Deathtrap, the First Tower-Defense Game From NeocoreGames, Announced

26/8/2014

Picture
Beyond the veil of this world, deep in the whirling mists of the otherworld there are islands in the void. They give home to a chain of strongholds that were once built to keep the horrors of the void at bay. And now the monsters are returning to conquer and kill. Legendary beasts are waking up from their slumber, creatures of mad science flee from the secret laboratories and the eternal night breeds living shadows once more.

Only you can stop the horrors before they break through to the everyday world. Choose your hero carefully and defend the underground mazes and the silent forts. Use, rebuild and improve the ancient traps and rusty machines that fill the vaults.

Deathrap is a unique mixture of action-RPGs and Tower Defense games, a game of vicious tricks, killing machines, rotating blades and splattering blood.

Be clever, be quick – and show no mercy.

Breaking: Lizard Squad contacted American Airlines over bomb hoax on SOE Presidents flight.

24/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
A little under two hours ago the hacking group Lizard Squad, who have taken credit for the DDoS attacks on the Playstation Network, have contacted American Airlines over a possible bomb on the President of Sony Online Entertainment’s flight.

Through their Twitter account, Lizard Squad direct tweeted to @AmericanAir and tagged John Smedley, current SOE President. In the tweet they mention the flight number Smedley was travelling on and reported that there may be “explosives on-board”.
Picture
As with all bomb threats, it appears that the airline has taken serious steps, with Smedley tweeting that his flight has been redirected and grounded.

From cyber crime to real life, national security threats; Lizard Squad are kicking a pretty big hornets nest.

Sony’s Playstation Network goes offline. Hackers taking responsibility.

24/8/2014

by Matt Taylor
If you can’t logon to Sony’s Playstation Network today, you may not be the only one, with multiple server’s apparently on the receiving end of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack) attack.
Picture
The attacks started earlier today, by a group of hackers going by the name of Lizard Squad. Since the attacks multiplayer gaming and access to the Playstation Store has been affected.

The group have kept everyone updated with updates from their Twitter feed, which fifteen minutes (at the time of writing this) ago wrote “THE FEDS ARE HERE SHIT”. If Federal Agents are involved, it may be a short time before service is resumed.

Sony are not immune to cyber attacks, with the company landing in hot water in 2011 after their security was breached and the details of 77 million accounts were stolen. At the time this was one of the largest cyber security breaches history.

New Destiny Trailer shows off Venus Gameplay

18/8/2014

Picture
With three weeks until release, Bungie are teasing more gameplay of the Destiny missions. In this latest trailer we see a fire team on a mission to Venus. The action comes thick and fast and, despite some rather nice looking outfits from the players, not much is given away apart from more gorgeous environments. Obviously Bungie are keen to show that there is more to offer since worries were raised that the recent Beta felt a bit underweight in terms of new and fresh content. We wait with bated breath...

Namco Bandai Games Europe Announces Tales of Xillia 2 for Playstation 3

14/8/2014

Picture
NAMCO BANDAI Games Europe have announced that Tales of Xillia 2 will be released on 22nd August exclusively for the PlayStation 3.  Building on 2013’s Tales of Xillia gameplay and world, Tales of Xillia 2 is introducing two new protagonists, Alvin and Elize.

Once a spy, the confident and brash Alvin has turned over a new leaf and struggles to lead a simple, honest life as a salesman. With his friend Yurgen, they forge a partnership in a business enterprise together… but as Alvin soon learns, there’s nothing easy about living an honest life. Will he remain true to the straight and narrow path he has chosen? Or will his shady past inevitably catch up with him?

Once painfully shy, Elize has warmed up considerably after the events of the first game and is more willing to trust others. However, she still looks for her own place in society, and yearns for companionship and acceptance from her peers. She eventually finds it in the form of her pen pal, Luna, but there may be more to her newfound friend than meets the eye.

