Velocity 2X Release Date Announced.

5/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Brighton based developer FuturLab, the team behind the award winning Velocity and Velocity Ultra have announced a release date for the sequel, Velocity 2X.

Returning to the seat of the Quarp Jet, a space fighter capable of teleporting, players can expect to blast their way through hundreds of enemies at break neck speeds, fighting against the clock as well as the evil alien Zetachron.

In addition to the normal gameplay styles, Futurlab have also added some new flavour to the game, with boss battles against large enemy ships and side-scrolling platform elements. Shown in their recent trailer, the player is seen to battling a boss structure before teleporting inside of it. Inside, the player is then able to run through the halls of the damaged ship, blasting and destroying as she goes. My main issue with Velocity Ultra stemmed from the lack of gameplay changes in the later part of the game and both of these additions should add depth to the Velocity series.

Velocity 2X will be available on the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita from the 2nd of September in North America and from the 3rd in the United Kingdom.

You can read some of my impressions of Velocity Ultra here

The Swapper is out today on PlayStation 3, 4 and Vita & here's the trailer to prove it along with Matt's review.

PlayStation Vita Exclusive “Metrico” Gives Us A Gameplay Trailer & Release Date.

16/7/2014

Picture
Netherlands based developer, Digital Dreams, today released the very first gameplay footage for their PlayStation Vita exclusive action game Metrico. Metrico is set in a world filled with infographics and challenges the player through levels filled with bar charts, line diagrams and pie charts, each of which directly react to the player’s movements, actions and input. For example, one bar diagram might grow with each step a player takes to the left, while another might decline with every jump. Players must explore Metrico and carefully analyze every move to see how they affect the world, and what will help them advance. This game mechanic, called “Input Morphing” forces players to think about actions that they normally don’t consider in a video game. Metrico is a combination of exploration, skill, experimentation, but above all: thinking outside of the box.
Metrico will be available on PlayStation Network the 5th of August in the US and the 6th of August in Europe, exclusively for the PlayStation Vita. Dutch synthesizer composer “Palmbomen” will be featured for Metrico’s music soundtrack and sound effects.

The new gameplay trailer, including the most gameplay you’ve probably ever seen in one video, can be seen below

The Swapper jumps to Playstation

30/4/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Almost a year since it’s release on PC, Facepalm Games’ critical success, “The Swapper”, will be released on Playstation with help from London’s Curve Studios. I also had the chance to interview developer Olli Harjola which you can read here

Returning to the lonely space puzzler, players will be able to use Playstation’s Cross-buy system to download The Swapper on their Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and the Playstation Vita. As well as transferring between platforms, save games will also share between the systems and allows players to continue their journey through the desolate space station from anywhere.
Picture
From the opening sequence The Swapper does it’s best to make sure you know that you are on your own. Landing on the deserted research station, Theseus, on far off planet Chori V, players are given control of a lone space traveller who quickly discovers a device that clones the user. The clones that you create move in time with the original character and it’s not long before you discover that you can “swap” between clones. The puzzles throughout the game revolve around the ability to replicate and jump between replications, resulting in some of the smartest platforming puzzles I’ve ever played.
Puzzle games usually walk a fine line between boringly easy or frustratingly hard. The Swapper never falls into either category and manages to stay smart. Instead of overly complex and frustratingly hard solutions the game asks the player to think about your surroundings and use the tools given to you. In the whole time I played the game I have never felt cheated by complex or obscure puzzles, or felt that the game was holding my hand. It’s the perfect puzzle game, and it’s coming to Playstation.
Picture
I visited Curve Studios to check out the Playstation version of The Swapper. Walking into the dark office lined with couches, empty beer bottles sitting on the coffee table, the first thing I saw was The Swapper on the TV screen in front of me. I’ve played the game on my MacBook Air, which is admittedly the wrong platform to experience the game, but I’ve managed through on a trackpad and thought the game looked great. Then I saw it on Playstation 4. I could instantly see the difference in quality, with the colours bright and accurate, and the higher level of detail revealing Facepalm’s elaborate and beautiful design.
After seeing both the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita version of the game first hand, Curve Studios should be proud of what they have achieved. Both titles looked amazing with only minor differences between them. Playing it on the Vita I found that the only part that felt off was the slow targeting and slowdown effect during a “swap”. Fearing the worst, I pressed start and found that the speeds could be adjusted through the games settings. But both of the changes made sense when you leave the world of keyboard and mouse, and were well implemented on the Dualshock 4 and Vita’s button layout.
Picture
With the game already seeing success on PC, Mac and Linux, joining the growing library on the highest selling next generation console is an awesome opportunity for Facepalm, Curve and Playstation players who are aching for more titles on the Playstation 4 store.

