Time to whip out your wallets, Saints Row IV 'Enter the Dominatrix DLC released tomorrow

22/10/2013

Picture
The new DLC from Volition is out tomorrow. Originally destined as DLC for Saints Row III, but with such a compelling central idea that Volition turned it into a fully fledged game, 'Enter the Dominatrix' is finally here to play as extra content for Saints Row IV.

With boundless self-referential humour squashed into a couple of hours of content, expect to get more of the same batshit-crazy fun you have already seen in the main game. This is not just a skin pack, or extra weapon download package (although there are some new fun weapons and outfits to be had as you play), but actually extra story content which adds to the main game without ruining any of the existing canon. You can actually play even before finishing the main story, however you do have to reach a certain level to be able to access the missions and side quests.

The story presents you with the Saints being interviewed by a reporter on their spaceship about the DLC pack. That's right, in the usual smash down of the fourth wall, the Saints discuss the history of the famous DLC-that-became-a-game in the actual DLC itself, with each character commenting on their roles within. The missions are presented as flashbacks, which you play through with tongue-in-cheek comments from all the crew narrated over your gameplay.

Picture
The missions are a pure joy, as ever, with the emphasis being placed on unadulterated fun, rather than challenging gameplay. There is plenty of fan service being pushed out too, with many references to geek-genre entertainment, although, as the name suggests, the Wachowski bros do get hit with the parody paddle on plenty of occasions. One particular protagonist, in sunglasses and long leather jacket, features, making complaints about the editing process of the game which left out many of his favourite lines. This is much like the minor character from the original Matrix movies who appeared with a more important role in the disappointing game tie-in.

There are plenty more gaming-related jokes too.  At the beginning your character pointedly ignores a request to go through the laborious tutorial process as, quite rightly, the player should know all this by now (much like the beginning of Blood Dragon). There are some pretty funny scathing comments from the Saints about having to do the usual fetch quests and escort missions, and pixelated fast forwarding of some of Kenzie's tech related exposition, with a loud, "BORING!" from the president. The final level reaches new heights of (self-confessed) craziness and the primitive cut scene footage is another homage to the cutting room floor style of the DLC. The scene with The Saints travelling out of Paul's head made me laugh out loud.

If you are feeling jaded after putting many hours into GTAV, Enter the Dominatrix is a very welcome tonic; it certainly put a smile on my face. It is no coincidence that Volition are releasing this DLC now, their timing is pretty good. It certainly made me want to jump back into Steelport for a bit of gimp bashing, so to speak. If you've played the main game already, or are still missing wielding your big purple dildo bat, I can throughly recommend downloading this. You might be cautious about spending £5.99 for two hours play, but this gets you a package (ahem) of high density fun and genuinely good humour. Whip-crackingly good.

20/10/2013

We have had three notable releases over the last few weeks, Telltale Game's The Wolf Among Us, Quantic Dream's Beyond; 2 Souls and Zen Studios Star Wars Pinball. We also welcomed a new writer to the site Dorian who opens up the reviews with a review of Beyond 2 Souls;

Picture
The vision of Quantic Dreams is quite a thing to behold. They try to create games in a unique style that can leave some flat and other drooling.
To see if their latest effort could hold its own take a trip to our review.

The Wolf Among Us

Picture
In terms of narrative The Walking Dead pushed Telltale up with the best developers in the world.
However the Walking Dead has left a burning question can the developer continue to produce experiences that can rival the best of was their adaptation of Robert Kirkman's world a fluke.
Now we have the chance to find out as they take on another comic tale this time drawing from Fables by Bill Wilingham in The Wolf Among Us.

Early Impression; STAR WARS® PINBALL: BALANCE OF THE FORCE

Picture
This is a very early view and we will be creating individual reviews for all of the Zen Pinball tables over the coming weeks and beyond. However today the Balance of the Force pack dropped and I have spent some time on each table.
Just for transparency all the scores are form my first full game on the table and I played on the Vita (My platform of choice for Pinball) with the view 4 option selected.

Fashion Beast

Just a little quote that I hope will get you to take a look at the Fashion Beast review but most of all to think about purchasing one of Alan Moore's best. (sorry for the spoiler)
Fashion beast is just that a total beast of a story it will ravage your ideas and leave you frightened sitting up a tree if you’re not careful.

BC Weekly Update 08/09/13

8/9/2013

The big site news of the week is the addition of IDW publishing to the list of our comic book partners but we will have more on this in a later post. So now on with the highlights.

Killzone Mercenary; Early Impressions

Picture
FPS titles are the mainstay of many a gamer, from Halo to Call of Duty to Battlefield the list of possible ways to shoot someone in the face is pretty varied. Up till now the Vita has been lacking in this key area but will the release of Killzone Mercenary offer Vita users a FPS to be proud of or another mediocre offering.

The Star Wars takeover.

To celebrate the release of The Star Wars comic. The site had a takeover this week below are two of the highlights that help to highlight one of the most amazing franchises in entertainment.

