Players can now sign-up for all the Closed Beta action
Action Stations! The World of Warships Closed Beta has left port to begin testing today. The times for each region are as follows: Europe 11:00 CET; North America 11:00 PST; Asia 17:00 SGT. Players can sign-up to seize the wheel of many iconic mid-20th century vessels by heading to the official World of Warships website now.

In the Closed Beta, players can test their skills across five original maps and lead the quest of supremacy commanding over 50 U.S. and Japanese warships. In the future, World of Warships will add Japanese aircraft carriers and U.S. battleships to its ever-increasing fleet.

Four classes of warships offer a lot of tactical diversity. Cruisers are nimble vessels; the destroyers’ torpedoes are great for obliterating enemies; battleships are devastating heavy-hitters; aircraft carriers are unmatched in their reconnaissance and sneaky offensives.

Crews (represented by warship commanders) play a key role in gameplay. Levelling up Commanders and gaining points allow players to improve a variety of skills to suit their playstyle. With Modernizations, a ship’s offensive and defensive capabilities can be enhanced.

In Divisions mode, players work together in team of up to three to challenge other opponents. In the future, many battle accomplishments and customization options will be available.

GOG.com's Second wave of Star Wars titles are here. With more coming next week

22/1/2015

By Phil Cole
Picture
So, rather sooner than I expected given the “more in 2015” statement, GOG.com have announced another six titles coming to the digital distribution platform. Some for a re-release and two titles for their digital purchase premiere!

Following on from the releases the other day, we have the brilliant land and space RTS Star Wars: Empire at War – if I remember correctly, it had an awesome rock version of the Imperial March as its menu music. It also, uniquely, brought the fleet based antics of the Star Wars world to a slightly different format, as it was normally found in arcade-style space titles such as Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D which is also available today! What are the chances! I remember playing this classic over and over with my friends back in the day, and chasing those elusive gold medals became an obsession – I’d say a gamepad of some sort is almost a necessity though.
Alongside these two titles comes another game which I have vague memories of – Star Wars: Rebellion. This is a 4x game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate) in which players can control either the Rebellion or the Imperial forces. Many of the films core characters make appearances as players battle for real-time dominance over the other side. Well worth a look if you fancy something a bit different to a traditional RTS game, like Empire at War.

Lapping hot on the heels of these releases, on the 27th of January we see three more titles, all a bit more action based.

Star Wars: Republic Commando, a well-received tactical FPS that allowed you to take command of an elite squad of Clone Troopers each with their own specialty is coming to the service to bring us one of the few great games of the prequel era. Speaking of the prequel era, we also have Star Wars: Starfighter – a sort of successor to the rogue squadron series that mixed things up a bit by locking you into a first person view. Unfortunately part of the fun, for me at least, is seeing these iconic ships duke it out and whilst I love the Rogue Squadron games (and books!) this title rather passed me by – If you really like your arcade style flight games then this could be for you however.

And last but not least is the game that I wished for at the end of the last flurry of games, the one, the only Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2! (or Star Wars Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight depending on how you read the box…). This game was an absolute classic at the time of its release, a tour de force of FPS gaming that allowed us to run around with a lightsaber for, really the first time. Couple that excitement with some great levels, enemies, story – portrayed through the aforementioned live action cut scenes (and some element of choice in the story through whether you go for light or dark side powers!) and it was really was the total package. If you only buy one game out of this bunch then this has to be it IMHO.

Now, that’s not going to be too taxing, even for those of us with relatively modest gaming rigs. Does this mean that Rockstar have cut corners, and PC gamers are going to get a less than mind blowing, crime ridden experience? Well, judging by some of the rather impressive screen shots Rockstar has released, I would certainly say not. I certainly cannot wait to immerse myself in the seedy underbelly of Los Santos. With online play available for up to 30 players, alongside the keenly anticipated Online Heists, perhaps GTA V will finally be the game to release me of my compulsive need to slay orcs. Or a while at least…

And this brings me onto the other piece of news from Rockstar. GTA V’s release date is being pushed back by a rather depressing two months. The new scheduled release is for the 24th of March. Rockstar has cited the need for “a few extra weeks of testing and polish to make it as good as it can be”. This no doubt came as a bit of a blow to many PC gamers, who have already waited much longer than their console counterparts to get their hands on the latest (and arguably greatest) example of car stealing, hooker beating instalment of the Grand Theft Auto series.

So, with this bombshell dropped only a few hours before I sat down to write this, I am still somewhat cheesed off with the news. But as I take a step back, and discuss the matter with some of my gaming friends, I hope I can offer at least something of a balanced view on the matter. The delay of anything you want will annoy even the most well balanced individual. Wheter it’s a PC or a pizza delivery, most of us have come to expect whatever we want on demand. But does this delay mean Rockstar have let their fans down. I would say no.

