Random Chat; Why I think K'nex bringing the Titanfall Titans into the physical world is a great move for the gaming franchise.

The trouble for new IP's is creating a strong enough player base to keep their product moving. As it stands Titanfall is already a little hamstrung as it is a Microsoft exclusive and this limits the market that will get actual hands on with the game.

Enter trans media by linking with a toy creator like K'nex the folks at Respawn have started tapping into their future market. For a single game to become a franchise you need to engage these future clients as they will be the new players for the next instalment. If they already know the name then the likelihood of them opting for your franchise is raised significantly and that is half the battle already won. The rest is of course up to the game to hang on to the new entrants.

Of course from what I have seen these are great toys in their own right and at the very least we should be getting some great new additions to the K'nex world.

London Gets Its First Glimpse of Titanfall™ Licensed Building Toys by K’NEX®

I had a little hands on time with a prototype of the Titanfall toys and they look like they will be a great addition to the game. If you think getting hold of the early Titan models included in the Collectors edition of the game will run at nearly £300 this nifty model will give hours more pleasure* at a more affordable price.
One of the most highly anticipated video games of 2014, Titanfall™, is set to be transformed from onscreen play into the world of building sets with new licensed building toys by K’NEX. The new range will launch in the UK in autumn 2014, but visitors to the London Toy Fair gained an advanced sneak peek of the collection.
The K’NEX® Titanfall™ Building Sets come as a result of an agreement between Respawn Entertainment, creator of the game which is set to release on March 11, 2014, and K’NEX. The relationship combines the award-winning K’NEX® building system with the Titanfall World, bringing it from the digital screen to the construction aisle for the first time. With over 80 prestigious gaming awards earned before the game’s launch, Titanfall™ is full of exciting, explosive and thrilling action, and appeals to gamers of all ages. Titanfall™ will be available on Xbox 360®, Xbox One®, and PC.
Paul Fogarty, Managing Director of K’NEX UK comments:
“We’re delighted that the Titanfall™ Building Sets will be joining our collection, and that we are able to reveal a glimpse of them here at the London Toy Fair. The game pre-launch buzz is already generating a huge following and fans of all ages will be able to build the Titanfall Frontier in their own homes.
“As always our strong licensed portfolio continues to combine the open-ended creativity of K’NEX® with the characters that children love,” says Fogarty.
Sets in the collection by K’NEX will include popular characters such as Pilots, multiple Titans, Spectres and other key themes from the video game. Designed for builders ages 8+, the building sets will bring the fun of the game to life, and expand its appeal through a rewarding, age- appropriate K’NEX building experience.

Random Chat; Why The Toy Fair helped me to remember why I love Gaming and Comic related Toys.

22/1/2014

Today was a real treat for me as I got to spend my day looking around The Toy Fair at London's Olympia. My mission for the day was to investigate the relationship between our covered mediums (Video Games and Comics) and the Toy world at large.
I will be rounding everything up over the next few days (and months thanks to NDA's) from the fair itself but to start I thought a brief overview of why I think this relationship is so vital to all the mediums concerned.
Picture
To start with I have to blame George Lucas for costing my parents an absolute fortune. After watching Return of the Jedi (not everyone's favourite Star Wars but I loved it). I badgered my poor Mum and Dad to start buying me action figures. I think my first was Wicket Wystri Warwick complete with Orange hood and a spear. My collection grew from there to obscene proportions until finally my Mum gave my entire collection away (one of the darkest days of my life). However coming through this emotional turmoil relatively unscathed has given me an opportunity to look at why the physical manifestation of a visual product can instil so much desire and want from children of all ages. What I mean by the wordy statement above is the key to why I love this trans media world we live,
...the physical manifestation of a visual product..
When you read a comic, play a game or watch a movie you see a character in front of you but you are unable to touch them. Gaming does allow you to interact but that tactile feedback is still missing. Enter toys, mostly in the form of action figures. Being able to pick up and battle my Ewoks against the Imperial Army gave me hours of fun. This is as true today as it has always been. Gaming  I think is an essential parts of a child's development it teaches you skills that other mediums can not. Toys can be just as powerful in their own way as they can teach kids everything to imaginative play to basic care of their possessions.

As I wandered the aisles of Olympia I was reminded of all this. The thrill of transforming Optimus Prime for the first time while trying to recreate the transforming sound effect (give it a try now it will put a smile on your face), the wonder of Lego as it grew from random bricks all the way up to Technics and of course the sheer volume of Star Wars toys available to buy. Toys give us the chance to own small pieces of the franchises we love and should be embraced by kids along with their Sackboy and Mario related gaming experiences. Likewise for adults the ability to pick up a toy and play has a certain nostalgia that can not be beaten.

The mixed medium relationship seems to be growing from strength to strength on today's evidence and that means it will be a future filled with happy kids of all ages and this makes me smile like a Chesire Cat.

    What this is

The random chat is changing a little to be just as the title says. This is going to function as my place to chat about things that can come from anywhere, from TV to films to Sport to gaming. Most things are up for discussion even though I will avoid the key no no's like Religion, Politics and Macro Economics (Micro economics of the gaming/comics world though is still fair game) and of course the biggie whether the Spice Girls were the greatest musical group of all time or not. I hope to bring a taste of something different in these posts and please feel free to comment where you see fit.
