Bestselling Eisner-nominated writer Phil Hester (Green Arrow, The Coffin) joins Eisner Award-winning artist John McCrea (Hitman, The Boys) for MYTHIC, an all-new supernatural series about an unlikely crew charged with maintaining (and covering up) the network of magic that keeps the world at status quo. The series launches from Image Comics on May 6.

In MYTHIC #1, “science” is a lie told to the masses. In truth, the fibers of what keeps the world in existence are comprised of magic. And an unlikely team—Apache shaman Waterson, Greek immortal Cassandra, and cell phone salesman Nate Jayadarma—is charged with keeping all the world’s magic in check—as well as a secret—from humanity. But what happens when those supernatural gears that keep the world turning come to a grinding halt?

“Always a real pleasure to be working with Phil Hester and with Mythic he's provided some big, exciting themes for me to sink my teeth into,” said McCrea. “We've assembled a crack team of international comic operatives to insure that this is top drawer comic experience!”

Hester added: "I think John is a singular talent and has a tremendous gift for pathos, comedy and horror, so MYTHIC has been tuned to fit all those abilities. I can't think of another book quite like it on the stands, but if you enjoy Kirby-style action and high concepts combined with creepy horror and irreverent humor, you found your comic book."

MYTHIC #1 hits stores on May 6. Cover A can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code MAR150473. Cover B can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code MAR150474.

Introducing the RIGHT HAND OF DOOM beer inspired by Mike Mignola’s bestselling HELLBOY graphic novels

17/2/2015

Comments

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of Mike Mignola's legendary Hellboy character, Dark Horse Comics and Rogue Ales have collaborated to create the RIGHT HAND OF DOOM, a limited edition beer that will be available online beginning February 22, 2015 at www.rogue.com.

“When Dark Horse Comics published the first Hellboy story 21 years ago, I never thought there’d be a Hellboy beer,” said Mignola. “But I really can’t imagine a better time for Rogue to introduce the Right Hand of Doom beer. If Hellboy was real I guess he’d finally be able to buy me a beer.”

“Hellboy has appeared in graphic novels and comic books, prose novels, two animated features, two live action films, toy lines and all manner of merchandise,,” said Mike Richardson, President of Dark Horse. “Rogue Ales approached us with the idea of creating a heavy-handed, supernatural red ale and we loved the idea of two independent, Portland based companies coming together to create something new that would be both fun for fans and worthy of the Mike Mignola’s creative legacy.”

“This beer is dedicated to the B.P.R.D,” said Brett Joyce, President of Rogue Ales. “RIGHT HAND OF DOOM is brewed with all the same passion and intensity that Mike Mignola and Dark Horse have brought to Hellboy for the past 21 years.”

The RIGHT HAND OF DOOM label features a Hellboy drawing by Mignola. The beer will be available for the first time publicly at an event at Things From Another World Comics store in Portland on Friday, February 20 at a signing with Mignola and fellow comic book superstars Matt Kindt (MIND MGMT), Eric Powell (THE GOON) and Brian Wood (REBELS). The event begins at 4 PM, with Mignola’s signing scheduled for 6 PM. The beer will be available nationally via http://buy.rogue.com/Rogue-Hellboy-Right-Hand-of-Doom-Red-Ale; pre-orders are now available.

Gateway to welcome classic SF & Fantasy authors from Orbit, Hodder & Stoughton and Headline

Picture
Gateway is an eBook publisher of classic SF and Fantasy.  It is part catalogue site, highlighting and promoting the thousands of eBooks; part gateway to online retailers from whom these eBooks can be bought; part social network for readers who wish to discuss and recommend authors.

Gateway's parent company, the Orion Publishing Group is owned by the Hachette UK Group, which also owns Little, Brown, Hodder & Stoughton and Headline publishers, among others. Little, Brown is home to one of the UK's major SFF imprints, Orbit, who publish such genre heavyweights as Iain M. Banks, Terry Brooks, David Gemmell, Robert Jordan and Elizabeth Moon. Hodder & Stoughton and Headline are also home to some hugely respected writers of the fantastic, such as Jean M. Auel, Ben Bova and Jack McDevitt, and share Robert A. Heinlein, and Harry Turtledove with Gateway.

In Gateway’s on-going efforts to make the website the ultimate source of classic SF and Fantasy, the imprint are delighted to welcome an outstanding selection of authors from Orbit, Hodder & Stoughton and Headline to the site.

