BioShock® Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode 1 Available for Download Starting November 12

29/10/2013

“This is a love letter to the fans, but it’s also the beginning of a story that will give gamers a new perspective on the BioShock universe,” said Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games. “With Burial at Sea, we built a Rapture not from BioShock and BioShock Infinite scraps and pieces, but with environments almost entirely crafted from scratch.”
To be honest the title says it all. One of this generations best titles will be releasing its DLC starting on the 12th of November (13th for PS3 Europe). The question will be can the finest of the generation have the pull to keep away the next gen? We will soon get the chance to see and from Ken Levine's quote above it seems they are aiming for the stars with their underwater escapade.

In the weekend that saw Seb Vettel record his fourth straight title, it may also be forgotten that other teams are still racing in their own championships. The smaller teams like Caterham are not as big as Ferrrari, McLaren or Red Bull but they are still pushing hard to be top of the new team league.

Volume - Story Announcement

25/10/2013

Picture
Mike Bithell, creator of Bafta award winning game, Thomas Was Alone, has announced new details about his upcoming MGS homage, Volume. Speaking, quite appropriately, from Nottingham Castle at this year's Game City event, Mike has also revealed the actors involved in the project.

Volume tells the story of Robert Locksley, a petty thief who stumbles upon a volume, a training simulator used to train the forces of an ongoing military coup. With a matter of hours until he is found, and an excellent internet connection, he hatches a plan to broadcast simulations of robbery against England's wealthiest, to demonstrate to the nation's poorest. With the assistance of the volume's tutorial AI he sets out to become the world's first crime Let's Player. Along the way, he'll draw the attention of Gisborne, architect of the revolution, and many potential allies.

Volume adapts the story of Robin Hood to a near future setting for a new generation. The heroic anarchist of legend is reborn as a charming show-off who plans to turn a lucky accident into a chance to save his country and become a hero.

Two of the game's stars have also been revealed. First up is Danny Wallace, playing the friendly if slightly weaponry obsessed AI who supports Robert in his mission. Danny won a BAFTA for his narration of Thomas Was Alone, Bithell's last game, and he is excited to be back working with him. Starring as Robert, himself, is Charlie McDonnell, youtube star and the talent behind charlieissocoollike. This will be his first video game appearance, and Mike is 'super excited' to be bringing in such an 'awesome' chap.

The following Sunday (27th of October) at 4pm, Mike and Charlie will be onstage at the MCM Expo in London, taking questions about the game and showing off some gameplay.

You can find out more info about the game at his site or follow @mikebithell on twitter

Time to whip out your wallets, Saints Row IV 'Enter the Dominatrix DLC released tomorrow

22/10/2013

Picture
The new DLC from Volition is out tomorrow. Originally destined as DLC for Saints Row III, but with such a compelling central idea that Volition turned it into a fully fledged game, 'Enter the Dominatrix' is finally here to play as extra content for Saints Row IV.

With boundless self-referential humour squashed into a couple of hours of content, expect to get more of the same batshit-crazy fun you have already seen in the main game. This is not just a skin pack, or extra weapon download package (although there are some new fun weapons and outfits to be had as you play), but actually extra story content which adds to the main game without ruining any of the existing canon. You can actually play even before finishing the main story, however you do have to reach a certain level to be able to access the missions and side quests.

The story presents you with the Saints being interviewed by a reporter on their spaceship about the DLC pack. That's right, in the usual smash down of the fourth wall, the Saints discuss the history of the famous DLC-that-became-a-game in the actual DLC itself, with each character commenting on their roles within. The missions are presented as flashbacks, which you play through with tongue-in-cheek comments from all the crew narrated over your gameplay.

Picture
The missions are a pure joy, as ever, with the emphasis being placed on unadulterated fun, rather than challenging gameplay. There is plenty of fan service being pushed out too, with many references to geek-genre entertainment, although, as the name suggests, the Wachowski bros do get hit with the parody paddle on plenty of occasions. One particular protagonist, in sunglasses and long leather jacket, features, making complaints about the editing process of the game which left out many of his favourite lines. This is much like the minor character from the original Matrix movies who appeared with a more important role in the disappointing game tie-in.

There are plenty more gaming-related jokes too.  At the beginning your character pointedly ignores a request to go through the laborious tutorial process as, quite rightly, the player should know all this by now (much like the beginning of Blood Dragon). There are some pretty funny scathing comments from the Saints about having to do the usual fetch quests and escort missions, and pixelated fast forwarding of some of Kenzie's tech related exposition, with a loud, "BORING!" from the president. The final level reaches new heights of (self-confessed) craziness and the primitive cut scene footage is another homage to the cutting room floor style of the DLC. The scene with The Saints travelling out of Paul's head made me laugh out loud.

