Breaking: Lizard Squad contacted American Airlines over bomb hoax on SOE Presidents flight.

24/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
A little under two hours ago the hacking group Lizard Squad, who have taken credit for the DDoS attacks on the Playstation Network, have contacted American Airlines over a possible bomb on the President of Sony Online Entertainment’s flight.

Through their Twitter account, Lizard Squad direct tweeted to @AmericanAir and tagged John Smedley, current SOE President. In the tweet they mention the flight number Smedley was travelling on and reported that there may be “explosives on-board”.
Picture
As with all bomb threats, it appears that the airline has taken serious steps, with Smedley tweeting that his flight has been redirected and grounded.

From cyber crime to real life, national security threats; Lizard Squad are kicking a pretty big hornets nest.

Sony’s Playstation Network goes offline. Hackers taking responsibility.

24/8/2014

by Matt Taylor
If you can’t logon to Sony’s Playstation Network today, you may not be the only one, with multiple server’s apparently on the receiving end of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack) attack.
Picture
The attacks started earlier today, by a group of hackers going by the name of Lizard Squad. Since the attacks multiplayer gaming and access to the Playstation Store has been affected.

The group have kept everyone updated with updates from their Twitter feed, which fifteen minutes (at the time of writing this) ago wrote “THE FEDS ARE HERE SHIT”. If Federal Agents are involved, it may be a short time before service is resumed.
Picture
Sony are not immune to cyber attacks, with the company landing in hot water in 2011 after their security was breached and the details of 77 million accounts were stolen. At the time this was one of the largest cyber security breaches history.

The Swapper is out today on PlayStation 3, 4 and Vita & here's the trailer to prove it along with Matt's review.

The Swapper jumps to Playstation

30/4/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Almost a year since it’s release on PC, Facepalm Games’ critical success, “The Swapper”, will be released on Playstation with help from London’s Curve Studios. I also had the chance to interview developer Olli Harjola which you can read here

Returning to the lonely space puzzler, players will be able to use Playstation’s Cross-buy system to download The Swapper on their Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and the Playstation Vita. As well as transferring between platforms, save games will also share between the systems and allows players to continue their journey through the desolate space station from anywhere.
Picture
From the opening sequence The Swapper does it’s best to make sure you know that you are on your own. Landing on the deserted research station, Theseus, on far off planet Chori V, players are given control of a lone space traveller who quickly discovers a device that clones the user. The clones that you create move in time with the original character and it’s not long before you discover that you can “swap” between clones. The puzzles throughout the game revolve around the ability to replicate and jump between replications, resulting in some of the smartest platforming puzzles I’ve ever played.
Puzzle games usually walk a fine line between boringly easy or frustratingly hard. The Swapper never falls into either category and manages to stay smart. Instead of overly complex and frustratingly hard solutions the game asks the player to think about your surroundings and use the tools given to you. In the whole time I played the game I have never felt cheated by complex or obscure puzzles, or felt that the game was holding my hand. It’s the perfect puzzle game, and it’s coming to Playstation.
Picture
I visited Curve Studios to check out the Playstation version of The Swapper. Walking into the dark office lined with couches, empty beer bottles sitting on the coffee table, the first thing I saw was The Swapper on the TV screen in front of me. I’ve played the game on my MacBook Air, which is admittedly the wrong platform to experience the game, but I’ve managed through on a trackpad and thought the game looked great. Then I saw it on Playstation 4. I could instantly see the difference in quality, with the colours bright and accurate, and the higher level of detail revealing Facepalm’s elaborate and beautiful design.
After seeing both the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita version of the game first hand, Curve Studios should be proud of what they have achieved. Both titles looked amazing with only minor differences between them. Playing it on the Vita I found that the only part that felt off was the slow targeting and slowdown effect during a “swap”. Fearing the worst, I pressed start and found that the speeds could be adjusted through the games settings. But both of the changes made sense when you leave the world of keyboard and mouse, and were well implemented on the Dualshock 4 and Vita’s button layout.
Picture
With the game already seeing success on PC, Mac and Linux, joining the growing library on the highest selling next generation console is an awesome opportunity for Facepalm, Curve and Playstation players who are aching for more titles on the Playstation 4 store.

