New Batman: Arkham Knight screens, show why this is my most anticipated game of 2014 (Paul)

28/3/2014

The announcement that Rocksteady were going to be creating the new Batman Title caused quite a stir when it was initially announced. The Arkham franchise is perhaps one of the best of the last generation but it will be great to see what the studio can do going into this new era of gaming.  All I can say it that I am desperate to play this game and we will be following the game until its release.

Irrational Games delivers its final episode and concludes the story of BioShock Infinite and Burial at Sea

25/3/2014

Picture
2K and Irrational Games announced today thatBioShock® Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode Two is downloadable* in all available territories** on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC starting today.

BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode Two, developed from the ground up by Irrational Games, is the final content pack for the award-winning BioShock Infinite, and features Elizabeth in a film noir-style story that provides players with a different perspective on the BioShock universe.

“I think the work the team did on this final chapter speaks for itself,” said Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games. “We built something that is larger in scope and length, and at the same time put the player in Elizabeth’s shoes. This required overhauling the experience to make the player see the world and approach problems as Elizabeth would: leveraging stealth, mechanical insight, new weapons and tactics. The inclusion of a separate 1998 Mode demands the player complete the experience without any lethal action. BioShock fans are going to plotz.”

*BioShock Infinite is not included in this add-on content, but is required to play all of the included content.
**BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode Two will be available in Japan later this year

SMITE release; The Gods are ready but are you?

25/3/2014

When I reviewed Smite earlier this week I said they had grand ambitions and as the game launches some of these plans are already coming in to play. The news the launch tournament will have a $200,000 dollar prize purse shows the strength of the new title and we hope it will become a big player on the esports scene to find out why you can read our review here
Hi-Rez Studios, a leading developer of free-to-play online action games, has today officially  released  their MOBA SMITE in North America and Europe. The free-to-play, mythology-themed game has accrued over 3 million registered players during its extended Open Beta phase. A cinematic teaser for SMITE has been released to coincide with the launch. The game also includes localised versions in French, Spanish and German.

Hi-Rez is celebrating the launch with a $200,000 Launch Tournament that will take place Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30, 2014, in Atlanta, Georgia in front of a live audience. Half of the $200,000 prize pool is community contributed, based on sales of exclusive in-game merchandise. The Launch Tournament includes the top four teams in Europe and the top four in North America that have qualified from the SMITE Weekly Tournament Series that began on January 4, 2014. The event will be live-streamed worldwide via twitch.tv/smitegame.

SMITE is the online battleground of the gods. Players choose from a diverse cast of deities and use their unique powers to triumph over the opposition in player-vs-player matches. SMITE is a new take on the MOBA genre; rather than observing the action from above, a third person perspective puts players into the thick of combat. Instead of clicking the mouse to move, players use the familiar WASD keys to move and fight their way through SMITE’s dynamic battlegrounds.

Further information on SMITE tournaments can be found on esports.smitegame.com.

For more information, and to play SMITE for free, go to www.SMITEgame.com. Tutorials, game play videos, and more community content can also be found at www.youtube.com/smitegame.

Response to Ken Levine's GDC talk by @MattTaylor138

23/3/2014

How many great choose-your-own adventure books have been written? The promise of different stories and endings in every read is a great way to spend your time, but does the story ask any real questions or make a lasting impression on the reader?

I feel the same way about games that rely on decision making and moral choices made by the character, which often having a weaker than average narrative. With the market flooded by games like this, players are often put off when a title doesn’t follow suit. Criticism has been aimed at Red Dead Redemption and The Last of Us surrounding their endings and the lack of options that are given to the player. In my play-throughs, the endings to both of these games struck me hard, but were important to the story of the games. They made sense in the world that the writers had created. It wouldn’t feel right for the developer to give the player the option to change the ending, and would have felt disrespectful to the writing teams on both titles. Since then I’ve been able to share and discuss my opinions of both of these games, one of the greatest parts of a “shared experience”.
Picture
At this years Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, Bioshock creator Ken Levine told an audience that he believes that future of video game narratives will revolve around stories with multiple, randomised plots based on different needs and preferences of non-playable characters. With this randomised world, players choices will reflect and change the way the world reacts to the player. The characters in the game will express needs and wants, likes and dislikes, providing a unique experience each time a new game is played.
Picture
Levine went on to explain that this was one of the reasons that he shut down his former studio Irrational Games, saying he had wanted “time to fail for a long period when you don’t have 150 people who are looking at you and saying ‘Dude, what am i supposed to be doing today?’” Irrational was shut down last month, with Levine continuing with fifteen of the studios staff on a new project.