Tales of Xillia 2 focuses on the events a year after the climactic end of Tales of Xillia.  Players assume the role of Ludger Kresnik, a young man with a zest of cooking who lives with his older brother and his cat, named Rollo.  On his way to his first day at work for a local cafeteria he runs into a young girl named Elle Marta and the two soon become involved in an accident that will change both of their lives forever. The game focuses its story theme around the concept of “choice”, which is also expressed heavily in the game’s overall gameplay mechanics.  Throughout Ludger’s journey the player will be able to decide how he reacts to various characters and situations.  These choices can cause the story to branch out into different paths depending on the player’s decisions.

Choice also extends to the battle system by enhancing the TALES OF series’ trademark gameplay.  Players will be able to initiate “Weapon Swap” in real-time during battles while controlling Ludger, allowing him to switch between three main weapons: dual blades, a sledgehammer and dual pistols, allowing for fast and strategic movements as he rushes across the battlefield.  Building on the base from the previous battle system, the new Cross Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System will let players link to any selectable character in battle to serve as a support character and perform linked artes against targeted enemies.  Different party members have different support characteristics and linked artes, allowing players to strategically decide which characters are linked to whom as various battle situations arise.

Skylanders Trap Team

Picture
Fans attending Gamescom will get a special Skylanders treat -- the first hands-on opportunity to play Skylanders Trap Team with a new line of cute, pocket-sized Skylanders characters, called Skylanders Minis. Sixteen of the smallest but surprisingly powerful Skylanders are now joining the fight against Skylands’ most nefarious villains.  Diminutive in stature but mighty in battle, Skylanders Minis will deliver a full Skylanders wallop as completely playable characters with upgrades and abilities, just like any other Skylanders, including the ability to trap villains.

At Gamescom, visitors in the Gamescom Family Area ((Hall 10.2) -- who are “mini” enough to enter the smallest booth Activision has ever built -- will be able to play with the new Minis.  Only those that meet the Skylanders Mini booth’s required height restrictions will get the chance to be the first in the world to play with five of the new Minis: Spry, Mini Jini, Drobit, Trigger Snappy and Hijinx. Visitors to the Family area will also have the chance to visit the Skylanders photo booth, where fans can be photographed as if they’ve been ‘trapped’ in TraptaniumTM, just like the infamous villains in the game.

Ahead of Gamescom, Activision also announced that it is bringing the complete Skylanders Trap Team videogame to tablets at launch, marking the first time a full Skylanders game will be available on iOS, Android and Kindle Fire tablet devices day-and-date with the console version. The tablet version of the game delivers the same experience, with console-quality graphicsi[i] and high performance game controls as its console counterpart, delivering yet another significant technological leap to the Skylanders franchise. It is playable with touch controls or a Bluetooth® enabled controller that comes with the tablet Starter Pack.

Skylanders Trap Team will be available on October 10 in Europe, October 5 in North America and October 2 in Australia/New Zealand on the following platforms: a variety of iOS, Android and Kindle Fire tablets; Xbox One and Xbox 360 games and entertainment systems from Microsoft; PlayStation 4 system; PlayStation 3 system; Nintendo's Wii system and Nintendo's Wii U system. A different, unique adventure also will be available on the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system.

James Woodrow, Utopian World of Sandwiches Director added “We came to Play Expo in 2012 and had a great time playing Chompies with everyone. CALL OF DUTY: ADVANCED WARFARE MULTIPLAYER - more features revealed.

12/8/2014

Picture
Sledgehammer Games have revealed more information about the new multiplayer features for Advanced Warfare. We are all hoping for a radical change on the current style of multiplayer which, while popular among the hardcore among us, needs a fresh update in the overcrowded FPS genre. Feast your eyes on the the details below:
  1. It all starts with the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare exoskeleton and the fundamental way it changes player movement delivering a new level of tactical combat. Speed, strength, agility, and verticality transform how you play. New abilities, movements, perks, equipment and weapon classes offer fans the most personalized, customizable and reward-based Call of Duty multiplayer. It all comes together to make each player feel like a tier one soldier of the future.