The Swapper will be available on Playstation 4, Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita from the 25th of June.

@curvestudios 2014 line up; Hands on Impressions - MouseCraft by @CrunchingKoalas

30/4/2014

Last night Curve Digital held a little event to showcase three of their upcoming titles. Matt and I both managed to get some hands on time with each of the games. Of the three games which are The Swapper. Titan Attacks and Mousecraft, my favourite by far was the last on the list Mousecraft. We will be bringing you impressions of the other titles but here I will concentrate on a game that's "Development is going grate!"
Picture
Okay to get things rolling why Mousecraft?
I am a puzzle fan I may not be the best at them but I love the challenge of trying to outsmart a level. This comes from my early gaming history with the monster that was Lemmings. Mousecraft as the developer mentioned was part of the inspiration for this title so immediately I was intrigued. However instead of copy and pasting the team at Crunching Koalas have put their own stamp on their title.
First off are the actual mice although they are autonomous rodents but they are capable of tricks like jumping single blocks this pretty simple mechanic gives the puzzles an extra dimension The real star of the game though is the way the puzzles are solved, instead of controlling the mice you actually alter the level in order to get your mice to the cheese (the end point). The trailer below gives you some idea of the gameplay although it is rather sped up from the actual way you will play.
I played the game mostly on the Vita and found it to be the best way to play the touch-screen integration worked really well and the game felt perfect for the handheld. Of course with most titles that Curve have a hand in the game will be Cross buy on the Playstation platforms.
Overall this is looking like a great addition to the Curve line up and we will hopefully be bringing you more news and a review in due course.

Titan Invasion Lands on PlayStation 3 / 4 / Vita This Summer

19/2/2014

Picture
Curve Digital has announced the third title in a month of announcements: Titan Invasion.  The game is being offered for one price as a cross-buy title on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

The Titan Invasion collection will include two action titles from UK developer, Puppygames: ‘Titan Attacks!’ and ‘Revenge of the Titans’.

Titan Attacks! is an arcade action title inspired by games like Space Invaders and Galaga, but with many modern features including a full ship upgrade system, online leaderboards and stylish, neo-retro visuals. Revenge of the Titans keeps the frantic action and the distinctive visual style, but expands the game into a unique mash-up of Real Time Strategy and Tower Defence including over 25 different types of buildings and a deep upgrade system as players progress for 50 challenging levels.

Titan Invasion will be available on all PlayStation consoles this summer. Curve Digital has also announced puzzle-platform MouseCraft and Stealth Inc: Ultimate Edition this month, with one more announcement to go.

Latest Screenshots from Volume - Even More Shiny

17/2/2014

Good old Mike Bithell has cleansed our palates by releasing some more screenshots of stealth puzzler, Volume, in a week dominated by Titanfall news. As you can see from the pictures, the level design is now beginning to look more shiny and next-gen as he prepares the assets for a PS4 release. Textures are smoother, perspective blur is more noticeable and bloom and hologram-fuz is in much more evidence. Lighting and shading is dominated by more realistic effects, and coupled with the level editing system, it looks like it is shaping up to be a unique and interesting game on the PS4. We wait with bated breath...

This Valentines Day show that special someone you really care & buy them...The Lego Movie Game

14/2/2014

When it comes to building relationships what better than Lego? It can easily be crafted in to whatever you desire, changed at will and most of all repaired when broken.
If real love was as good as versatile as Lego then we would all live in a happier world.

