Rat Queens #2 releases on the 23/10/13 you can read our review of the first issue here.
Sometimes the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy and this is how we left the Queens at the end of the last issue. Although an Assassin was sent to ambush them he was taken out by a Troll and now we get to see the foursome in full on attack mode. The opening theme is defiantly this as we get to see some wonderful art from Upchurch. The fluidity of the action panels are top draw and the star of many of these is Betty. The Hippy Halfling is certainly no pacifist, her mix of brutality and comedy at this point are making her the star of the troupe.

My previous concerns on how Wiebe would balance the characters seem to be unfounded. With the in your face expose of Betty we are getting more subtle character traits from the other girls. From Dee’s regular hints at her lack of faith to Hannah’s face off with another Elf, each plot line is revealing more and I can see us not getting the full picture till we are very deep into the series. This is a great move as we do need exposition to be dumped on us in the first issue or two, a common trait in many stories. If you are creating a series then you can use the full run to give us back-story or even just leave it to the reader’s imagination.

With the slow character development we are left with a space to fill within the story and this is being taken up with a conspiracy that is seemingly aimed at the removal of the Rat Queens, along with the other mercenary bands they associate with. With a few twists and turns this story is looking like it has some legs. With the world that is being created I can see this series running for a long time as the Queens will be able to go on many a questing adventure in the years to come.

Issue Rating 4/5