Moral choices and multiple paths and story lines are not a new element in video games. Recently, games like Bethesda’s Skyrim and Fallout 3 or Bioware’s Mass Effect have used player choices and morality with mixed results. Fallout 3 and Skyrim were both successful games, with both of the games beginning with the player controlling a unexpected hero, tasked with an insurmountable mission to save a sprawling open-world. It was this open-world that enthralled players; the environment was a character of its own. But it wasn’t the story that captivated players and was often the biggest criticism for both titles. With all the player’s choices and multiple story lines the main plot ended in the same place, criticism the Mass Effect series knows all too well.

When Mass Effect 3 finally concluded the popular trilogy’s story, gamers around the world threw their hands up in disgust. After all the choices and plot line diverging over the last two games, Mass Effect 3’s ending was predetermined. Players felt cheated, asking why they had made the choices in the first place if the writers were going to choose the ending for them. What right did they have to the players personal journey on the Normandy?

Ken Levine’s GDC talk has me fearing for the future of video games and their  great narratives and the storytellers creating them, being pushed aside for one-size-fits all, choose-your-own adventures. Like reading a great book or watching an amazing movie, I want to go on an journey.

But I don’t want to write my own story.

World of Warships introduces the Battleship USS Texas

23/3/2014

Along with the 100th anniversary, we are proud to announce the addition of Texas ship into World of Warships.
Picture
When referring to military ships, 100 years is a very respectable age. Given that, we are excited to announce that March 12 this year marks the 100th anniversary of the well-known battleship USS Texas. This grand vessel is a veteran of both World War I and WWII, having taken part in Operation Torch and the disembarkation in Normandy. Today, the World of Warships team celebrates this veteran ship and its heroic crew!

Along with the 100th anniversary, we are proud to announce the addition of Texas to World of Warships! The ship will appear in-game as a tier V New York-class battleship. When researching the module, you will see various changes that were made to the ship during its long service. For example, instead of lattice masts on Texas, you may see more modern tripod variations.

World of Warships How to; Fire major calibre guns

23/3/2014

Picture
Although naval artillery first appeared as a main armament in the days of sailing ships, it reached its highest stage of development in the first half of the 20th century. In World of Warships, military equipment revisits this historical period, and being in control of major calibre, that is to say, major artillery weapons, is an important part of gameplay.

For some classes of ship, such as battleships and cruisers, these guns are the only way to destroy the enemy. For others, such as cruisers equipped with torpedo tubes, or destroyers, they are not as important. Many aircraft carriers have no major calibre guns and their weapons are consigned to being secondary artillery weapons.
There are many different turret configurations, each of them designed for a specific task by naval architects. In some projects, the main goal was to provide maximum broadside firepower, in others – the most efficient forward firepower. The location of major calibre guns could also be dictated by technical factors like weight or other restrictions. As expected, turret configuration will affect gameplay directly and the differences between them will be obvious for players.
To find out more then go to the World of Warships developers Blog for some great descriptions of how to use main Warships Guns

Sony will soon be asking you take either the Blue Pill or the Blue Pill. With project Morpheus.

19/3/2014

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES "PROJECT MORPHEUS" - A VIRTUAL REALITY SYSTEMTHAT EXPANDS THE WORLD OF PLAYSTATION(R)4 (PS4(TM))

Sony will be bringing VR to the console it announced yesterday/today. Currently being demoed at GDC visitor will get a glimpse at the next evolution of gaming . The full release is below and to say it looks intriguing would be an understatement. With a VR precedent already being created by Occulus Rift developer support should be there and hopefully Sony will throw their weight behind the new product.

Sony's gaming future is looking strong and hopefully they will continue to innovate but for now we just have to be happy say wait and see the future is not that far away.
Picture
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced the development of "Project Morpheus" (Morpheus) - a virtual reality (VR) system that takes the PlayStation(R)4 (PS4(TM)) system to the next level of immersion and demonstrates the future of gaming.  SCE will continue development of Morpheus looking towards a future commercial launch.

"At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play," said Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios.  "Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators."

Morpheus enables developers to create experiences that deliver a sense of presence - where players feel as though they are physically inside the virtual world of a game.  Presence is like a window into another world that heightens the emotions gamers experience as they play.  Morpheus features a visor style head-mounted display and works seamlessly with PlayStation(R)Camera to deliver a unique VR experience right before the player's eyes.  Inertial sensors built into the head mount unit and PlayStation Camera accurately track head orientation and movement so as the player's head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates naturally and intuitively in real-time.  Furthermore, in supporting games, the player can use a PlayStation(R)Move (PS Move) Motion Controller as an object, such as a sword.  Morpheus will reproduce the player's hands and sword within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting off enemies with their sword in the virtual world.

Morpheus adopts 3D audio technology uniquely developed by SCE.  In addition to sounds coming from front, behind, left and right, Morpheus re-creates stereoscopic sounds heard from below and above the players, such as footsteps climbing up stairs below them, or engine noises of helicopters flying overhead.  Sounds that players hear change in real-time depending on their head orientation, creating a highly realistic audio environment within an immersive 360-degree virtual world.

