SOUTHERN BASTARDS — BETTER THAN A HOME-COOKED MEAL

30/5/2014

Comments

The second issue of the southern crime series has sold out instantly, slated for a second printing

Picture
The second issue of the hit Image Comics southern crime series SOUTHERN BASTARDS, written by Jason Aaron (Scalped, Wolverine & The X-Men, Thor: God of Thunder) and drawn by Jason Latour (Loose Ends, Wolverine & The X-Men, Django Unchained), has sold out instantly at the distributor level.

"The response to this series has been completely overwhelming for all of us involved," said Aaron. "We're thrilled that all our favorite bastards are finding such great homes. And believe me, the bastards are just getting warmed up."

In SOUTHERN BASTARDS #2, it’s Friday night in Craw County, Alabama—a breeding ground for bastards and the setting for gritty, deep-fried crime—which means Coach Euless Boss is walking the sidelines like a god. And somebody is fixin’ to die.
You can read our review of Issue two of Southern Bastards here and Issue 1 here.

Praise for SOUTHERN BASTARDS:

"Exactly the kind of pulp goodness I live for."

—Ed Brubaker (FATALE, Captain America)

"Can I just take a second to recommend Southern Bastards by the mighty Jason Aaron? Literally the best book I've read this month. Order!" —Mark Millar (STARLIGHT, JUPITER'S LEGACY, Kick-Ass)

"Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour made me both terrified and homesick. Fantastic start, boys."

—Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye)

"Southern Bastards is perfection. There's this great, slow menace to it. Southern Bastards #1 is a perfect comic for you if you like to read... anything." —Scott Snyder (WYTCHES, Batman)

"You need Southern Bastards. Jason Aaron is back to southern-fried grit and Jason Latour is showing he’s one of the best cartoonists of our generation."

—Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, Punisher)

“The gushing about Southern Bastards is completely on point. Jason Aaron nails it (as usual), but Jason Latour is the rocketship here.”

—Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, Avengers)

“This series both pokes fun at and honors their shared roots. Aaron's gritty noir storytelling blends perfectly with Latour's sharp artwork, creating the ideal setting for a mesmerizing, down home crime story.”

—Comic Book Resources

“A proper Southern Gothic hiding in the skin of a trash genre, Southern Bastards is a must-read.”

—ComicsAlliance

SOUTHERN BASTARDS #2 has completely sold out at the distributor level, but may still be available in comic stores. It is currently available digitally on the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well as on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

Shianndrea Toshigawa is just your average, ordinary ninja -in -training. On the run from her father, the Emperor Terminus and the Azumi ninja clan, Shianndrea trains with the legendary Toshigawa clan to embrace the mysterious power within her. Shinobi: Ninja Princess is written, illustrated and created by mastermind Martheus Wade. A prequel to Wade’s most famous creation ‘Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa’, Shinobi; Ninja princess explores her formative years as Shianndrea struggles against her destiny .The all ages action/adventure series takes a manga inspired spin on this classic coming of age story and returns to a universe of warring clans and high adventure.
Wade’s approach is accessible to readers who may cross over from that realm but it manages to stay just light enough to attract the casual reader.  Wade, who’s work has been featured in graphic novels like ‘Mail Order Ninja’ and ‘The Bad Girls Club’ for IDW publishing, is joined by his wife and frequent collaborator, Janet Wade (Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, Turra: Gun Angel)  and features a variant cover by Tressina Bowling (Hateink , Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women).

The all-new superhero series sells out immediately, rushed to second print

Kyle Higgins (Batman, Nightwing), Alec Siegel (Captain America, Avengers), and Rod Reis’ (Justice League) all-new ongoing series C.O.W.L. has garnered early praise across the comics community and sold out instantly at the distributor level. In order to meet customer demand, Image Comics is pleased to announce a second printing of the new superhero comic will be available on 6/25.

Set in 1960s Chicago, C.O.W.L. begins the story of a labor union of superheroes who must work together to regain the confidence of the public and ferret out threats inside and outside their offices.

