Toren coming to PC, Mac and Playstation 4

5/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Toren is a puzzle/adventure game made by Brazilian independent developer Swordtales and will be available on Windows PC, Mac and Playstation 4, through a partnership with publisher Versus Evil.

The game looks incredible, with the developer promising that the story  “takes the audience in a torrent of discoveries about the greatest myth of all, the meaning of life”. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more about Toren in the upcoming months.

The game is one of the first Brazilian video game that is being sponsored by the Brazilian Cultural Incentive Law, which sees Brazilian businesses use what they owe in corporate taxes to sponsor cultural projects within Brazil. Pretty interesting concept and a great way to help the local game industry.

Toren will be available in the early part of 2015.

GAMES OF GLORY UNVEILS A PART OF ITS ARSENAL

1/8/2014

Picture
Why this has piqued our interest

The term MOBA used to be a word associated with a hardcore group of players who did not take too well to new players. However with more games coming to the market offering a wide variety of weapons and skills the once ring fenced community seems to be opening up.

Games of Glory is looking like a good prospect to come to the top table in the future but for now it just needs to find its feet along with a strong community.
French / Swedish Indie studio, Lightbulb Crew today unveils more details about the weapons gameplay mechanics available for the Clones in Games of Glory. Each weapon comes with its own specific gameplay and unique capacities that the player will have to combine correctly with the special skills of each Clone.

In the heat of battle, players can change their active weapon at any time in order to adapt their offensive strategy and turn the situation to their advantage. Switch to close combat if the Clone is out of ammunition, send a lethal shot with a sniper rifle after an escaping enemy, mark a player to reveal his location and then strike him with a grenade launcher from safe behind a wall…  These are examples of some of the situations and strategic opportunities that weapon management allows. The combination of the unique skills of a Clone, the weapon he chooses, and the team structure will give the opportunity to players to elaborate new strategies for each game. The controls inspired by Hack’n’Slash, the free aiming so characteristic of Shooters, and the extreme mobility of the Clones bring new skills for players to master.

Through a new video, Lightbulb Crew introduces three of Games of Glory’s weapons. In the end, more than 40 weapons will be available at launch.

·         The Cinetic Dual Barrel 10 (CDB10)
Extremely powerful, to the point of repelling foes several meters away, this sawed-off shotgun is the perfect ally for pushing the enemy toward traps, or even to stop the progression of a nosy player who has come too close to your base…

·         The LAWBringer MK I
This rocket-launcher brings some serious power to a fight, starting with its longer range and the area of effect -damages caused by the explosion of its missiles. Ideal for an ambush or a team assault, the LAWBringer MK I will seriously make a dent in both the health and the morale of its opponents.

·         Irisium Claws
These sharp blades possess such power and speed that they compensate for the risks taken by engaging close-combat. In addition to harming the enemy without a chance for quick regeneration, the Irisium Claws cause bleeding that deals continuous damage over time, ideal to finish off a fleeing enemy.

Expressing a true will to work with its community, Lightbulb Crew invites all players to express their reactions and comments on the official game forum: http://lightbulbcrew.fr/gamesofglory/forums/

The Kickstarter funding campaign, launched on July 22th, is available at this address: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1358817651/games-of-glory  and presents many more aspects of this powered-up action and team strategy oriented game.

In addition to the Kickstarter Campaign, Lightbulb Crew runs a Steam Greenlight – http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=283567496 allowing active members of the Steam community to vote for Games of Glory as an indie title they want to see showcased on the site.

PlayStation Vita Exclusive “Metrico” Gives Us A Gameplay Trailer & Release Date.

16/7/2014

Picture
Netherlands based developer, Digital Dreams, today released the very first gameplay footage for their PlayStation Vita exclusive action game Metrico. Metrico is set in a world filled with infographics and challenges the player through levels filled with bar charts, line diagrams and pie charts, each of which directly react to the player’s movements, actions and input. For example, one bar diagram might grow with each step a player takes to the left, while another might decline with every jump. Players must explore Metrico and carefully analyze every move to see how they affect the world, and what will help them advance. This game mechanic, called “Input Morphing” forces players to think about actions that they normally don’t consider in a video game. Metrico is a combination of exploration, skill, experimentation, but above all: thinking outside of the box.
Metrico will be available on PlayStation Network the 5th of August in the US and the 6th of August in Europe, exclusively for the PlayStation Vita. Dutch synthesizer composer “Palmbomen” will be featured for Metrico’s music soundtrack and sound effects.

The new gameplay trailer, including the most gameplay you’ve probably ever seen in one video, can be seen below

Out of hundreds of entries received by the conference organisers this year, ten were shortlisted for the showcase by the judging panel, chaired by Adam Green, managing director of Assyria Games, and took into consideration graphics, gameplay, technology achievement and originality. Each studio received a complimentary booth on the expo floor, complimentary indie passes and the chance to demo their game to more than 1,600 top developers, games industry professionals and journalists from all over the world who voted for their favourite.