If you are feeling jaded after putting many hours into GTAV, Enter the Dominatrix is a very welcome tonic; it certainly put a smile on my face. It is no coincidence that Volition are releasing this DLC now, their timing is pretty good. It certainly made me want to jump back into Steelport for a bit of gimp bashing, so to speak. If you've played the main game already, or are still missing wielding your big purple dildo bat, I can throughly recommend downloading this. You might be cautious about spending £5.99 for two hours play, but this gets you a package (ahem) of high density fun and genuinely good humour. Whip-crackingly good.

Monopoly gets the Walking Dead treatment

21/10/2013

Picture
Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead has inspired a wealth of products in a wide range of areas.

The latest addition is a survival based Monopoly game, The details of which are below.
Despite its post-apocalyptic setting, MONOPOLY: The Walking Dead Survival Edition delivers a classic Monopoly wheeling and dealing game play.  Players fight for, and then must fortify the prime real estate and resources that will sustain their lives.  The game takes over the characteristic of The Walking Dead as the properties all correspond with the series landmarks.  Instead of using money to purchase property, players must trade in essential supplies to gain more territory on the board or to place a guard tower or wall instead of the standard houses and hotels, to secure their properties from invading zombies.

Rugby League Live 2; World Cup Edition coming in November

17/10/2013

Believe it or not but there is a World Cup going on in England and Wales over the next month or so.
To celebrate this Tru-Blu are releasing a World Cup Edition of Rugby league live 2, the game will release on the 21st of November for both PS3 & Xbox360 with a number of updates from the core game (see panel below for more info).
For those unsure about which Rugby this game concerns it's League, the 13 man variant, more commonly popular in the north of England (even though I played it as a youngster). The game is extremely quick and due to its stop/start nature generally more easy to understand than the 15 man melee that is union.
It's great to see sports titles like this being made as an every point for New fans as well as giving loyal fans a chance to play the game they love.

Review; The Wolf Among Us; Episode 1

16/10/2013

Episode VI

Picture

Score; 16,386,974

Of the original trilogy Return of the Jedi is usually the lowest ranked film and of the three tables its my least favourite.
Its very well presented with a tough opening trick shot but the table feels too wide for the Vita screen. Its a small thing but it really shows as the other tables all feel ideally suited. Otherwise the basic gameplay feels very safe with the specials creating all the buzz.
I can see it may grow on me but I will have to move from usual view

Darth Vader

The most striking thing about this table is the ambient lighting. The glowing red floor creates a menacing table and feels perfectly suited to the character it depicts. The table is pretty fast with a compact set of set in the center.
The specials are based around Vader specific scenes from the Trilogy and they play out with Zen's usual panache. I can see my score growing a lot bigger as it was just silly mistakes that cost.
The Highlight of the table has to be the multiball sections but I will not spoil why except to say Glow.

Score; 107,097,928

Picture

StarFighter Assault

Picture

Score; Rebellion, 41,993816
Score; Empire, 48,772,780

The two scores above are pretty much the reason I love this table. It defines balance with half the table being for the Empire and the Rebellion on the other. However if you think this is the only duality to the table you will be mistaken. At the start you get to decide which Starfighter you will control and this changes the look of the bumpers (they are in the shape of Canons) to the voices and even the Space Invader style mini game. This is my favourite of the three and I know my score will be climbing on bothsides
Overall for £7.99 I can highly recommend the Balance of the force pack, the three tables have the usual polish and will offer a great challenge. Look out for the full reviews coming soon

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition Rekeases New Screenshots, Concept Art and Music Samples

15/10/2013

Picture
Before there was Mass Effect Bioware were busy delving into the Forgotten Realms in search of adventure and they struck gold with the Baldur's Gate series. For many this was their entry point into RPG's and the memory of this game has remained a constant source of frustration that the series was never brought up to date.
(The above may just be me (Paul), but I love the Forgotten Realms Books with the Dark Elf Trilogy being my favourite series. So the Baldur's gate games naturally fit into my love for the world).
So it is with baited breath that I await the 15th of November to arrive when (as long as my new PC has arrived) I will get the chance to play the enhanced version of the game. To tied many like me over we have a few screens and a link to the Beamdog Soundcloud page where you can listen to some wonderful audio while you go about your day.

WATCH_DOGS DELAYED UNTIL SPRING 2014

15/10/2013

Picture
Following is a statement directly from the Watch_Dogs development teams announcing the delay of all versions to Spring 2014:
“Our ambition from the start with Watch_Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming. It is with this in mind that we’ve made the tough decision to delay the release until Spring 2014.

We know a lot of you are probably wondering ‘why now?’ We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune every detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you. We thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the way you respond on the web, at events, press conferences and during other opportunities we have to interact. Your passion is what drives us.

We can’t wait to see you in Chicago next Spring. We are confident you’ll love this game as much as we love working on it.”