ADVANCED EXOSKELETON MOVEMENT: With the addition of the exoskeleton movements, the speed of the game increases dramatically. Boost Jump makes higher sightlines easily reachable and offers a new level of vertically. Boost Dodge delivers enhanced maneuverability, while Boost Dash provides mid-air evasive maneuverability. And Boost Slam empowers a new air-to-ground melee attack. It comes to life when players combine and chain these new mechanics to move through the map and engage with the enemy unlike anything ever in Call of Duty.

The exoskeleton offers new opportunities for specific exo abilities as detailed below. With the introduction of the variable grenade, the tactical slot in the create-a-class is now open for players to choose an exoskeleton ability.

SUPPLY DROPS: In Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare customization begins with Supply Drops, which is loot Call of Duty style, bringing a new reward system of more than 1,000 rewards into multiplayer. Supply Drops reward you with items, including Custom Weapons, Character Gear and Reinforcements. And these rewards come in three rarities – Enlisted, Professional, and Elite. In addition, to ranking through XP, Supply Drops will be rewarded through play time and in game challenges.

Custom Weapons: Attribute and cosmetic modifications on base weapons make up the nearly 350 custom weapon options that you can get from supply drops. These new modifications allow a greater range of customization to find the perfect weapon for individual play styles in addition to having a great look.

  • Gear: Supply drops can also feature gear that allows you to customize your operator for the virtual lobby and in-game. The wide variety of cosmetic customization that players can get through gear will allow everyone on the field to know who you are.

  • Reinforcements: Players can also be rewarded with one-time-use items that are activated during the match at pre-determined intervals, including perks and low-level scorestreaks. These are great for a one-time trial and burst of added excitement in match. And, like all Supply Drop rewards, Reinforcements come in the three rarity classes – Enlisted, Profession, and Elite.

WEAPONS: In Advanced Warfare, players have unprecedented options to find the weapon that best suits their needs. Each weapon features 10 custom options, where cosmetics and attributes vary, which ultimately deliver nearly 350 custom weapons out of the box. On top that, each weapon delivers a spectrum of attachment options, including tried and true attachments as well as all new ones to augment your weapon.

A NEW WEAPON CLASS: The high tech nature of 2054 is coming to multiplayer and there is no better example than the directed energy weapons. The new Heavy Weapons class includes directed energy weapons like the EM1 and EMPm2. These new weapons use the power of weaponized energy to overcome enemies. This class of weapon doesn’t rely on reloads, but instead they are known to overheat after too much activity.

PICK 13: The much loved Pick 10 create-a-class format is back with even more customizable options than before. You can now choose which scorestreaks will be included with your class. This addition to the beloved create-a-class format provides more depth to player strategy and play style. In addition to combining scorestreaks with your class, players can customize scorestreaks to make them more powerful, for a cost. For example, players can customize a Remote Turret into a Rocket Turret Module. In addition to customizable scorestreaks, the game introduces Co-Op Scorestreaks, which for the first time, two players can now join up a scorestreak and work together. This is the perfect example of teamwork for those players that rack up score, with those that may not always get the chance to experience the high-end scorestreaks. Teaming up on a Warbird is a perfect way to gain the advantage on the battlefield.

EXO ABILITIES: Brand new to Advanced Warfare, you now have the opportunity to augment your exo through additional exo abilities. Unlike the exo movements that every player has, exo abilities are selectable within Pick 13. For a slot, of course. These new exo abilities are activated by the player during the match, and used until the Exo Battery is depleted.