Praise for C.O.W.L.:

"Part crime drama, part Chicago history, part superhero epic, Higgins and company have crafted something truly special with C.O.W.L. A refreshingly original debut with scope, mythology, and terrific characters." —Scott Snyder, Batman, WYTCHES

“Gorgeous stuff. Keep an eye out for this one.” —Kelly Sue DeConnick, Ms. Marvel, PRETTY DEADLY

"Rod Reis is doing an amazing modern riff on Sienkiewicz's painted stuff. Really excited to see where he takes it over the next few issues! —Chris Burnham, Batman Incorporated, OFFICER DOWNE

“A 'why didn't I think of that?' idea… Compelling/fun/sinister. If Clifford Odets wrote Watchmen, this is what you'd get!” —Marc Andreyko, Batwoman

“Mad Men with capes. C.O.W.L. isn’t just a compelling Superhero comic, it’s an authentic American story. Higgins and Siegel offer up engaging, sometimes hardboiled characters that Rod Reis paints with aplomb. Definitely a creative team to watch! " —Brian Buccellato, Detective Comics

“Great period-set superhero noir, with atmospheric Noto/Sienkiewicz hybrid artwork.” —Declan Shalvey, Moon Knight

"Check out COWL #1 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, & Rod Reis. Cool noir take on what happens to a superhero union when there's no more villains. Dug it." —Nick Dragotta, EAST OF WEST

“Really great. And pretty as hell, to boot.” —Bryan Q. Miller, Smallville

“A styling first issue with a ton of brains.” —Joshua Fialkov, The Bunker

“Mad Men with superheroes. Highly recommended.” —Christos Gage, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

“C.O.W.L. bucks the origin fetish of the superhero genre by introducing us to its intriguing cast not at the start of their sagas, but at what might be the end.” --Comics Alliance

“American history gets overhauled in C.O.W.L., a new series about the superhero labor union of 1960s Chicago that’s been described as Mad Men meets Avengers.” --The Hollywood Reporter

“This is no rebooted Justice League or X-Men. The characters deal with strikingly real issues.” --The Chicago Sun Times

“Exploring Chicago’s tumultuous history under the guise of superheroics is a stroke of genius… The book is an easy sell even without the excellent art by Rod Reis… His work is reminiscent of Kent Williams or Phil Noto, and he gives the book a Mad Men-like authenticity. Recommended.” --CBS Man Cave

“This  instantly absorbing book is the type of book you hand to someone that ‘isn’t into comics,’ or ‘doesn’t read super heroes.’ …These three are a team who knows how to bring out the best in each other. And C.O.W.L. is the best and will only get better. This is a perfect series to get into. It has a long life ahead of it.” --Crimespree Magazine

“A genre mash-up and period piece that sounds as fresh and exciting as anything on cable TV, but is also pure comics.” --Den of Geek (US)

C.O.W.L. #1 has completely sold out at the distributor level, but may still be available in comic stores. It is currently available digitally on the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com) and the official Image Comics iOS app, as well as on Comixology on the web (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

The August releases of two bestselling Shadowline series written by Kurtis J. Wiebe, RAT QUEENS #8 and PETER PANZERFAUST #21, will feature covers by each other’s artists. Additionally, a special retailer incentive cover B diptych by Michael Avon Oeming will be available for both books.

RAT QUEENS artist Roc Upchurch will draw Cover A for PETER PANZERFAUST. "Being a Peter Panzerfaust fan, I jumped at the chance to do a Wendy cover,” said Upchurch. “This is, by far, the best incarnation of Wendy Darling to date. I hope I did her justice (though, I probably did not)."

This twenty-first issue begins a new story arc for the series, providing a perfect opportunity for fans of Upchurch’s RAT QUEENS work to try out this series as well. Together at last, Peter, the Darlings, and the remaining Lost Boys embed themselves in the dangerous heart of Paris. With the Hook hot on their heels, it is only a matter of time before they are discovered. But as ever, Peter is not without a plan!

PETER PANZERFAUST artist Tyler Jenkins will draw cover A for RAT QUEENS. "As far away from anything I get to draw on a regular basis and easily the most fun I have had doing almost any cover,” said Jenkins. “These characters seriously Roc(k).”

In this issue the Rat Queens continue their blade-swinging snark in part three of “The Far Reaching Tentacles of N’Rygoth.” And this time, enemies better watch their backs.

PETER PANZERFAUST #21 will be available on 8/13 for $3.50 and can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code JUN140493. Image Updtae; MURDER, LOVE, AND TIME TRAVEL INDISPLACED PERSONS

21/5/2014

An original graphic novel inspired by San Francisco’s eclectic denizens

Picture
From the Eisner-nominated writer Derek McCulloch (STAGGER LEE, Gone to Amerikay) and artist Anthony Peruzzo comes DISPLACED PERSONS, a riveting graphic novel about murder, love, crime, friendship, betrayal, and just the slightest bit of time travel.

San Francisco, the twentieth century: In 1939, a private detective searches for a missing heiress. In 1969, twin brothers approach a drug heist from opposite sides of the law. And in 1999, a woman slowly comes to realize the terrible danger she faces in her own home.

