Sony acquire the Film rights to Lemire and Nguyen's upcoming Descender Series.

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it acquired the feature film rights to Descender, the forthcoming comic book series from New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lemire and New York Times bestselling comic artist Dustin Nguyen. Josh Bratman will produce the film with Lemire and Nguyen attached to executive produce. The first issue of the eagerly awaited series will be published by Image Comics on March 4, 2015.

“It was a competitive situation for Descender, and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” said Lemire and Nguyen. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”

A sprawling, science-fiction space opera full of mystery and adventure, Descender is a rip-roaring, heart-felt cosmic odyssey about a little boy looking for home in a universe that hates and fears him. The incredibly lifelike artificial boy, TIM-21, may hold the secrets deep in his machine DNA to the origin of robots that have decimated entire planets. As a result, he is the most-wanted robot in the universe. Before long the entire galaxy is looking for TIM-21 and his rag-tag group of unlikely companions, as they make their way from one exotic planet to the next with new foes advancing on them at every turn.

Dark Horse is proud to announce that the first issue of Joëlle Jones, Jamie S. Rich, and Laura Allred’s Lady Killer has sold out at the distributor level and will receive a second printing!

Josie Schuller is a picture-perfect homemaker, wife, and mother—but she’s also a ruthless, efficient killer for hire! A brand-new original comedy series that combines the wholesome imagery of early 1960s domestic bliss with a tightening web of murder, paranoia, and cold-blooded survival, Lady Killer has received acclaim from creators and critics alike.

“The best comics feature great talent throwing together the stuff that gets them most excited, like Mike Mignola on Hellboy, or Eric Powell on The Goon, or Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips on The Fade Out,” said Dark Horse’s editor in chief, Scott Allie. “Joëlle’s drawn a lot of other people’s stories, but only she could’ve used midcentury fashion, espionage, and ultraviolence to create such a perfectly modern comic.”

To reflect the absolute killing the issue’s first print run made in the direct market, the second-printing cover will feature a special blood-red color scheme.

Find out why the critics are raving. Order Lady Killer #1 today through your local retailer!
Praise for Lady Killer #1:

“A gorgeous and darkly funny book, well worth buying.”—Gail Simone

“Dark Horse has spared no expense in making this miniseries loaded with talent.”—Comic Book Resources’ Robot 6

“Jones brings a new level of polish to her artwork on this title, using a clean, confident line that gives Lady Killer a slick retro look.”—The A.V. Club

BIRTHRIGHT, VOLUME 1: HOMECOMING by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan (colors by Adriano Lucas)

Picture
In March’s BIRTHRIGHT from Image Comics/Skybound, the Rhodes have lived through every parent’s worst fear — their young son Mikey disappeared one year ago. Now, as their family disintegrates and hope fades, Mikey returns, but nothing could have prepared them for who he is now.

Snatched from his life by beings from another world, Mikey became a hero whose destiny was to save the land of Terrenos. A grown man hardened by battles with dragons, trolls, and evil mages, Mikey is back to save Earth from the same peril that threatened Terrenos in this series by Joshua Williamson (NAILBITER, GHOSTED) and Andrei Bressan that turns fantasy into reality.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Williamson spoke about the emotional core of BIRTHRIGHT. “Can you imagine losing a child? That is the scariest thing in the world to me,” he said. “The Unknown. The life lost. But then it brings the question of, what would you do to get that child back? How far would you go to get the kid back, and to keep the kid….

“As much as this book is about the drama, and fantasy aspects, it's really about family and loss,” he added.

BIRTHRIGHT, VOLUME 1 will be in comic book stores on March 4 and in bookstores on March 17. It is specially priced at $9.99 and available for pre-order now.

The LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE
marks the final chapter to the popular series

Picture
Justin Jordan (SPREAD, LUTHER STRODE) and Tradd Moore (LUTHER STRODE, All New Ghost Rider) reunite for LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE, the final chapter in the popular LUTHER STRODE trilogy, set to launch from Image Comics on April 1.

For five years, Luther Strode and Petra have been on the run. Now the time for running is over, and the Murder Cult is going down. The road to Cain starts here in the double-sized debut of LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE #1.

“This is what we’ve been building to. All those questions? They get answered here,” said Jordan. “This is Luther Strode taken worldwide. We’re going bigger, crazier and bloodier than before, and there’s no guarantees anyone is making it out alive.”