  • Exo Shield – A quick-deploy shield attached to your exo’s arm

  • Exo Overclock – Increased footspeed

  • Exo Stim – Temporary health regeneration beyond normal levels

  • Exo Cloak – Short duration visual concealment

  • Exo Hover – Short duration hovering in place

  • Exo Ping – Shows enemy movement and weapon fire in the HUD

  • Exo Trophy System – Destroys incoming grenades and rockets for a limited period of time

EXO PERKS: A slate of new perks impact exo abilities like a perk that suppresses boost so that it’s quieter and as a result a player’s thrusters don’t give away your location on the mini map. Another is the gung-ho perk, which allows players to re-load while sprinting, and shoot while sliding. There’s also exo overcharge, which gives players more energy for their exo battery. Exo Perks take up slots and depend on how players choose to approach their class, but within all customization, there is plenty of flexibility to make your soldier as powerful as you think he can be in the situations you’re playing in.

VIRTUAL FIRING RANGE: An all-new feature, and a first for Call of Duty. From the Create-a-Class menu or between matches, players can instantly hit the Virtual Firing Range to try out a new item with just a press of the button. No map load, no having to blindly go into a match with a new loadout. Now, players can get an immediate feel for things like the sights, attachments, bullet spread, recoil, and more before the next match even starts. It’s a great way to test-drive a new weapon before heading into battle.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION: Take your Call of Duty character to a new level by selecting the heads, eyewear, helmets, shirts, vest kits, gloves, pants, knee guards, boots and even the exoskeleton itself. The possible combinations, including selecting male or female characters, are nearly limitless.

VIRTUAL LOBBY: Advanced Warfare transforms the lobby experience for the first time in Call of Duty, providing the personalized true, virtual showcase called the Virtual Lobby. This is where all of a player’s hard work, both XP Progression and Supply Drop rewards are paid-off for all to see. In the Virtual Lobby you can quickly and easily see everyone’s character in all its glory. Just slide over and look at each character in detail. With their loadouts. With their customization options. With their rare Supply Drop custom weapons, gear and reinforcements as well as weapons, loadouts and all the gear from your character customization, the Virtual Lobby is the best way to show off to friends, or get a peek at something cool that someone else has earned, and to let your accomplishments speak for themselves.

GAME MODES: Advanced Warfare includes fan favorites Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Hardpoint, Search & Destroy, Domination and Team Domination, and more – all delivering new exoskeleton gameplay abilities, as well as:

  • Uplink – Uplink has been built with teamwork in mind, and to promote fast and frantic competitive gameplay. Both teams fight for control of a satellite drone, and must race – with it in hand – to the opponent’s uplink.

  • Momentum – Based on the War game mode originally found in Call of Duty®: World at War, Momentum is the Call of Duty version of tug of war. Five consecutive capture points exist on the map, but only one is active at a time. The more kills and captures your team gets, the faster you are able to capture additional points. Once the other team captures on you, the momentum meter gets reset, so your team needs to be at its best the whole game.

    MAPS: (Announced to date)

  • Biolab – Part of a snowy secret base, this map features both close quarters indoor combat along with long range outdoor terrain with added verticality for quick and fast-paced action. Use your Exo boost to take the action to the rooftops.

  • Riot – Set in a bombed out prison after a devastating riot, this penitentiary still has some defense mechanisms active. Crafted to utilize a classic 3-lane approach, this map offers two large open areas on both sides of the map along with a large cell block right in the center for an all-comers shoot-out that thrusts players right into the action.

  • Ascend - Taking place in a futuristic Space Elevator terminal, this location features a map-based score streak that allows players to call in the turret defenses. Ascend also was designed with clean 3-Lane format and a verticality that is tailor made for exoskeleton abilities.

  • Defender – In the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, an abandoned bunker that’s features open gameplay and is a perfect showcase for the new exoskeleton abilities. An added aspect to this map is the dynamic event. A tsunami hits with strategic regularity and changes a good portion of the map.

will be playable for the first time at Gamescom 2014 in Cologne. At the Deep Silver booth in Hall 9.1, B11/C10, players can enjoy a zombie slaughterfest just below the famous Hollywood sign.