Along with PlayStation Camera, Wireless Controller for PS4, and PS Move, Morpheus will deliver immersive breakthrough entertainment experiences to gamers through the PS4 system, leveraging SCE's expertise across key areas for VR - including display/optics, audio, tracking, control, ease of use, and content.

Developers will be able to create Morpheus content for PS4, a platform which has sold over 6 million units only after 3 months and a half of its launch, and is continuing to show strong momentum.  The Morpheus dedicated SDK is currently under development and will become available when ready.

During the Game Developers Conference 2014 held in San Francisco from March 19 through March 21, attendees can visit the Sony Computer Entertainment America booth to have a hands-on experience with Morpheus, which will be exhibited for reference.  Attendees can enjoy exclusive technology demo such as EVE Valkyrie (CCP), a multiplayer dogfighting shooter that uses virtual reality to give the player the sense of being a real pilot in an EVE Online spaceship, Thief (SQUARE ENIX Co., LTD.), which allows players to explore the dark shadowy world of the stealth action title, "The Castle" (SCE) that shows various VR interactions utilizing PS Move, and "The Deep" (SCE), where players can observe the waters from inside a shark proof cage.

Sponsored Video -  Noah 30 Second Trailer

15/3/2014

Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe stars as Noah, a man chosen by God for a great task before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world.
The influences of films can come from many different sources from comics to real life, books to myths and legends. Noah is a film which takes its influence from one of the biggest stories of all time; The great flood from the book of Genesis (chapters 6-9), in which God instructed Noah to create an ark which would be the salvation of the innocent. It is an amazing story whether you literally believe the tale or see it as a metaphor. This, then, is the basis for writers, Ari Handel and Darren Aronofsky (who also directed the film) to create a modern retelling of the flood myth with a new and exciting twist.
The writing team have worked together in the a similar collaboration on 2006’s, The Fountain. Handel was also the executive producer for many of Aronofsky’s films including Oscar winner, Black Swan and The Wrestler. With this in mind we are hoping to get an insightful look at the story which, in itself, is only a very short section of the Bible.  Our director has already described it as the “least biblical film ever made” and this gives the creative team a chance to tell the story in their own way.

Aronofsky has a great deal of talent and the cast that have been assembled to create his vision is no laughing matter. With names that read like a Who’s-Who of Hollywood big hitters including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, Frank Langella, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson and Russell Crowe as the lead, we should see a depth to the story not seen before in celluloid. However, the real star of the show seems to be the Ark that was created especially for the film. With immense dimensions comparable to the biblically described vessel, the production team really pushed the boat out to gain an extra level of authenticity.

Noah is looking to be a top runner in the film releases of 2014. It will not be without its critics but art is subjective and we would not have it any other way.

You can find out more about the film at the official website.

Sponsored Video - Standby for Titanfall | Gameplay Trailer

13/3/2014

You look up to see an atmospheric explosion and the gift you have been waiting for drops like a giant metallic smorgasbord of gun-toting goodness. This is Titanfall and we could be looking at the release of the next huge franchise in gaming. The hype has been created ever since we first saw news of the game at the 2013 E3 Xbox presser and since then the game has only grown in expectation. This was aided, in no small part, from the game’s Beta where players were able to get to grips with some of what the game has to offer. The internet and YouTube in particular were full of gameplay videos showing off the gaming experience. You can read our Beta impressions here.
Titanfall is the first title from the newly established studio, Respawn Entertainment, and will be published by Electronic Arts. They were however formed from the studio that brought us Call of Duty, Modern Warfare so they already have a pretty sizable pedigree.

We have seen mechs in games before so why is Titanfall different?

The best way to explain it is the way you (as a pilot) interact with your Titan. You are able to pilot your titan from the outset, or activate the Guard or follow mode. These allow you to utilise the Titan’s firepower while you can gain a handy kill or two on the battlefield. Of course, should you want to you can hop back into the Titan at a moment’s notice. Visually speaking it can be great to see all the different boarding techniques available for gaining access to your Titan, but the most important aspect is the fluidity of entry and how you are only out of the game for a matter of seconds.

Once you are in the pilot’s seat a whole new world of weaponry is opened up to you and you can take delight in the fact that you can be an FPS god. That is until you encounter another Titan and then the game really comes into its own.

Even though the Titans are roughly the same design, they do have class strengths and weaknesses that a good pilot can exploit. Mix these with various weapons and powers and you can really make your mech feel like an extension of the pilot. The Titan-on-Titan battles can be epic in scale. Even if the worst happens and your Titan gets destroyed, you can still eliminate the responsible party with your heavy weapons or by going rodeo on the giant’s back, exposing its brain and unloading a few clips.

