“THE FAR REACHING TENTACLES OF N’RYGOTH,” Part 1

Picture
When we last were with the Queens they had just saved Palisade from a horde of far from happy Orcs. The awesome foursome then decided to celebrate the victory in the way they know best and that's to throw one hell of a party. Now that the first arc is over and collected in Volume one Sass and Sorcery (which you can read here) its time for the girls to face a new challenge.

Now to embark on the difficult second arc, the downfall of many a creator. This issue begins with the aftermath of the party to end all parties. Hangovers are rife and so is the humour as the girls go about bringing themselves back into the land of the living. Around the breakfast table we get to see the group dynamic that has made this comic top of many readers lists in full flow. Kurtis J. Wiebe likes spending his time giving his characters depth although the transition form one scene to another can feel a little disorientating. Still the girls are back on the horse with a few tasks being asked of them.

In the background is Sawyer his on/off relationship with Hannah gives us more than a few chuckles but it's when he is doing his job that the intrigue starts to flow in this issue. At the moment I am enjoying the relationship between Hannah and Sawyer I just hope it does not become Ross and Rachelesque.

There are a few more bumps in the road as the story progresses but the ending is perhaps the strongest of the series so far. Roc Upchurch does a great job in depicting the world of the Rat Queens but the very last panel in the issue is a nut grabber. It allows Upchurch to flex his artistic muscles and if this is a sign of where things are I'm totally onboard.

The real twist of the issue lies firmly in the lap of Dee, I will not spoil except to say a blast from the ......

The second season/arc can be a difficult thing for any creator to land. From this beginning the creation team look like they know where they are going and better still have the support cast to make the Rat Queens become a established property.

Issue Rating 4/5