Darren Nash, the Publisher of Gateway, said: “As well as adding wonderful new authors to the list, this expansion has also allowed Gateway to fill some major gaps in our existing Gateway authors' oeuvres – most notably, adding 2001: A Space Odyssey to Arthur C. Clarke's offering, The Left Hand of Darkness to Ursula K. Le Guin's and some seminal works to our Robert A. Heinlein listing – including Hugo-winners Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.”

The full list of new authors, whose works are live on the Gateway site from today, includes:

Ben Bova

David Brin

Terry Brooks

Orson Scott Card

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

DARK HORSE TAKES FIVE SPOTS ON THE 2015 YALSA GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS LIST

10/2/2015

Comments

Picture
Last week, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) committee published their much-anticipated 2015 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. Not surprisingly, given the tremendous success of Dark Horse’s 2014 publishing line, the publisher landed five titles on this year’s list, with one making it into the top ten--47 Ronin!

This year’s Dark Horse selections are as follows:

47 Ronin. By Mike Richardson. Illus. by Stan Sakai. $19.99 (978159582954). The Japanese legend of the 47 Ronin and their epic mission to avenge their wronged master.

Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem. By Steve Niles. Illus. by Dave Wachter. $14.99 (9781616553449). A Jewish village brings to life a giant monster to defend themselves against the Nazis.

“The libraries have always been an important market for Dark Horse books, so it is especially gratifying when our titles are selected for YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list,” said Dark Horse’s VP of book trade sales, Michael Martens. “This is a real achievement because we know the selection is based on the merits of the books, as perceived by the committee members who actually read them and feel they will circulate well. Having one in the top ten is the icing on the cake.”

Dark Horse congratulates the editors, writers, and artists who worked on each of the above titles and thanks the Young Adult Library Services Association for recognizing these works.

Road to Jove

9/2/2015

Comments

By Phil Cole
The Road to Jove is a new webcomic from the mind of Aaron Dembski-Bowden (@adembskibowden) and the digital paintbrush of David Sondered (@Colrouphobia).

At only three pages long, it’s as fresh as a web comic can get, yet in these three pages they’ve already managed to grab hold of the quivering mass that is my brain and have me wanting more, MORE DAMMIT. The art is gorgeous, typical of Sondered’s other illustrations (see the blog here: http://studiocolrouphobia.net/). Broad brushstrokes give off a sketchbook vibe but with just the right amount of detail to draw you into the image.

So far we are but a few pages into the prologue so there is but the barest of bare bones of a story on display but with words like Apostate and gods being thrown around, along with the post-apocalyptic hints and pieces and my love of all Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s work over at Black Library, I’m very firmly in the interested camp.

You can find the comic at www.roadtojove.com, which updates every Friday ,and I highly recommend checking it out.

Legendary writer/ artist Mike Mignola and acclaimed novelist Christopher Golden present the rise of a villain for the ages in BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING from Dark Horse Comics

6/2/2015

There is an absolute evil. The Red King lives. On May 6 2015, the legendary creator of HELLBOY, Mike Mignola, and NEW YORK TIMES bestselling novelist Christopher Golden will reunite to present the rise of a new villain: the Red King in BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING, a five part comic book series from Dark Horse Comics with art by award winning children’s book illustrator Peter Bergting, colors by the award winning Dave Stewart and stunning covers by Ben Stenbeck (FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND).

The Red King is legendary. But is he the stuff of myth—or the ultimate adversary of the human race? In this series, Lord Baltimore discovers the truth about an ancient evil that threatens to destroy the world.

"What I love best about BALTIMORE is that I really believe there's nothing else like it in the comics marketplace. It's unique,” said acclaimed co-writer and novelist Christopher Golden. “THE CULT OF THE RED KING is epic horror spanning three continents, with a large cast of characters and a real sense of dread thanks to stunning art by Peter Bergting and the mood set by the colors of Dave Stewart, who is the best colorist in the business, bar none."

The events of BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING take place after the events of the BALTIMORE novel co-written by Mignola and Golden. “I'm really excited about this new direction we're taking with the Baltimore book and Peter Bergting and Dave Stewart continue to really deliver the goods,” said Mignola.

"Baltimore succeeded in his quest for revenge, and now, barely hanging onto his humanity, Baltimore’'s diving into a much bigger mission,” said Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie. “He's not just taking down the most evil people he can find--he's facing off with evil itself.”

Black magic, corrupt religion and absolute evil? Beware the Red King. BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING goes on sale from Dark Horse Comics on May 6 2015. BALTIMORE: OR, THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER AND VAMPIRE will be available for paperback for the first time in July of 2015.
