VERTIGO TO RELEASE NEIL GAIMAN’S ‘THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE DELUXE EDITION’ AND ‘FREE COUNTRY: A TALE OF THE CHILDREN’S CRUSADE’ THIS FALL

25/3/2015

Comments

Fans of Neil Gaiman have much to rejoice about this Fall as the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author will release two spectacular collections in time for the holidays.
Picture
THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE DELUXE EDITION hardcover by Neil Gaiman and artistic luminary J.H. Williams III makes its debut this November. The collection will be comprised of the six previously released issues (look for issues #5 and #6 later this year), which tell the story of Dream before the events of THE SANDMAN, including the spectacular gatefold featured in the first issue. In addition, there will be extra exclusive material including pages from the Special Editions, script pages, among others.

In this book, which TIME MAGAZINE calls “as weird and magic and dreamy as ever,” Gaiman expands upon the story that changed the landscape of modern comics 25 years ago. THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE  features cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King’s siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny as well as the first appearance of Dream's parents.

THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE DELUXE EDITION hardcover features a cover by JH Williams III and will be available November 11, in comic stores, November 17, 2015 everywhere books are sold. No Sandman collection will be complete without THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE DELUXE EDITION hardcover.

Also available in September is FREE COUNTRY: A TALE OF THE CHILDREN’S CRUSADE. This marks the first time THE CHILDREN’S CRUSADE issues #1 & #2, written by Neil Gaiman, Alisa Kwitney and Jamie Delano, will be collected since their initial release in 1997. The two-issue miniseries follows the Dead Boy Detectives who are on the case when several children go missing in a small English town. A series of strange and unexpected twists take them to Free Country, a place that dates back a millennia, where children never grow old and are free from the abuse and tyranny of adults. But Free Country is failing, and what it needs is the strength of five innately powerful children – including the young sorcerer Timothy Hunter – to restore their uncanny world to what it once was. In addition to the original stories, the collection will include a new chapter completing this compelling tale of ancient history, stolen dreams and lost children, in the way Gaiman originally envisioned. The new chapter will be written by Toby Litt (DEAD BOY DETECTIVES) and drawn by Peter Gross (THE BOOKS OF MAGIC).
"A long time ago, I wrote the first part of a story, and waited to find out how it middled, then worked with Jamie Delano and Alisa Kwitney on the end. For years people have asked how and when they could read all the story of the Children’s Crusade,” stated writer Neil Gaiman. “I’m glad to say that it’s now been retooled and refinished, and is something both old and new — a forgotten jewel and a new delight."

FREE COUNTRY: A TALE OF THE CHILDREN’S CRUSADE is a 200-page hardcover book arriving on September 23 in comic stores, September 29 everywhere books are sold and will include 64 pages of new material. Available for $24.99, the collection will also feature an introduction by Gaiman, and exquisite new cover art by Mark Buckingham (DEAD BOY DETECTIVES).

VERTIGO TO RELEASE ANTHONY BOURDAIN’S ‘GET JIRO: BLOOD AND SUSHI’

24/3/2015

Comments

“From the crazy awesome mind of Anthony Bourdain…It’s fantastic! This is such a good read.  It’s really funny, it’s really cool.”
– JIMMY FALLON/LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON on GET JIRO!

“Anthony Bourdain is known for his distinctive personality and witty writing.…The graphic novel is fun for food lovers and common diners alike.”

– THE DAILY MEAL on GET JIRO!

“‘Get Jiro!’” unfolds in a dystopian version of Los Angeles where today’s (mostly) polite and academic discussions about food have evolved into grisly gastronomic feuds.… In some ways, “Get Jiro!” represents a coming-full-circle thing for Mr. Bourdain.”
– THE NEW YORK TIMES on GET JIRO!
Picture
Today, Vertigo, the innovative, boundary-pushing imprint of DC Entertainment, announced it will release a prequel to 2012’s GET JIRO! from renowned chef and  New York Times bestselling author Anthony Bourdain (Kitchen Confidential, Medium Raw) along with co-writer Joel Rose (La Pacifica, Kill Kill Faster Faster), interior artist Alé Garza, and cover artist Dave Johnson. Reminiscent of a Yakuza action movie, the original graphic novel GET JIRO: BLOOD AND SUSHI is set in Tokyo and tells the story of how Jiro's two worlds collided as he worked for his father's mob, yet pursued his love of cooking at night to become a chef.