Dead Island 2
picks up the Dead Island and Escape Dead Islandstoryline several months after the events on the Banoi islands. The United States military has put the Golden State under full quarantine which, for some, is a dream come true with a promise of a fresh start. California’s newfound bloody paradise is an action-packed playground featuring the acclaimed, seamless multiplayer for up to eight players who cooperate, compete or simply coexist in a truly social, new-gen multiplayer experience.

Xbox One Digital TV Tuner coming to select markets in Europe

10/8/2014

Picture
Since launch, it’s been our vision to bring more entertainment features and enable live TV through Xbox One to more markets around the world. We know our fans in Europe have been asking for this functionality on Xbox Feedback and today, we’re pleased to announce that Xbox One users in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will be able to experience premium live TV features on Xbox One, such as the ability to access your favourite shows and channels with the sound of your voice* through the OneGuide, with the new Xbox One Digital TV Tuner.

Beginning in October, the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner will be available in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, providing Xbox One users in those markets with an over-the-air digital terrestrial TV experience through the USB single tuner, an alternative to accessing TV content from a cable or satellite set-top box connected through the HDMI-In port. The new digital TV tuner will also support free-to-air DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-C television standards.

Here’s a list of the capabilities enabled by the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner:

•          Watch HD TV on Xbox One: With the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner, you can watch free-to-air DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-C television channels without changing TV inputs. You can receive game invitations and notifications while watching TV and even watch TV while you wait for a multiplayer match to start.

•          TV Viewing in Snap Mode: You can watch TV using the Snap mode, watching TV on the side and leaving the main screen for games, Skype, or other applications.

•          Pause Live TV: Pause your favorite show when you get up to take a break.

•          TV Listings in the OneGuide: TV listings will be available in the OneGuide. From anywhere, say “Xbox show guide, what’s on BBC One?” to quickly navigate directly to that channel’s listings*.

•          Favourite Channels in the OneGuide: Create your own personal Favourites in the OneGuide so you can easily choose what you want to watch.

•          Channel Tuning by Voice: The OneGuide allows you to call out your favourite TV channel by name and start watching it instantly*.

•          The OneGuide on Xbox SmartGlass: Now you have access to the full OneGuide on the new Xbox SmartGlass app with the ability to tune channels on your TV.

•          TV On Demand: TV listings in the OneGuide will indicate which shows are available on demand from video apps.

The Xbox One Digital TV Tuner will be available beginning late October in the UK for £24.99.

*Kinect required for voice-enabled features

Gaijin Paying Players to Generate Content

10/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Gaijin Entertainment have announced a new initiative aimed at rewarding players who create content shared in War Thunder with a portion of the revenue generated by their creations.

Since April, “War Thunder Live” allowed players and community members to produce their own content for the massive multiplayer war simulator, with the ability to design, upload and share missions, skins and vehicle models. This also allows shared content to be commented on and “liked”, with players discussing their thoughts on the designs and creations.

Not stopping there, Gaijin announced that the v1.43 update to War Thunder would see content creators receiving a piece of the pie, with the best user-created content being incorporated into the game and making it available for purchase to all War Thunder players. Content successful enough to be incorporated into the main game, Gaijin Entertainment say,  could earn up to “25% of the adjusted gross revenue from any sales their content make, less taxes and other applicable fees”. That’s a lot of Golden Eagles.

Gaijin’s Content Developer Kit (CDK) is available for download today, with the Gaijin stating that anyone could create content for War Thunder depending on the creators skill level. Basic knowledge of design programs should be enough for skins and paint work, with more advanced skills necessary for vehicle models and missions.

This is definitely an interesting idea and by allowing the community to play such a large role in development, could win over the hearts and minds of players from competing titles.

Picture
Why this has piqued our interest

With a historic feel Ryse was something different in the launch line up of the XboxOne, After some good reviews it seemed to be trying something different and mostly succeeded.