Look at the bungled AAA releases we have all endured recently. Battlefield 4, Warlords of Draenor and Assassins Creed Unity have all suffered from subpar releases, for a various reasons, leading to nerd rage of epic proportions. I think, on the balance of things, I would much rather wait a little bit longer for a well-tested experience, than spend a not inconsiderable amount of money on something that has been rushed out just to meet a deadline. I have endured this long, a few more months isn’t going to make me want to play this game any less. So, I think, despite my initial disappointment upon hearing this announcement, I have to tip my hat to the chaps at Rockstar. It can’t be easy to make a call like this, even if it does mean a better experience for their fans further down the line. But that’s just what I think. I am sure regular readers will all have their own thoughts on the matter, and I can’t wait to hear what you all have to say.

You will OBEY!

12/1/2015

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Now available as Early Access through the Humble Store, OBEY promises fun and interesting multiplayer gameplay by giving a single player absolute power, as they try to coerce other players to do their bidding.

In OBEY, players are given control of a defenseless little bunny in a world controlled by an indestructable and powerful robot, with the aim of earning more money than any of the other players on the map. Players earn money per second, but anyone lucky enough to control the massive robot will earn ten times the amount of moolah, forcing the other bunnies to try and win back control of the central machine.

The real hook here is the player controlling the omnipotent robot can try to get the other players to do their bidding, increasing the players lead and protecting themselves from being overthrown, with the threat of instant destruction (to the other players) acting as deterrent to insubordination.

New USSR MiG Fighters Take Flight in World of Warplanes

25/10/2014

Flight combat MMO gets new aircraft line, bigger map and revamped warplane roster in Update 1.6
Picture
Wargaming today announced the launch of content update 1.6 for its massively multiplayer aviation combat game World of Warplanes. The update adds a new line of Tier 5 and higher Russian MiG fighters as well as revamps the currently existing plane roster by adding a new multirole class of warplanes for ultimate player freedom and customization.

Known for their breakneck speed and power, the Russian MiG line of jets helped define an entire era of aircraft combat. Starting at Tier 5, the new line of aircraft includes the MiG-3, MiG-9 and the legendary MiG-15bis, one of the world’s first swept wing jet fighters to be ever produced and find success in the skies of battle.

Update 1.6 will also see major changes in the creation of a brand new class of warbird—the multirole fighter. Made specifically for players looking for fighters with a balance between both air and ground combat, the new multirole class will allow them to outfit planes with armaments balanced between high caliber guns and ground destroying bombs and rockets. Previous aircraft in the fighter class, as a result, have now been designated as pure aerial combat dogfighters, which will also benefit from new balance changes for both cannons and machine guns.

Lastly, the El Halluf map will see its boundaries extended, providing a more ample landscape for battle. For more information on World of Warplanes Update 1.6 and to register for a free account, visit:

With a historic feel Ryse was something different in the launch line up of the XboxOne, After some good reviews it seemed to be trying something different and mostly succeeded.

Now this exclusive will be coming to PC giving a wider audience a chance to Battle Roman Style.

Toren coming to PC, Mac and Playstation 4

5/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Toren is a puzzle/adventure game made by Brazilian independent developer Swordtales and will be available on Windows PC, Mac and Playstation 4, through a partnership with publisher Versus Evil.

The game looks incredible, with the developer promising that the story  “takes the audience in a torrent of discoveries about the greatest myth of all, the meaning of life”. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more about Toren in the upcoming months.

The game is one of the first Brazilian video game that is being sponsored by the Brazilian Cultural Incentive Law, which sees Brazilian businesses use what they owe in corporate taxes to sponsor cultural projects within Brazil. Pretty interesting concept and a great way to help the local game industry.

Toren will be available in the early part of 2015.

Bohemia Interactive deploys Arma 3 Bootcamp Update

14/7/2014

Picture
Why this has piqued our interest

Arma can be an unforgiving game when you first start to play. However with this new update it seems Bohemia are trying to break newbies in as gently as  possible.

The chance to learn combat on foot and in vehicles is a big plus for when you do dare venture online. Maybe this update will even make a Arma player out of me.

You can learn more below.
Bohemia Interactive today released Arma 3 Bootcamp – a major new update for Arma 3, which delivers additional single- and multiplayer tutorials, a Virtual Reality training environment, a character- equipment- and weapons-viewer called Virtual Arsenal, refinements to the fatigue and weapon sway game mechanics, plus the anticipated add on integration for Arma 3’s Steam Workshop. The update is further introduced in the new Arma 3 Bootcamp trailer.
SP Bootcamp
The single player 'Bootcamp' mode is the best place to get started with Arma 3.  Introducing the basic principles of infantry combat - actions, navigation, and weapon handling - a short prologue campaign challenges new players to complete real objectives.

MP Bootcamp
Multiplayer Bootcamp is a great way for veteran players to help newbies adapt to Arma 3. Offering a structured set of challenges for both trainees and instructors, MP Bootcamp uses the Zeus framework to give players the tools they need to create a tutorial on-the-fly.