McCulloch was inspired to write DISPLACED PERSONS because of a love of puzzle stories, detective stories, time travel stories, and a fascination with how history imprints itself on the smaller story of a family's history.

“It's like reading rings in a tree...you can see the growth of the tree, ring by ring, and the distance between the rings tells you when the droughts hit, or the long winters, or the hurricanes,” explained McCulloch.

“You can look at a family tree the same way, and when you see that someone was born, say, in Poland in 1920, and their child was born in Baltimore in 1947, there's a story between those two rings. Displaced Persons takes those rings, and takes all the different kinds of stories I love, and mixes them up and twists them into a shape you won't really understand until the last page. It's a book I hope people will read twice...I guarantee you'll see things the second time you didn't know were there the first time."

DISPLACED PERSONS is richly illustrated by Peruzzo, depicting three different times in San Francisco’s varied history. The graphic novel will be in comic book stores on August 6 and bookstores on August 19.

Supernatural thriller graphic novel by Joshua Luna from Image in June

Picture
In WHISPERS, a chilling graphic novel by Joshua Luna (ULTRA, GIRLS, THE SWORD) due out in June, Sam is a young man struggling with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder when he suddenly gains the ability to leave his body in “ghost” form and travel, free from his body, unseen.

As he travels, Sam finds he can manipulate people, nudging them to perform acts, as well as hear their thoughts. Unable to control this power, Sam’s actions lead to uncontrollable consequences, and soon he finds himself witnessing horrific acts. Can he right what has gone wrong in his life? Or will he lose himself in a shadow world of demonic forces?

“We are so accustomed to the filter that exists between a person's true thoughts and feelings and what they actually express out loud that we often don't know what it's like to get the raw truth,”  said Luna, who both wrote and drew WHISPERS. “But what if someone could override that filter? What if someone could peek into your mind and know your deepest fears and desires and use that knowledge to influence or even manipulate you? Whispers is about the headspace that we all try to protect from the outside world and how the awareness of its vulnerability can lead to empowerment or destruction."

WHISPERS is an intense supernatural thriller, sure to captivate fans of television shows like the BBC’s and Syfy’s Being Human and dark fiction like Joe Hart’s The Waiting. It will be in comic book stores on June 11 and in bookstores on June 24.

Latest Straczynski superhero title from Image Comics takes on corporatization

Picture
Praise for PROTECTORS, INC.:

“...a prime showcase of exemplary collaboration in creating not only a fascinating world but a resonant social satire.”
- Meagan Damore, Comic Book Resources

“If you are looking for a change of pace from the primary hero fare and want something a little different, yet with some elements that you like, then Protectors, Inc. is right up your alley. If you don’t like superhero stories and prefer more hard hitting drama, thenProtectors, Inc.  also meets that need. Finally, if you just want a good and entertaining story with superb writing and art, we’ll Protectors, Inc. meets that too. It’s a comic that will not disappoint in any areas.”
- James Anders II, Comic Bastards
In PROTECTORS, INC., a new Image Comics title from J. Michael Straczynski and Gordon Purcell, superheroes have been privatized and corporatized. With no supervillains to occupy their time, super-powered people ply their time as spokespersons and franchise their images for profit — with a cut going to their employer, Protectors, Inc., which has a corner on the superhero market in Chicago. They lead charmed lives until one of them is found murdered and the trail for the killer leads back to the Protectors.

In June, this mystery will unfold in PROTECTORS, INC. VOLUME 1 by J. Michael Straczynski (TEN GRAND, SIDEKICK) and Gordon Purcell (Star Trek), a graphic novel collecting the first half of the latest Joe’s Comics series published by Image.

At the heart of the mystery is the origin of the Protectors’ powers. Endowed with super-human abilities during World War II, they are nevertheless ignorant of the source of their power.

“That there have never been any bad guys with powers seems to indicate that whatever entered the world that day during WW2 is being very selective in terms of who gets those abilities,” Straczynski explained in an interview at Newsarama. “The question, of course, is...is that true, or is it simply a cover for something else? Is there a conspiracy at the center of Protectors Inc. that has been there almost from day one? If so, they've been able to cover it up pretty well, and might be able to do so indefinitely...unless something goes terribly wrong.”

Standing in the way of Detective John Riley’s investigation of the murder is the very company the Protectors thought existed to safeguard their interests: Protectors, Inc. Detective Riley will have to delve deep and keep out of the crosshairs of one of the most powerful corporations in the country to discover the truth.

