW; and Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey’s INJECTION.

Picture
Rick Remender and Sean Gordon Murphy’s TOKYO GHOST:

TOKYO GHOST welcomes readers to the isles of New Los Angeles, 2189. Humanity has become nothing more than a sea of consumers, ravenous and starving wolves, sick from toxic contamination, who have to borrow, beg, and steal for the funds to buy, buy, buy their next digital fix. Getting a thrill, a distraction from reality, is the only thing left to live for. Entertainment is the biggest industry, the drug everyone needs, and gangsters run it all. And who do these gangsters turn to when they need the "law" enforced? Led Dent and Debbie Decay, constables of the law, which is a nice way to say “brutal killing machines." The duo are about to be presented with an assignment that will force them out of the decay of LA and into the mysterious lost nation of Tokyo.

Marian Churchland, Claire Gibson, and Sloane Leong’s FROM UNDER MOUNTAINS:

Set in the isolated country of Akhara, rival houses face off in the struggle for political power and military security in FROM UNDER MOUNTAINS. Three unlikely figures—a lord's daughter, a disgraced knight, and a runaway thief—will change the fate of their world, but the only hope of peace may lie with the mystery shrouded goblins and witches, and the ancient powers they command.
Picture

Picture
Joe Casey and Paul Maybury’s VALHALLA MAD:

VALHALLA MAD introduces a set of brand new characters: the Glorious Knox, Greghorn the Battlebjorn and Jhago the Irritator. The series depicts this

particular trio of fun-loving gods' return to Earth—Manhattan, specifically—to drink and party and revel in their resplendent godhood after many decades of being away. Needless to say, they find a very different world than the one they last visited.

John Arcudi and James Harren’s RUMBLE:

RUMBLE is a strange book, that’s for sure—like a scarecrow-Conan fighting in a Louis C.K. TV show directed by David Fincher—with a supporting cast of odd characters, many of whom aren’t even human.
Picture
Picture
 Ray Fawkes’ INTERSECT:

Bodies shift and merge, warring with themselves. Blood rains from the skies. A child’s song is translated into toxic, thought-destroying whispers. Everything is changing. Everything is wrong. This is the world of INTERSECT.

Picture
Tom Neely and Keenan Marshall Keller’s THE HUMANS:

Apart, they are nothing… deemed by society as outcasts, misfits, losers, no good punks! But together, they are THE HUMANS! Follow Bobby, Johnny, and all The HUMANS as they fight and fly down the road to oblivion on a ride filled with chains, sex, leather, denim, hair, blood, bananas and chrome.

Picture
Picture
Gabriel Hardman’s KINSKI and Hardman and Corinna Bechko’s INVISIBLE REPUBLIC:

KINSKI, previously a digital-only collection, both written and drawn by Hardman, promises to be a quirky crime thriller about Joe, a down-on-his-luck salesman who finds a cute puppy. The thing is, this puppy already has a home. What starts as a simple rescue mission from neglectful owners quickly escalates into a righteous crusade. Hardman announced a second project to be executed with frequent collaborator Bechko (HEATHENTOWN, Savage Hulk, Star Wars: Legacy). Described as a gritty sci-fi series, INVISIBLE REPUBLIC explores the secret history of one man's rise to power after an unspeakable act of violence elevates him to folk-hero status on a war-torn planet seeking independence.

Picture
Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger’s SOUTHERN CROSS:

Now boarding: SOUTHERN CROSS, tanker flight 73 to Titan. Alex Braith is on board retracing her sister’s steps to the refinery moon, hoping to collect her remains and find some answers. The questions keep coming though--How did her sister die? Where did her cabin mate disappear to? Who is that creep across the hall? And why does she always feel like she’s being watched?
Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s DESCENDER:

DESCENDER will explore one young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet.
Picture

Picture
Ivan Brandon and Nic Klein’s DRIFTER:

Mankind’s colonization of the galaxy has left countless planets mined bare and lifeless in DRIFTER. A space transport crashes onto a backwater world whose unique properties set the stage for a story that combines the dark wonder of a strange and alien landscape with the struggles of an abandoned and lawless frontier town.

Kurt Busiek and Ben Dewey’s TOOTH AND CLAW:

In TOOTH AND CLAW, a secret conclave of wizards brings a legendary champion back through time to save the world, with disastrous consequences. Swords, sorcery, animal-wizards, gods, empires, golems of radioactive decay, crystalline badlands, con women, ancient armories, young love, mystery, blood and death and treachery and destiny...TOOTH AND CLAW is an epic story you won’t want to miss out on.
Picture

Picture
Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey’s INJECTION:

INJECTION explores how loud and strange the world is becoming, and the sense that it's all bubbling into chaos—a chaos poised to become the Next New Normal—and that we did this to ourselves without thinking for a second about how we were ever going to live inside it.

“Each and every year, it is our goal to grow the comics marketplace with new creativity, and this current slate of talent is intent on doing exactly that,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “It’s nothing short of thrilling to be involved with so much unique and inventive talent, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work these amazing men and women are developing as we finish out this year and head into the next. We don’t pass out assignments or dictate directions here, we ask writers and artists what they want to do and let their creativity guide us. For some, relying on so much new material might seem like an uncertain way forward, but I prefer to look at every venture into uncharted territory as yet another path to the future. Thanks to these creators and more, that  future is looking brighter than ever.”

Why this has piqued our interest

Mike Richardson is more than just a publisher he is strong comic book creator as well. Any chance we get see him behind the pen is a chance worth taking notice of. The premise of this story also seems intriguing and who doesn't love a witty tag line.

SALLY OF THE WASTELAND #1
Victor Gischler & Tazio Bettin
32pp | FC | $3.99 | On-sale July 30
Why this has piqued our interest;

Grindhouse is something of a cult genre and I enjoy the films and comics immensely. Victor Gischler showed in Clown Fatale that he has his finger on the pulse on the genre and from the looks of thing this comic is in the same vein.
Picture
Southern Louisiana, 82 years after theFall. The apocalypse has come and gone, leaving behind a withered, ravaged landscape of wreckage and mutant crawfish. Still, you gotta laugh, and Sally does, often using her beloved shotgun, Bertha, as the punchline!

Inspired more by lust than common sense, and by a teenage desire to protect Tommy, theobject of her desires, Sally leaves her bar job and joins the deranged crew of the Mississippi Duchess on a mission into the remains of New Orleans.

Saving the remains of civilisation plays second best to keeping her sweetheart safe as our smart and sexy princess of the wild frontier runs a gauntlet of gigantic genetic freaks and roving gangs of blood-hungry barbarians!

The ever-so-cute but ever-so-slightly-insane Sally is the wayward daughter of writerVictor Gischler (X-Men, Angel & Faith, Noir) and artistic up-and-comer Tazio Bettin. This first issue in a fantastic new series proves Armageddon can be fun!

Issue #1 hits stores on July 30.