Readers first met Luther Strode in THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE. Just an average nerd, Luther Strode sends away for a bodybuilding course from an old comic book—one that ends up working a lot better than he ever imagined. Though his newfound strength and strange talents make school a lot easier, they've also caused some very, very bad people to take a very, very keen interest in him.

In the follow-up, THE LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE, Luther became more than a nightmare for the evil men in his city... he became a legend. He found himself hunted by a legendary killer and ended up with a measure of redemption and a new mission in life: stop the people that made him what he is.

LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE takes Petra and Luther across the world, from Russia to Hong Kong to some place east of Eden, hunting for the man who started all of this: Cain himself. The story ends here.

The double-sized LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE #1 will land in stores on April 1 and can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code FEB150498.

The FADE OUT is coming to Trade in February

19/1/2015

Comments

Picture
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, the creative team behind some of comics’ best crime noir series like CRIMINAL and FATALE, return with THE FADE OUT. Set in the heart of noir itself, the backlots and bars of Hollywood in 1948, the first volume of the most ambitious series to date from Brubaker and Phillips will be in stores in February.

A starlet is found dead, a film is stuck in endless reshoots, McCarthyism looms over the studios, and a writer is plagued with memories of the war and a terrible secret. It’s the end of the Golden Era in a place where only lies are true. Brubaker writes a taut, tense script, while Phillips’ signature art embodies the era with its heavy shadows, beautiful dames, and brooding men.

Brubaker explains what about post-War Hollywood attracts him in an interview at Complex magazine: “The glitz and glamor, the fact so much of that world was all lies and masks and fake names, and it really feels like post-World War II Hollywood was almost a gold rush,” he said. “So many people rushing to L.A. dreaming of fame and fortune, and willing to do anything to make it happen.”

In 2013, the creative team announced a five-year exclusive deal with Image Comics that gives them carte blanche to produce the projects that they most want to work on. THE FADE OUT is the first title produced under this deal.

THE FADE OUT VOLUME 1 will be in comic book stores on February 25 and in bookstores on March 10. It is available for pre-order now.

Praise for THE FADE OUT:

“Hollywood has never looked so dark, so sinister and so seductive. It’s a story that only a Brubaker/Phillips comic could tell." –Darren Orf, Paste Magazine

“The Fade Out is a beautiful book that offers the most complete characters and the most fascinating concept the pair have created, and the most interesting theme they’ve explored. It may be the strongest debut in their illustrious partnership.” –John Parkin,Comics Alliance

“The Fade Out is simply the best at what it does. It's a clear creative statement that any fans of noir shouldn't miss.” Marykate Jasper, Comic Book Resources

“For noir lovers, history buffs, and mystery enthusiasts, The Fade Out has already set an incredibly high bar for itself, and there’s every indication it will continue to challenge and surpass expectations.” –Matt Dodge, Multiversity Comics

Official release

Forty years ago, Air Force test pilot Duke McQueen saved the universe. Then he came home from a splendorous alien world, married his best girl, settled down, had two sons, and grew old. His stories of his journey across galaxies became the subject of whispered ridicule. But in STARLIGHT, the Image Comics graphic novel by superstar comics writer Mark Millar (JUPITER’S LEGACY, Kick-Ass) and artist Goran Parlov, Duke — alone after his sons leave home and his wife dies — gets a message from space: the Universe needs a hero again.

A sweeping science fiction epic, STARLIGHT features Millar’s most heartfelt storytelling to date, while Parlov depicts with equal skill a dazzling alien planet and and old man’s loneliness with his gorgeous, Moebius-esque art. Duke is returning to Tantalus a legendary hero, but is he still the man he was forty years ago?

“The whole character just seemed to pour out the moment I started writing him,” said Millar of Duke in an interview on Image Comics’ website, “and I found myself really caring about him. His life is like any of our father's or grandfather's, except for this one amazing thing that happened forty years ago, and so as the first issue closes and he gets a chance to go back we're really with him on that journey.”

A must-read for anyone who wants their sci-fi to have a sense of wonder, STARLIGHT will be in comic book stores on February 11 and in bookstores on February 24. It is available for pre-order now. It is currently in development at Fox as a feature film.

It's been another strong year for Marvel headed by some of their big stars bringing in large numbers of readers. Chief among these was Spiderman but more on that in another post.
The fight between DC and Marvel on the unit share seems quite tight but the House of Spidey are still well in the lead on the dollar share point of view. Image are a clear third, with IDW and DarkHorse pushing each other all the way for the fourth spot.
These figures are based on physical sales.