Andy Brammall, regional sales director, Unity, said: “It is an honour to once again sponsor the Indie Showcase. The creativity, originality and complexity of the games on show has been astonishing and we congratulate all those who made the shortlist.”

Adam Green, chair of the judging panel, added: “The winner was an exceedingly close call this year, but it was SwapQuest that ultimately grabbed the top-spot. The combination of puzzle and role playing elements works exceedingly well. While easy to pick up and play, it takes quite some time to truly master. This combined with the fantastic pixel art, unique mechanics and depth provided through the RPG aspects really caught our attention.”

The Develop in Brighton Conference - Europe's leading conference for the game development community - ran from 8-10 July. In 2015, the dates are 14-16 July. Speaker submissions open in January 2015.

0RBITALIS NEW UPDATES ADDED ON STEAM EARLY ACCESS

16/5/2014

Picture
One-of-a-kind independent developer Alan Zucconi and UK independent publisher Mastertronic today announced a myriad of new updates to gravity simulator 0RBITALIS, currently available on Steam Early Access.

Updated features to further enrich the celestial experience include friend leaderboards and histograms to let players compare score distribution at a glance. Quality settings and zoom effects have also been refined to create a more streamlined experience, and there are new ambient soundtracks from Doseone. Think you’ve mastered your orbit? Ten new levels have now been added to increase the challenge!

Alan Zucconi said: “It's hard to describe the amount of positive feedback I’ve had from the community so far. Seeing people playing for days, trying to achieve a stable orbit, has been the biggest reward for me. This is why the update brings new features such as friends leaderboards and histograms.”

“I also showed the game to the developers of Kerbal Space Program, resulting in a secret level which reproduces the Kerbol System,” continued Alan. “The update also features homages to other big indie titles such as Robin Arnott's SoundSelf. I am looking forward to hearing the players' feedback and I really can't wait for the next update.”

Stuart Morton, Producer at Mastertronic, added: “0RBITALIS has been going down a storm with the thousands of people who have so far picked it up and this update by Alan is the result of their feedback. The Steam Early Access community is a great help for developers and I have no doubt 0RBITALIS will continue to improve.”

0RBITALIS is a simulation that blends physics perfection with gaming, available now on Steam Early Access for PC.

Gone Home is leaving home to come to a console near you soon.

11/3/2014

Picture
The Fullbright Company’s runaway hit Gone Home is making the highly-anticipated move to console, bringing the explorative Greenbriar family experience to a whole new audience. Heralded as one of the best games of 2013, Gone Home extends an invitation into an ordinary family’s mysterious past as a young woman who discovers an empty house that's much more than it seems.
"Ever since we released Gone Home on PC, we've had people asking us-- 'When's it coming to console?,” said Steve Gaynor, writer, designer and co-founder of The Fullbright Company.  “We've been looking and looking for the right partner to help us, and finally after much searching, Midnight City fit the bill. They have a great understanding of what an indie needs, how to get the word out about the game, and help us get the best versions of the game possible to all those players that have been waiting patiently to experience Gone Home in their living rooms. Viva la Midnight City!"

Midnight City, also announced Costume Quest 2, which you can find out more here

Double Fine and Midnight City, will be diving into Costume Quest for a second time.

In Double Fine’s triumphant return to Auburn Pines, our candy-crazed crusaders Wren and Reynold must once again protect Halloween from untold horrors, and grown-ups! Your favorite trick-or-treaters will come armed with a new batch of costumes they wear to transform into giant super powered fantasy Hallowarriors. Yeah, we totally just made that up. Fans of the original can look forward to a sweet upgraded battle system and a story that is unmistakably Double Fine.
"For the last couple of years," said Tim Schafer, Creative Director of Double Fine Productions, "Whenever Halloween came around, I felt like something was missing. No matter how many pumpkins I carved, apples I bobbed, or candy I ate, it just couldn't fill the big spooky hole inside of me. But then I realized what was missing: I needed more Costume Quest. And also, I really wanted a T-Shirt with glowing skulls on it."

Everyone should play Broforce.

11/2/2014

Broforce was born at Ludum Dare 23, an online competition held over the course of a weekend to create a video game. Since then the the developer, Free Lives, have continued to work on the title, and today announced that publisher Developer Digital will help bring the title to Steam Early Access this March.

The game is a cocktail of awesome side scrolling explosions. You control one of many ‘unlockable bros’ based off of 80’s and 90’s action stars using unique weapons and bonuses to destroy enemy soldiers and liberate the world. As you advance through the stages you unlock more characters from the roster (broster?) and you’re soon storming enemy strongholds as Brobocop or RamBro. There’s even a MacGyver based BroGyver who uses his special ability to throw dynamite filled chicken carcasses.