VR Training
VR Training enables you to learn about basic game mechanics within the confines of a virtual world and practice without penalty. A variety of training topics focus upon individual gameplay elements, where players are guided to complete simple objectives with the support of contextual hints and tips.

Virtual Arsenal
Virtual Arsenal is a character, equipment and weapon viewer, which enables you to cycle through and try out in game assets, configure custom settings - such as identity types and insignia - and export load outs to script or used in Arma 3 Zeus scenarios.

In addition to the new content, Bohemia Interactive also took the opportunity to further refine the fatigue and weapon sway mechanics in Arma 3. Weapon Sway and Inertia is intended to simulate the inherent advantages that lighter and more compact firearms possess (particularly in CQB situations) as compared to relatively more cumbersome weapons. For Arma 3, this means that players may turn as quickly as they like, but shouldn't expect their sights to line up dead on target if they are carrying heavier weapons. The improvements to the Fatigue system are related. While players will always be able to run, their rate of movement can now be limited based on the weight of their gear, their state of health, and the management of their stamina.
Last but not least, the Bootcamp Update implements a further integration of the Steam Workshop in Arma 3. Whereas before the Steam Workshop was limited to player-created Arma 3 scenarios, people will now also be able to upload and share add ons, such as custom weapons, vehicles, gear, and much more. Additionally, the first iteration of Arma 3’s dedicated Game Launcher has been published, which functions as a separate executable that enables players to more easily set starting parameters and helps to organize, maintain, and load installed Arma 3 mods.
For more information, please visit http://www.arma3.com and/or follow Arma 3 on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Fresh Off the Successful Global Launch of War Thunder: Ground Forces, Gaijin Entertainment dominates cross platform at E3 2014

27/6/2014

Award-winning developer and publisher Gaijin Entertainment brought major heat to this year’s E3 trade show, accomplishing  many first ever experiences for its smash hit War Thunder, E3 attendees were treated to an unique WWII, MMO gaming experience in all of its destructive glory unlike anything else at the show..
From its humble beginnings through to becoming the largest independent developer in Russia, Gaijin Entertainment had never had a major presence at the world’s most influential video game trade show, until this year. Gaijin Entertainment unveiled several new platforms for War Thunder at E3 including Linux, which means that all future platforms based on this OS will be supported as well.

Whether behind-closed-doors or on the show floor, War Thunder was the only game at E3 to have cross platform play working across five different platforms including PC, Mac OS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and a new unannounced patform, shown only behind closed doors to selected press.

OnLive, the leader in cloud gaming and a trusted partner of Gaijin Entertainment, showcased its amazing subscription based CloudLift service, which allows players to play their PC games on mobile devices using War Thunder. No other game at E3 2014 could say the same thing. In fact, no other game in the world features as many platforms with true cross-play experience.

In addition, no other game at E3, or anywhere else in the entire world can lay claim that they feature more aircraft in a simulation game than War Thunder, which set a Guinness World Record (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/6000/most-planes-in-a-flight-simulation-game) by offering 303 unique aircraft earlier this year. By the time of E3 2014, Gaijin Entertainment actually upped its total from 303 to 345 planes and announced that more will be rolling off the development assembly line in each major update.

We truly believe – and I'm confident our incredible community and the press will back this up – Marvel Heroes 2015 is one of the most improved titles of all time. In one year, the game has expanded at a pace that rivals or exceeds any other iterative release on Earth, be it a sports title, office productivity or next year's car model. You will be hard-pressed to find a developer more demonstrably committed to its game than Gazillion, and we have so much more coming right around the corner."

Since launch, the Marvel Heroes roster has expanded to 34 playable heroes with fan favorites such as Psylocke, Human Torch, Gambit, Loki, Doctor Strange, Nightcrawler and Ghost Rider joining the fight. "The Marvel Universe is constantly growing and Marvel Heroes has grown right along with it," said T.Q. Jefferson, Marvel Entertainment's Vice President of Production, Games. "Marvel Heroes 2015 embodies what fans and players love about our comics and games. It's exciting to see what Marvel Heroes 2015 will do next."

Divinity: Original Sin Moves to June 30 - Chaos Erupts Around the World!

6/6/2014

Picture
Larian Studios has announced that the release date for the upcoming, co-op fantasy RPG, Divinity: Original Sin, has moved back slightly, from June 20 to June 30.

While Divinity: Original Sin has been going through rigorous testing thanks to a huge community playing on Steam Early Access, there are still a few more finishing touches required before launch. The team wants to deliver the best possible game at release, rather than a game they're not 100% happy with, and will use the extra time to add voice-overs for a range of characters, as well as a number of bug fixes to make for a well-polished experience.

Players who have purchased a copy of the game via Steam Early Access will still be able to enjoy it until release, and Larian apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause players who have been patiently waiting for Original Sin's release.