Anyway enough with the mushy stuff. Our odd head shaped head friends are back and this time they are bringing a Movie. The simultaneous release of The Lego Movie and its game is a great move by Warner Brothers and if the past is anything to go by this game will be a top hit along with the film.
Below are some pictures along with a full release.

The Vita is set to go Mousey in May with the help of @curvestudios

12/2/2014

Curve's second announcement of their four week mega month was teased quite a bit on Twitter today. Tweeters had the chance to win the curve bundle if they could correctly guess the title that would be announced. This may have seemed like a very difficult task but their were more than a few clues most namely that the game was already in Steam Early Access. So now we know (& knowing is half the battle) that Mousecraft will be hitting the Vita in May.
Below is the full release and we hope to bring you more details as the release date gets ever closer.
Picture
Independent game publisher Curve Digital has today announced that puzzle-platform game MouseCraft will be coming to Vita in May, with a PlayStation 4 version planned for the summer. The PlayStation versions will be developed by London developer Curve Studios.

The game, created by Polish developer Crunching Koalas, sees players aiding mice in their relentless quest for cheese by stacking and manipulating to world’s most famous puzzle pieces; Tetrominos to create safe paths and defeat enemies.  MouseCraft combines the mechanics from classic puzzle games with a story mode, vibrant and original characters and a fully-featured level editor.

The Vita version of MouseCraft also marks the first time Curve Digital will release a Vita version of a popular indie title on the same day as the PC launch. Curve Digital Managing Director, Jason Perkins said: “MouseCraft takes some of the most recognisable elements from popular puzzle titles and uses them in really unique and interesting ways. It’s a charming game and one that’s very much suited to the controls and portability of the Vita.”

Tom Tomaszewski, the co-founder of Crunching Koalas said: “We are super excited that we will be joining the Sony family. Each of us here at Crunching Koalas owns at least one PlayStation console. Bringing MouseCraft to the platform that defined our video gaming experience over the past 20 years, is kind of a dream come true. We are also especially proud that we will be working with Curve Digital - their commitment to the project and the quality of games that they’ve brought to Sony consoles last year, proves that PlayStation versions of MouseCraft are in good hands. ”

The PC version of MouseCraft is available as an Early Access title to buy now throughSteam, Humble Store and developer’s website.

Velocity 2x Alpha footage packs an awfully big bang for your buck.

7/2/2014

The team at Futurlab have had a tough week. The release of a new title in Surge Deluxe (you can read Paul's review here) is tough but today they have started showing Alpha footage of their new title Velocity 2x. Not only this they also did a PlayStation Blog takeover which we will link to below. My advice to them is take a break and put your feet up once this game is finished until then keep working.

Lego; The Hobbit, Trailer

The Lego franchise is one of the best in modern gaming. Their high production values mixed with humour for both young and old make them a stand out set of gaming experiences.

The latest addition to the family will be the Hobbit although we all knew it was coming either from previous news or the fact the Lord of the Rings game was a huge success. It is still good to see that the developers have taken the time to sculpt a wonderful approximation of Middle Earth and its plethora of characters.

Look out for more news as the game gets closer but for now just sit back and enjoy.

We have had three notable releases over the last few weeks, Telltale Game's The Wolf Among Us, Quantic Dream's Beyond; 2 Souls and Zen Studios Star Wars Pinball. We also welcomed a new writer to the site Dorian who opens up the reviews with a review of Beyond 2 Souls;

The vision of Quantic Dreams is quite a thing to behold. They try to create games in a unique style that can leave some flat and other drooling.
To see if their latest effort could hold its own take a trip to our review.

The Wolf Among Us

In terms of narrative The Walking Dead pushed Telltale up with the best developers in the world.
However the Walking Dead has left a burning question can the developer continue to produce experiences that can rival the best of was their adaptation of Robert Kirkman's world a fluke.
Now we have the chance to find out as they take on another comic tale this time drawing from Fables by Bill Wilingham in The Wolf Among Us.

This is a very early view and we will be creating individual reviews for all of the Zen Pinball tables over the coming weeks and beyond. However today the Balance of the Force pack dropped and I have spent some time on each table.
Just for transparency all the scores are form my first full game on the table and I played on the Vita (My platform of choice for Pinball) with the view 4 option selected.