With these new features and a universal entry standard, Titanfall is shaping up to be the first Next-Gen must have and could well be the system seller for the Xbox One.  With a host of future DLC packs in the works, this could be the game to rule 2014 and beyond. We will be bringing you more on Titanfall very soon.

Titanfall will be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. Launch date is the 14th March.

GameRanger Multiplayer Service Hits 5 Million Registered PC Gamers

12/3/2014

GameRanger, the PC online gaming service, today announced that five million users have signed up and created multiplayer profiles to play their games online with friends.

GameRanger provides multiplayer for over 600 PC games. Many of these games either had their original servers shut down ("end-of-life") or had massive networking problems with their existing systems.

More recently, GameRanger has become a popular solution for game developers distributing their games across multiple online stores without being locked into a multiplayer "walled-garden" on a single store. GameRanger allows friends to play each other, while still having freedom to choose where they buy their games.

"When you've bought a game you love, you should be able to keep playing it with your friends regardless of how many others are still playing," said Scott Kevill, president of GameRanger Technologies. "Server shutdowns, 'sunsetting' and 'kill-switches' are the dark side of multiplayer gaming."

GameRanger keeps multiplayer games alive by reversing the multiplayer decline and creating thriving communities.

GameRanger runs on Windows XP or later and is available as a free download from http://www.GameRanger.com

An Open Letter from CD Projekt RED about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Release Date

11/3/2014

Picture
Ever since we started working on the third installment in The Witcher franchise, it has been our aim to produce a title that would take our 11 years of experience in creating RPGS and distill them into a quintessence, into a game that would effectively crown those years. At the same time, we have wanted The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to expand creative boundaries, set new benchmarks, develop the genre as a whole. Ultimately, you, the players, must get an unforgettable adventure to experience in a vast, open world – and that’s most important. We’ve created a story that flows naturally, cinematically, rendered it in amazing sound and visuals, while preserving full freedom of choice – all for you. We knew this to be an ambitious plan, but believed we could achieve it by bringing together our team with its creative energies and current gaming platforms with their technical capabilities. A project this vast and complex would inevitably require special care in its final stages, manual fine-tuning of many details, thorough testing time and again.

We recently reexamined what we had achieved thus far, and faced a choice about the game’s final release date. The decision we made was difficult, thoroughly considered, and ultimately clear and obvious. We could have released the game towards the end of this year as we had initially planned. Yet we concluded that a few additional months will let us achieve the quality that will satisfy us, the quality gamers expect from us. Consequently, we have set the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for February 2015.

Dear gamers - we know many of you would have liked to play The Witcher 3 sooner, as soon as possible, even. We’re sorry to make you wait longer than you, or we, initially assumed you would. At the same time, we believe the game will prove to be worth the wait and meet the expectations you have of us. We believe The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be an exceptional RPG, one of the best, providing many hours of wonderful entertainment.

Dear shareholders – we are aware of the responsibility that rests with us and thank you for the trust you have granted us thus far. We firmly believe that quality – more than any other factor – determines a game’s success, and that the decision we have made is thus equally valid in business terms.

The Fullbright Company’s runaway hit Gone Home is making the highly-anticipated move to console, bringing the explorative Greenbriar family experience to a whole new audience. Heralded as one of the best games of 2013, Gone Home extends an invitation into an ordinary family’s mysterious past as a young woman who discovers an empty house that's much more than it seems.
"Ever since we released Gone Home on PC, we've had people asking us-- 'When's it coming to console?,” said Steve Gaynor, writer, designer and co-founder of The Fullbright Company.  “We've been looking and looking for the right partner to help us, and finally after much searching, Midnight City fit the bill. They have a great understanding of what an indie needs, how to get the word out about the game, and help us get the best versions of the game possible to all those players that have been waiting patiently to experience Gone Home in their living rooms. Viva la Midnight City!"

Midnight City, also announced Costume Quest 2, which you can find out more here

Double Fine and Midnight City, will be diving into Costume Quest for a second time.

In Double Fine’s triumphant return to Auburn Pines, our candy-crazed crusaders Wren and Reynold must once again protect Halloween from untold horrors, and grown-ups! Your favorite trick-or-treaters will come armed with a new batch of costumes they wear to transform into giant super powered fantasy Hallowarriors. Yeah, we totally just made that up. Fans of the original can look forward to a sweet upgraded battle system and a story that is unmistakably Double Fine.
"For the last couple of years," said Tim Schafer, Creative Director of Double Fine Productions, "Whenever Halloween came around, I felt like something was missing. No matter how many pumpkins I carved, apples I bobbed, or candy I ate, it just couldn't fill the big spooky hole inside of me. But then I realized what was missing: I needed more Costume Quest. And also, I really wanted a T-Shirt with glowing skulls on it."

Midnight City, are also brining Gone Home to the console read here for more details