"Where did my ultra-violent sushi chef hero from the previous book come from? What if you were brought up in a family where murder is acceptable practice and making the best sushi on the planet is a shameful secret?” Writer Anthony Bourdain stated, “I wanted to take the story back to its beginnings--in Japan (albeit a slightly-in-the-future, dystopic Japan), and indulge my own enthusiasms for both the place and the many classic genre films that have been made there.  This is fun for me."

“Tony and I wanted to revisit Jiro and go back to his origins," explained co-writer Joel Rose. "We took as our inspiration classic yakuza movies, Ichi the Killer, Battle Without Honor or Humanity, and a slew more. We were also looking for an artist with the chops to do the manga we saw as the book's style, and thus, Alé Garza. We are thrilled to be back and can’t wait for fans to pick up the book.”
"When I was approached to work on the Get Jiro! prequel I was giddy with excitement! The idea of getting to create something with Anthony Bourdain was just so overwhelming,” said artist Alé Garza. “I also knew that I'd have to push myself harder creatively. GET JIRO: BLOOD AND SUSHI, has been just that, a creative push forward for myself as an artist. I'm doing my best to create an emotionally compelling world that fits suit with the previously released book. It's really unlike any thing I've ever taken on."

GET JIRO: BLOOD AND SUSHI will hit shelves and be available for digital download on October 20, 2015. The original graphic novel will be 160 pages and available for $22.99.

DC Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment announce QUARANTINE ZONE by Daniel H. Wilson

24/3/2015

Today, DC Entertainment and Alloy Entertainment are thrilled to announce a new and exciting original graphic novel. Written by none other than Daniel H. Wilson, current EARTH 2: WORLD'S END show runner and the writer of this June's EARTH 2: SOCIETY as well as the New York Times bestselling novel Robopocolypse and its sequel Robogenesis, among others.

What if humanity discovered the root of all evil? And what if it was a virus? Must it be contained?

Welcome to the QUARANTINE ZONE. Set in the future, those infected with the virus have been forcibly imprisoned in the Quarantine Zone (whether they choose to do good or evil). These prisoners are watched over by the special forces unit known as Quarantine Zone Enforcement. While the rest of the world is sterile and crime-free, they live full of the fear of new outbreaks. But what happens if someone with the virus goes undetected in the outside world?

Drawn by Fernando Pasarin, QUARANTINE ZONE ($22.99 / 160p / on sale in comic stores January 6 and everywhere books are sold January 12, 2016) is an action packed scifi story that raises questions about free will and the nature of good and evil.

Issues #1 and #2 slated for second printings

Picture
“Postal is a book that took me by surprise and really wowed me. The writing is incredibly interesting and well done. The art and colors are very fitting for the book and make it much more enjoyable. This is a book that needs to be read by anyone who likes good stories!”
--All-Comic
The new Top Cow/Image Comics crime thriller POSTAL by Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK) and Bryan Hill (Broken Trinity: Pandora’s Box) and Top Cow’s Talent Hunt winning artist Isaac Goodhart is flying off shelves. Issues #1 and #2 are being rushed to second printings to keep up with demand for the hot new series.

The townsfolk of Eden, Wyoming wake up to the first official murder the town has seen in 25 years. Their reaction to this isn’t normal, and there’s a reason for that. Eden operates as a haven for fugitive criminals who remain here while new identities, often including facial reconstruction, are created for them. There is zero tolerance for any illegal activity that might draw attention to the town and an “official murder” is the last thing they want. A single, tight-knit family runs Eden with the youngest oddball son Mark Shiffron overseeing the postal branch, the only means of shipping in to or out of the city. THE FBI has repeatedly been foiled trying to insert an undercover here; they see Mark as the weak link to exploit. This murder gives them a new opportunity.
POSTAL #1 and #2 remain available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

POSTAL #1, 2nd printing (Diamond Code FEB158258), arrives in stores on April 15.