The Swapper will be available on Playstation 4, Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita from the 25th of June.

@curvestudios 2014 line up; Hands on Impressions - MouseCraft by @CrunchingKoalas

30/4/2014

Last night Curve Digital held a little event to showcase three of their upcoming titles. Matt and I both managed to get some hands on time with each of the games. Of the three games which are The Swapper. Titan Attacks and Mousecraft, my favourite by far was the last on the list Mousecraft. We will be bringing you impressions of the other titles but here I will concentrate on a game that's "Development is going grate!"
Picture
Okay to get things rolling why Mousecraft?
I am a puzzle fan I may not be the best at them but I love the challenge of trying to outsmart a level. This comes from my early gaming history with the monster that was Lemmings. Mousecraft as the developer mentioned was part of the inspiration for this title so immediately I was intrigued. However instead of copy and pasting the team at Crunching Koalas have put their own stamp on their title.
First off are the actual mice although they are autonomous rodents but they are capable of tricks like jumping single blocks this pretty simple mechanic gives the puzzles an extra dimension The real star of the game though is the way the puzzles are solved, instead of controlling the mice you actually alter the level in order to get your mice to the cheese (the end point). The trailer below gives you some idea of the gameplay although it is rather sped up from the actual way you will play.
I played the game mostly on the Vita and found it to be the best way to play the touch-screen integration worked really well and the game felt perfect for the handheld. Of course with most titles that Curve have a hand in the game will be Cross buy on the Playstation platforms.
Overall this is looking like a great addition to the Curve line up and we will hopefully be bringing you more news and a review in due course.

Playstation 3 swan song The Last of Us coming to Playstation 4

9/4/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Screen grab from Twitter
After months of speculation and rumour, Sony have let slip that they plan on re-releasing The Last of Us for the Playstation 4. On a preorder banner spotted on the US Sony Entertainment Network site, The Last of Us: Remastered was shown to be priced at $59.99. The banner also displayed the Day 1 Digital stamp which would normally point to a retail version of the title also being available, with the pricing being inline with full cost retail titles in the US. No date was shown on the marketing material.

Originally released on June 2013 for the Playstation 3, Naughty Dog’s action-adventure survival horror title is considered the last great Playstation title to be released on the previous generation console. The game enjoyed critical and financial success and has since sold over 6 million units since release, with the game going on to win over 200 awards.

Those looking to play though the post apocalyptic masterpiece for the first time, or like myself, want to go back for seconds, now we have our chance.

Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut takes flight and goes mecha on next-gen consoles in March

20/2/2014

By Steph Dumont
Picture
Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut is coming to Playstation 4 and Xbox One next month.

Originally released on PC platforms last year, the space combat game puts players into a transformable mecha starfighter and allows you to engage in some serious space combat featuring dozens of intersteller units. The Director's Cut boasts updated graphics, a restructured campaign, previously-released DLC and extra ships to pilot.

Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut will be released digitally via the Playstation Network and Xbox Live and is looking to be priced at £14.99 with a PC release for the Director's Cut coming later.

I don't know about you but I haven't engaged in any space combat of this kind since Dark Star One and Project Sylpheed on the Xbox 360 which really didn't do much to sway me back to this genre. With No Man's Sky and Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut in the pipeline, can space combat be making a big comeback on consoles perhaps? I hope so.

Check out the trailer below. Those visuals and that soundtrack! Much wow. You have my complete attention.

War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment hosting first ever global e-sport event.

18/2/2014

Picture
Gaijin Entertainment, the developer of the free-to-play PC and Playstation 4 title War Thunder, have announced the first global e-sport event, Gladiators.WT 4x4.

In an effort to boost the popularity of e-sports, the Russian developer invited the War Thunder community to compete in the world wide event, which will feature over 300 teams from over 30 countries around the world.
“The Gladiators.WT 4x4 iteration marks the first time that fans can watch the tournament live, making it a true e-sport experience. We’re looking forward to seeing which squad will be crowned a War Thunder champion.”