PROTECTORS, INC. VOLUME 1 merges the hope and exuberance of Golden Age superhero comics with the darker explorations of the genre in books like Watchmen. It will be in comic book stores on June 4 and bookstores on June 17 and is available for pre-order now.

An intricate and groundbreaking crime story on a level Brubaker and Phillips have never tackled before, THE FADE OUT weaves a tangled web through the underbelly of a 1948 Hollywood... A noir film stuck in endless reshoots. A writer plagued with nightmares from the war and a dangerous secret. An up-and-coming starlet's suspicious death. And a maniacal studio mogul and his security chief who will do anything to keep the cameras rolling before the Post-War boom days come crashing down. THE FADE OUT is the most ambitious series yet from the award-winning Noir Masters.

Early praise for THE FADE OUT:
"Brubaker and Phillips's books have always been about eight years ahead of their time." —Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, Y the Last Man)

"Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are the gold standard of the crime graphic novel." —Warren Ellis (Planetary, Transmetropolitan, Gun Machine, Fell)

"Brubaker & Phillips continue to make sweet music together, broadcast to you in the form of the best comics around." —Robert Kirkman (THE WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE)

"How can you resist the Lennon and McCartney of Feel-Bad Comics Noir heading out west for the flickering horrors of Hollywoodland? THE FADE OUT feels like the book Ed and Sean were born to make." —Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, CASANOVA,Hawkeye)

"Ed and Sean are that rare longterm collaboration that never become complacent, each project is a new revelation, the love visibly increased, the enthusiasm for the craft only growing over time. You don't have to consider the purchase, you make it on instinct at this point." —Rick Remender (BLACK SCIENCE, DEADLY CLASS)

"Like Scorsese and De Niro, Brubaker and Phillips are the unmatched masters of a certain kind of storytelling—those fables of doomed and deluded men who are ready to die bloody, defending the tatters of their soiled American dreams. A new title from the sharpshooters behind Criminal and Fatale is reason enough to go on living." —Joe Hill (Locke & Key, Horns, NOS4A2)

"Brubaker and Phillips have achieved the sort of creative consistency that'd justify critics filing their INSTANT CLASSIC reviews before they even read whatever they put out next." —Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, Phonogram, Young Avengers)

"I’ve been reading Ed Brubaker comics since the first appearance of Ed Brubaker comics and every single time he announces a new title I mutter to myself: 'ugh! I wish I would’ve thought of that!'" —Brian Michael Bendis (POWERS, Alias, Ultimate Spider-Man)

"I'm a pretty easy mark for any Brubaker-Philips creation, but the ambition behind this one has me spinning with anticipation. Couldn't be more excited." —Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, MANHATTAN PROJECTS, Avengers)

“Two of the best in the business, no contest.” —Kelly Sue DeConnick
“I never know what to say in these things” —Kelly Sue DeConnick
“Seriously, just buy the [expletive deleted] book. I promise you’ll like it. Unless you’re [expletive deleted].” —Kelly Sue DeConnick
“I don’t think we’re supposed to say [expletive deleted] anymore.” —Kelly Sue DeConnick
“Forget I said that." —Kelly Sue DeConnick (PRETTY DEADLY, Captain Marvel)

From writers Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman (Alphas, X-Men Origins: Nightcrawler, The Authority, The Highwaymen), rising-star artist Afua Richardson, and Top Cow’s Minotaur Press comes GENIUS. A harrowing, action-packed tale of a city that declares war on a brilliant young woman pushed to the edge. Complete in five parts, every issue of GENIUS will ship weekly in August.

What if the greatest military mind of our generation was born to a people who are already supremely conditioned to wage war, who know nothing but violence since birth, and must continually adapt to new predators in order to survive? What if the second coming of Alexander the Great, of Genghis Khan, of Napoleon, of Patton...what if it was a teenaged girl from South Central, L.A. named Destiny? And what if she decides to secede three blocks of the ‘hood from the Union? Who is going to take it back from her and her army of gangbangers? Who CAN?

"We're thrilled to be part of Image's roster of the new and different,” said Bernardin. “This story—about an urban revolutionary's war on systemic injustice—is one Adam and I have been wanting to tell for a very long time."

All five issues of GENIUS will be available weekly, throughout August. GENIUS #1 arrives in stores on 8/6 for $3.99. It is available to pre-order with Diamond Code JUN140478. Issue #2 will be available on 8/13 with Diamond Code JUN140479, #3 will be available on 8/20 with Diamond Code JUN140480, #4 will be available  on 8/27 with Diamond Code JUN140481, and #5 will be available on 8/27 with Diamond Code JUN140482.