Now this exclusive will be coming to PC giving a wider audience a chance to Battle Roman Style.
Ryse: Son of Rome, is coming to PC this Fall. While Crytek will publish the game on digital channels, they will collaborate with the co-publishing partner Deep Silver for the boxed version distribution to retail stores. In addition, all of the Ryse: Son of Rome DLC packages that have been created and released since launch will be included in the PC version.

“We are bringing the Ryse experience to PC, with 4K resolution support,” says Carl Jones, Director of Business Development at Crytek. “4K gaming is another leap in graphics quality for PC gamers and Ryse is the perfect showcase for what’s now possible in high-end PC games.  We’ve given our team the opportunity to show what CRYENGINE can really achieve, without compromising quality, thanks to the incredible hardware available now to PC gamers.  Ryse will be a benchmark PC graphics showcase this year and probably for a long time in future.  Our community asked for a Ryse PC version, and we have the means and technology to deliver this title with the highest quality possible.

The PC version of Ryse will come with bonus material originally released as downloadable content, including: The Colosseum Pack containing two character skins and two Arena maps; the Mars’ Chosen Pack containing one new character skin, four Arena maps, and the new Survival mode; the Duel of Fates Pack containing two character skins, two Arena maps, and one additional Survival map; and the Morituri Pack, with three new Arena maps, two Survival maps, and five solo Arena maps. Finally, PC players will also have instant access to the Ruins multiplayer map the sword “Legionnaire’s Trust” initially released as part of a special edition of the game.

Mortal Kombat X - Raiden Character Variation Gameplay

Why this has Piqued our interest

Any Mortal Kombat news is good news in my opinion but the way that Raiden is looking makes we want this game even more than before.

If the team can recreate the magic of story from the last game then I will be very happy but for now I will have to make do with this lovely trailer instead.
Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios released a new Mortal Kombat X gameplay video showing off series veteran, Raiden, as he pummels sun god, Kotal Kahn in a battle of epic proportions.

Narrated by Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm Studios’ creative director Ed Boon, the new gameplay video guides players through Raiden’s character variations and play styles, each with their own offensive and defensive advantages. The video highlights three of the protector of Earthrealm’s fighting styles: “Thunder God, Displacer” and “Storm Lord.”

Toren coming to PC, Mac and Playstation 4

5/8/2014

By Matt Taylor

Toren is a puzzle/adventure game made by Brazilian independent developer Swordtales and will be available on Windows PC, Mac and Playstation 4, through a partnership with publisher Versus Evil.

The game looks incredible, with the developer promising that the story  “takes the audience in a torrent of discoveries about the greatest myth of all, the meaning of life”. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more about Toren in the upcoming months.

The game is one of the first Brazilian video game that is being sponsored by the Brazilian Cultural Incentive Law, which sees Brazilian businesses use what they owe in corporate taxes to sponsor cultural projects within Brazil. Pretty interesting concept and a great way to help the local game industry.

Toren will be available in the early part of 2015.

Velocity 2X Release Date Announced.

5/8/2014

By Matt Taylor
Picture
Brighton based developer FuturLab, the team behind the award winning Velocity and Velocity Ultra have announced a release date for the sequel, Velocity 2X.

Returning to the seat of the Quarp Jet, a space fighter capable of teleporting, players can expect to blast their way through hundreds of enemies at break neck speeds, fighting against the clock as well as the evil alien Zetachron.

In addition to the normal gameplay styles, Futurlab have also added some new flavour to the game, with boss battles against large enemy ships and side-scrolling platform elements. Shown in their recent trailer, the player is seen to battling a boss structure before teleporting inside of it. Inside, the player is then able to run through the halls of the damaged ship, blasting and destroying as she goes. My main issue with Velocity Ultra stemmed from the lack of gameplay changes in the later part of the game and both of these additions should add depth to the Velocity series.

Velocity 2X will be available on the Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita from the 2nd of September in North America and from the 3rd in the United Kingdom.

You can read some of my impressions of Velocity Ultra here

The Swapper is out today on PlayStation 3, 4 and Vita & here's the trailer to prove it along with Matt's review.
