PNY Expand Bike mount
By Paul Fiander
Cycling is one of the best ways to commute and have fun while you're doing it in my opinion. I'm not a runner and dislike public transport so my bike is an essential part of my working life. with this, in mind, I was excited to take a look at the PNY Expand Bike mount but also a little trepidatious as my bike is my pride and joy.
Off the bat, the mount itself is easy to assemble as it comes in two parts which snap together with no fuss and from there it feels sturdy at the join while maintaining a large degree of rotation. This allows you to change the orientation of your phone from landscape (great for navigation apps) to portrait (really handy for using your phone as a recording device while riding among other things).
I'm going to look at the mounts two sections in order to better describe the experience of using it. The first of the two parts is the clamp this is solidly built with a screw that allows for easy removal when needed but most of all the feel is secure when applied to your handlebars. The best part is the padding added to the clamp which protects the bars from scratching helping to keep your bike in tip-top condition. After rides both on and off-road, the clamp has not failed and more encouraging is it has not slipped its position at all giving me the confidence to ride without fear of losing my phone.
The second part is the phone mount itself. this is able to accommodate both of my phones a Samsung S8 and a Motorola X Force with a rubber cover. The advertised limit of dimensions are 5,5” and the cased X Force was a little tricky to attach as it was on the limit . However, both phones fit snugly between the side clamps (the S8 was a lot easier to fix in place) and the four corner rubber bungees. This is my one area of concern as to how long the bungees will reatin their tensile strength but once they are covering the corners I have not noticed any slipping. The screen is easily visible even when riding at speed showing the support given to the phone again giving me confidence the clamp will not fail.
I'm very impressed with this mount it protects both my phone and my bike and I'm not sure what else I could ask for to enhance my riding experience. If like me you enjoy your bike and phone and want to make the most of navigation/exercise apps then this is an easy recommendation to give.
