PNY Outdoor Charger

The more smart devices become the more power they require and unfortunately, most batteries fail to keep up with the consumption demands placed upon them. This can lead to headaches thankfully though we have external chargers in shapes and forms these days to help with our high demand and make outings a little more comfortable for the tech-obsessed among us.
With this is mind PNY has launched their Outdoor Charger to help fill a bit of a market gap that fits in perfectly with the Summer. The Outdoor Charger as the name states is built for life outside of the home and workplace (although it works perfectly well here as well), this is mostly thanks to its rubbery shell that can seemingly take on all comers and believe me so far it has not disappointed. I have simulated a few drops from belt height on various surfaces and so far all has gone swimmingly. Far from a true test this already shows a distinct advantage from my other chargers as I know dropping them on a frozen floor in a chiller would lead to a crack in the case at the very least. I will be putting the charger through its paces in regards to its durability in the coming months and will report back all my findings in due course but so far so good.

The reason for the belt height experiments is due to the included carabiner (shown above) which fits nicely on to the outer shell of the charger. It is orientated on the same axis as the charging ports allowing for quick access when on your belt. These are safely covered by a rubber topper that acts as a dust cover as well as a Splash proof layer. This rather simple addition gives you a spot of extra confidence when out and about that your charger will remain safe. However, the protection is characterised as splash proof so care around water is still advised. I have ridden to work with the charger on my belt and it has kept hanging there throughout my journey. It does tend to flop quite a bit and that could become annoying on longer journeys but my half hour ride has so far shown to be acceptable. One word of caution this is not the lightest charger (mostly due to the rubber cover) so use with overly loose shorts/trousers could prove to be awkward.

The addition of a torch is a great touch, it's nice and bright and is activated by holding the on/off button for three seconds. The fact it's easy to activated adds to the overall usability of the charger without adding too much to the size of the product. One minor annoyance is the lack of a click or compartment to carry one or both of the supplied charging leads. It's a small gripe but one that I wish would be added to truly round off the charger.

Of course, the main reason we have portable chargers is to keep our devices running and here the PNY Outdoor Charger shows its power under the hood. After a full charge, I was able to charge my Phone a Samsung Galaxy S8 twice as well as keep the phone running on Pokemon Go with the battery level increasing over time. This is no small feat as Pokemon Go is one of the hungriest apps out there. The charger comes with juice when purchased so you can use it right out of the gate if you wish but it is not at the full charge which you can see by looking at the indicator lights placed above the on/off button.

Overall I'm very happy with the PNY Outdoor Charger it's robust and feels like a sturdy product. If you like more rigorous activities and want to keep your phone or Gopro charged then this feels like an ideally suited charger. We will report back at later date on our ongoing use of the device but for now, I'm happy to recommend it wholeheartedly.
