School’s out and so are the gadgets at the Science Museum, where it is going console crazy for two weeks of interactive gaming fun with Power UP. This hands-on and fully interactive gaming event is the perfect summer activity for all the family. Running until Sunday 7 August, Power UP features the very best video games, computers and consoles from the past 40 years. Everything on display can be touched and played – so it is hands on and game on!

With over 160 systems and hundreds of games that are all fully operable and available to play on - from Pong and Pacman to Lego and Halo - there is something to suit beginners and experts, competitive parents, multiplayers, retro fans and everybody else in between. Running in partnership with leading gaming specialists European Gaming League (EGL), gamer girls and boys are in for a museum experience like no other.

The very latest Next Gen consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One will be on hand in addition to the latest craze in VR, Occulus Rift - alongside classic PC titles Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog and a host of Disney and Batman games. So parents and kids alike can each show off their skills to the other!

Split into multiple zones, featuring the most loved and popular games linked by theme, content and brand – from Atari and SEGA to PlayStation and Nintendo, Power UP offers players of all ages the perfect opportunity to experience science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) at its liveliest: up-close and hands-on.

Early programmable computers and classic 80s educational games will also be playable alongside the most current and contemporary of games - highlighting just how far and fast gaming culture has developed over the past 40 years.

Tickets can be bought on the day from the museum but advance online booking is recommended for the four times daily 90 minute sessions, which start at 11.00. Day passes and family tickets are available. Adult Only sessions for ages 18+ are also running in the evenings on 29 July, 30 July and 5 August and Power UP will run as part of the Science Museum’s July Lates on Wednesday 27 July.

Alistair Otto, Science Museum Group Commercial Experiences Manager comments: “We really do feel this is THE ideal summer holiday solution both for kids who want to stay in and spend time online transfixed to their consoles and computers, and adults desperately keen to get them out to see the great, many museums London has to offer. Once here, not only do visitors get a unique opportunity to experience all of the very best games from the past 40 years – games that their parents grew up with – but they get to see that museums can be cool and exciting places offering experiences that can be relevant, fun, interactive and interesting.”

Power UP runs from Friday 22 July to Sunday 7 August at the Science Museum, London. It is recommended for ages 5+. Additional family friendly activities for all ages are running at the museum throughout the school holidays. Full details available via www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/powerup.

World of Warships Sets New Course

8/7/2016

The team introduces a revamped matchmaker, more game modes and new approach to the development process
Picture
The World of Warships Team has chartered a new development course—short-term dev cycles. This reorganized process means players can expect updates every three weeks, which allows the team to react and implement community demands quickly. Along with making frequent small tweaks, fixing bugs and fine-tuning the overall experience, developers will continue to enrich gameplay with big features and content developments that will be implemented step by step to ensure they are shipshape.

This new approach was first used on weather effects that were added stepwise over several updates. The team started by introducing them on one map for tiers 8–10, tested these effects thoroughly and, listening to player feedback, fully polished the feature, then implemented it for vessels of Tier 6 and higher across 11 maps.

Today, short-term dev cycles introduces revamped matchmaking, with the developers having upgraded the algorithm to further balance teams. Now, players will find their battles even more exciting, as the matchmaker will strive to make both teams even more equal in force, yet still diverse in gameplay style. Now more than ever, neither team has the upper hand, and victory hinges on player skills and teamwork.
Player feedback led the developers to implement additional ribbons to better check battle performance. So, if players score a ricochet, over-penetration, and more, they’ll be notified. Plus, the addition of a real time damage counter lets captains keep an eye on how much punishment they’re doling out.

World of Warships is also experimenting with new game modes to diversify the experience. The team is currently working on several prototypes, and, starting today, the Bastion game mode will only be available for high-tier battles on the Atlantic map. In it, players will be able to take part in assaulting or defending onshore installations.

Later in July another game mode will become available for testing—Epicenter—with more details to be disclosed soon. The team will also be working towards releasing the first iteration of integrated voice chat along with many anticipated improvements to the visibility system, minimap and account leveling.