POSTAL #2, 2nd printing (Diamond Code FEB158259) will arrive in stores on April 15.

POSTAL #3 (Diamond Code FEB150623) will arrive in stores on April 22.

Introducing FRESH ROMANCE, a monthly digital romance comic magazine from Janelle Asselin, comic book editor & critic

23/3/2015

Comments

”Romance is coming,” promises FRESH ROMANCE, a new digitial romance comic magazine from Janelle Asselin, Senior Editor of ComicsAlliance.com and former DC Comics editor. If funded through the now-live Kickstarter campaign, Asselin’s new imprint Rosy Press will debut FRESH ROMANCE in May 2015. The first issue of the monthly anthology features sundry stories ranging from a clandestine, queer high school love affair to an impeccably researched and illustrated Regency-era romance. In addition to three forward-looking romances, each issue of FRESH ROMANCE delivers a relationship advice column by a quartet of divorced writers, behind-the-scenes art coverage, and a fashion report.

“Rosy Press specializes in publishing romantic fiction and nonfiction aimed at attracting a diverse readership,” says Asselin. FRESH ROMANCE forges a new future for romance comics with modern characters, stories and a wide array of genres. FRESH ROMANCE’s inaugural stories include:

  • A twist on the iconic high school love story by Kate Leth (KATE OR DIE), Arielle Jovellanos (FIVE), and colorist Amanda Scurti, in which a queer couple keep their relationship under wraps by pretending to compete for the same, equally secretive guy.

  • A Regency-era romance by Sarah Vaughn (ALEX + ADA) and Sarah Winifred Searle (SMUT PEDDLER) about a couple headed to the altar despite a mutual lack of enthusiasm for their marriage. (Spoiler: period costumes and culture are consummately researched.)

  • An otherworldly tale by novelist Sarah Kuh, who has a three-book prose book deal with DAW Books and who is penning her first comic with Sally Jane Thompson (RED JACK) and colorist Savanna Ganucheau, in which a cynical, supernatural barista is trapped in this world… until she helps enough lonely souls find love.

  • The first cover from Kevin Wada, a former fashion illustrator, who uses his hallmark watercolors to depict Leth and Jovellanos’ high school heroines.

Rewards available exclusively through the FRESH ROMANCE Kickstarter campaign support three-month, six-month, and ongoing subscriptions, including the opportunity to be drawn into a story, an original comic to propose marriage to your loved one, and one-of-a-kind prints and commissions, including: Five commissions by Chris Burnham (BATMAN, INC. THE UNNAMED); a Gene Ha (TOP 10, 4-Time Eisner Award Winner) sketch commission; a Dustin Nguyen-drawn original page from the Stephanie Brown BATGIRL series; a commission of Harley Quinn by DC and Marvel artist Carmen Carnero; and an original page from the Stephanie Brown BATGIRL series drawn by Pere Perez.

“With our digital platform, FRESH ROMANCE can reach a diverse set of readers,” said Asselin. “FRESH ROMANCE is the comics answer to the popular modern romance novel, and we can digitally deliver it to anyone, anywhere, anytime.” FRESH ROMANCE content will be available in a variety of digital formats: via ComiXology or as a PDF, CBR, or ePub file, and will always be DRM-free. Unlike their real-world counterparts, FRESH ROMANCE stories never end – they will later be published as ebook collections.

“Thanks to our ongoing anthology format, the kinds of stories we feature will be constantly evolving,” said Asselin, who recently appeared in the documentary SHE MAKES COMICS. “The magazine will be R-rated, so while not all of the individual chapters or stories will be racy, there will be some adult content. These aren't your mom's romance comics. Our goal is to bring avid comics readers and those new to comics together to enjoy the romance genre.