Kirill Yudintsev - Gailjin Entertainment’s creative director.
The Gladiators.WT 4x4 will see teams of four man squads fight for a number of prizes, with first place netting all four team members a MSI GE60 gaming laptop. Other prizes include a GeForce GTX 780 graphics card, iPad Mini’s and in-game goodies.

The structure for Gladiators.WT 4x4 is made up of three rounds, with all four team members simultaneously duking it out in first round in 1v1 duels, the second round pairing the pilots into 2v2 fights, and the third round seeing both teams facing off in a 4x4. Gaijin Entertainment will broadcast the tournament through the WarThunder forums and through the official international steam at http://www.twitch.tv/metagamingtv.

The tournament will be running everyday until the final at the end of March.

E-sports have yet to make it into the mainstream conscience, but it’s great to see the developer support a tournament where the main goal is to expand the audience and help promote e-sports. I’ve been to e-sport tournaments, but they always seemed like fringe events. Games like Valve’s DOTA 2 have done well to build a community from online tournaments. Gaijin Entertainment look to be aiming for something similar.

Battlefield DLC packages are finally seeing the light of day.

15/2/2014

Matt Looks into thIs weeks DLC news from BF4
DICE have finally announced that they are releasing their second and third DLC packages for PC, Xbox360 and Playstation users.
Picture
Second Assault has been available to Xbox players since the 22nd of November last year, but after a long wait Playstation and PC players are finally seeing the revamped maps from Battlefield 3 come to the latest Battlefield title. This should be available to members of Battlefield’s paid service, Premium, on the 18th of February with the DLC available for separate download in early March.

DICE have received a lot of pressure from the community for holding off on releasing Second Assault for PC and Playstation, with some asking if the wait is due to the problems with the game and the focus the developer has put into updates to attempt to fix issues. After the release of Second Assault on Xbox the game had a lot of work put into it to improve the overall experience after poor post launch stability and multiple gameplay issues.

The third DLC package, Naval Strike, will be available sometime in late March for all platforms. Initially only available to Premium members, the pack will include new weapons, new gadgets and a new multiplayer game mode. The new game mode, which DICE are calling Carrier Assault, is a revamped and modernised (instead of futuristic) Titan mode, a fan favourite from Battlefield 2142.
In this expansion, you’ll experience intense water-based combat as the Chinese armada takes the fight to the sea. You’ll have access to new weapons, gadgets, and amphibious vehicles, and four all-new maps – Lost Island, Nansha Strike, Wave Breaker, and Operation Mortar.                                                                                                                                    Offical Battlefield Blog
Things might not be going according to plan for DICE; after almost three months for the content to go multi-platform, only to get a double up only a month apart.

Putting all this aside, I’m genuinely excited for Titan mode. Attacking objectives to weaken a central target followed by boarding and destroying an enemy aircraft carrier: Battlefield bliss. Lets hope they can pull this off.

More information will be available from DICE as we get closer to the release date for Naval Strike.

The game, created by Polish developer Crunching Koalas, sees players aiding mice in their relentless quest for cheese by stacking and manipulating to world’s most famous puzzle pieces; Tetrominos to create safe paths and defeat enemies.  MouseCraft combines the mechanics from classic puzzle games with a story mode, vibrant and original characters and a fully-featured level editor.

The Vita version of MouseCraft also marks the first time Curve Digital will release a Vita version of a popular indie title on the same day as the PC launch. Curve Digital Managing Director, Jason Perkins said: “MouseCraft takes some of the most recognisable elements from popular puzzle titles and uses them in really unique and interesting ways. It’s a charming game and one that’s very much suited to the controls and portability of the Vita.”

Tom Tomaszewski, the co-founder of Crunching Koalas said: “We are super excited that we will be joining the Sony family. Each of us here at Crunching Koalas owns at least one PlayStation console. Bringing MouseCraft to the platform that defined our video gaming experience over the past 20 years, is kind of a dream come true. We are also especially proud that we will be working with Curve Digital - their commitment to the project and the quality of games that they’ve brought to Sony consoles last year, proves that PlayStation versions of MouseCraft are in good hands. ”

The PC version of MouseCraft is available as an Early Access title to buy now throughSteam, Humble Store and developer’s website.