Free Lives have an Brototype (Alpha Build) of the title available on their website if you are interested in checking it out. I spent a good half an hour with it and recorded some gameplay, which is available below.
With a finished release date still unknown, you can preorder Broforce for 15 USD from the Free Lives website or keep an eye out for it’s early access on Steam in March.

Or go play the awesome Brototype right here, right NOW!

Focus on; Shining Rock Software AMA

17/12/2013

by Matt Taylor
Shining Rock Software, and the one man developer behind the upcoming PC title Banished, announced via a Reddit AMA yesterday that he plans on releasing the game in January 2014.
“I’d like the game to be out as soon as possible. Development is pretty much done. I'm hoping for a January release, but this depends on final testing”.
Picture
After being in development for the last three years, Banished has gained a following with it’s amazing in game graphics, original town building and resource management system, dynamic seasons and an original touch with the lack of a combat system. Regarding combat the developer replied with the following,

“Combat is a possibility. I have a design for it - but I'd really need to prototype it before I make a definite decision. Even if it does get added as an expansion, there will always be a way to play without it. I'm in the same mindset as you - sometimes I just want to build without worrying about the town being destroyed.”

Development of the game over the last three years has taken the studio from zombie title into the beautiful piece of software we see today, each of those steps has being recorded through Shining Rock Software’s devlog. Teasing the gaming community with screenshots, videos and updates on the process has kept many salivating at the mouth in anticipation and hopefully January will let us finally get our fill.

At the moment nothing is set in stone, but with a PC version of Banished hopefully here for January stay tuned for more from Shining Rock Software or head over to Reddit for full AMA.

Velocity Ultra touches down on the Steam Store on December 12th

3/12/2013

Obviously Velocity is coming to PC the headline has already announced this but what the headline does not say is how great this is going to be.
The best way for you to find out is to sit back and listen and watch to this video by Matt.
Velocity Ultra touches down on the Steam Store on Thursday December 12th, priced at £6.99 / $9.99 / €8.99.

Originally released simply as Velocity, the game had a full remake this year as a Vita exclusive and achieved some of the best review scores ever seen on the Sony portable achieving a more than respectable Metacritic rating of 87 and receiving 9/10 scores from publications such as Edge and Pocket Gamer.

Velocity Ultra is an arcade shooter that defies the convention of both terms, using the game’s unique teleportation mechanic to add an extra dimension to the action and a puzzle-like element without slowing down the pace.

Running on the PC at a smooth 60 FPS and featuring a phenomenal electronic soundtrack, it’s a game best viewed in motion, which we suggest doing right away.

Originally designed and developed by Brighton based FuturLab, it’s being brought to the PC by Curve Studios, the developer responsible for the elegantly named PC title ‘Stealth Bastard: Tactical Espionage Arsehole’ and published by Curve Digital, the indie publisher formed in 2013 that’s already published games like Thomas Was Alone and Lone Survivor on console formats.

The PC version features every single explosion, level and secret area as the PlayStation Vita original while taking advantage of customisable controls, and full Steamworks support including leaderboards, trading cards and achievements.

Early Impression; STAR WARS® PINBALL: BALANCE OF THE FORCE

16/10/2013

This is a very early view and we will be creating individual reviews for all of the Zen Pinball tables over the coming weeks and beyond. However today the Balance of the Force pack dropped and I have spent some time on each table.
Just for transparency all the scores are form my first full game on the table and I played on the Vita (My platform of choice for Pinball) with the view 4 option selected.

Episode VI

Picture

Score; 16,386,974

Of the original trilogy Return of the Jedi is usually the lowest ranked film and of the three tables its my least favourite.
Its very well presented with a tough opening trick shot but the table feels too wide for the Vita screen. Its a small thing but it really shows as the other tables all feel ideally suited. Otherwise the basic gameplay feels very safe with the specials creating all the buzz.
I can see it may grow on me but I will have to move from usual view

Darth Vader

The most striking thing about this table is the ambient lighting. The glowing red floor creates a menacing table and feels perfectly suited to the character it depicts. The table is pretty fast with a compact set of set in the center.
The specials are based around Vader specific scenes from the Trilogy and they play out with Zen's usual panache. I can see my score growing a lot bigger as it was just silly mistakes that cost.
The Highlight of the table has to be the multiball sections but I will not spoil why except to say Glow.

Score; 107,097,928

Picture

StarFighter Assault

Picture

Score; Rebellion, 41,993816
Score; Empire, 48,772,780

The two scores above are pretty much the reason I love this table. It defines balance with half the table being for the Empire and the Rebellion on the other. However if you think this is the only duality to the table you will be mistaken. At the start you get to decide which Starfighter you will control and this changes the look of the bumpers (they are in the shape of Canons) to the voices and even the Space Invader style mini game. This is my favourite of the three and I know my score will be climbing on bothsides
Overall for £7.99 I can highly recommend the Balance of the force pack, the three tables have the usual polish and will offer a great challenge. Look out for the full reviews coming soon