The Star Wars #1; Review of the first part of the authorized adaptation of George Lucas’s rough-draft screenplay

Jon had a chance to relive his childhood this week by experiencing Star Wars again. The difference this time is that the story is relatively new.
The comic is based on George Lucas's Rough draft and according to Jon it's.....No spoilers you will have to read the review to find out more.

Star Wars; Purge, why it's the Vader story fans deserve.

The prequels made Darth Vader into a whiny muppet (My own opinion and not necessarily representative of everyone on the site-Paul).
Thankfully the Purge is here to the right the wrongs of young Anakin Skywalker and make Vader into a Badass once more.

The Star Wars #1; Review of the first part of the authorized adaptation of George Lucas’s rough-draft screenplay

4/9/2013

Picture
George Lucas's first treatment for Star Wars now been given a visual presence in the form of a Graphic novel. The authorized series is published by Dark Horse and the first issue is releasing today releasing today (04/09/13).

We had our very own Star Wars enthusiast Jon take a look and tell us if this is a story that will make the masses "cry out as one" in agony or ecstasy

As such we are looking for some testers and hope that you (yes you reading this) will be up for the task.

You can find the Forum by clicking on the Logo to the left or the Forum label at the top of the page.

We hope to see lots of you on the forum in the coming weeks and months.

Gone Home reviewed in a Jon sort of Way

Picture
Jon spent some time playing Gone Home and then went about describing his experience. Its not a true review but instead a look into;
Gone Home; proof that games can still be intelligent, moving experiences.

DMC; Devil May Cry, The Chronicles of Vergil

Picture
A prologue to Capcom's 2013 hit game DMC.

The focus of the comic is Vergil and Kat two of the main characters NPC's in the game.

The comic is a fast entertaining read and hopefully the review is not a bad read either.

Madcatz & Tritton ready to ship the Kunai for PC and MAC

The new Headset skew was announced at E3 2013 and it is now ready to ship. Bringing the unique styling we associate with Tritton (see attached picture).
Darren Richardson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mad Catz Interactive, Inc. stated,
“Our TRITTON Kunai range proved popular at E3 thanks to its clean aesthetics and impressive audio.  We are confident that passionate PC and Mac gamers will appreciate the performance and value synonymous with the brand.”
The Tritton Kunai are a firm favourite of our resident Battlefielder and Community Manager AK and you can read his article on how to maximize the use of these headsets here.

Early Impressions; Bioshock Infinite; Clash in the Clouds

1/8/2013

Picture
Like Booker utilsing a Sky Line attack, the first DLC for Bioshock Infinite came from out of the blue this week, but is it worth the Money? We will be bringing a full review soon but for now these are my early impressions.

Firstly this DLC is all combat based. There is no story to speak of, we will have to wait for Burial at sea for some more narrative. Instead we get 4 maps complete with 60 challenges (waves) to complete. These have an escalating level of difficulty and are bolstered by Blue Ribbon variants. These are tasks like complete all kills with the shotgun only for example. Although not revolutionary they add a great deal in terms of replay value.

The aim of the game is to obviously survive and take down your enemies and thankfully the sensible UI has remained from the game. There are of course some enemies who will rush, but snipers hide and try to pick you off making the gameplay feel more realistic.
If you enjoyed the combat from the main game then this will be right up your street. We have the same vigors and weapons from the main game, which are still just as much fun. Although trying to get grips with the mechanics did cost me a few lives.

Although not what I expected from the DLC when I purchased the Season Pass, so far its been fun to go back to Columbia and get back into the DeWitt POV. Look out for a full review coming soon and if you want to read a review for the full game click the link or Picture below.

Review; Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge Vita

8/6/2013

Picture
Sidhe created a fusion of two of my favourite things (me as in Paul) Rugby and Gaming.
However can the conversion of the 2011 title from home console to the Vita create a fluid masterpiece, or will it be destined to be the top rugby title on the go by default?

For some the Vita is a flop but for most of those who own the powerful games machine its an amazing blend of technology and games.
In this article we look at the directions the Vita may be heading in and also where we hope it will soon be. Hopefully E3 will tell us more but for now have a read and feel free to comment.

Early Impressions; Grid 2 Launch day

31/5/2013

Picture
The latest Racer from Codemasters' varied stable, hit the streets quite literally this morning. Through the wonder of pre-orders and the PSN we have been able to complete a fair chunk of the game and are so far suitably impressed.
We will be bringing a full review later in the week but if you like your racing Arcadey then this will be right up your street.
With 5 levels of difficulty, this game will have a broad appeal, coupled with damage that can be cosmetic or structural; every driver can find a comfort zone to race.
The starting cars are limited and these will grow as you race, but as you do not have free choice in events, the limited garage is suitable.
The narrative going on in the career is basic and fits the game's arcade feel.
We will be posting a full review soon but until then check out the attached video for some high-octane thrills.
