Sponsored Video: Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare

28/2/2014

Popcap are bringing the fun back to the gun with the latest Third Person Shooter based around the Plants Versus Zombies franchise. Keen to emphasize that standard shooters are passé, they have drenched their game in the usual saccharine sweetness associated with the PvZ canon. The visuals look to have the usual honed polish and glitter, but will the gameplay shine through too? With weapons akin to a drunken blend of Borderlands,Team fortress  and Wacky Races this could be a fresh skew on the shooter genre.
It seems that the zany weapons and madcap characters allow for a younger point of entry to the world of shooter games and actually seems like a clever way to grab a whole new audience who may be less inclined to the RTS style of playing. Popcap have a well known background in terms of producing accessible titles, but with deeper, addictive gameplay. Add to that the trademark humour Popcap are famed for and we could see a refreshing combination of fun and great visuals that could be a tonic for all Titanfall junkies.

With game features that are taking full advantage of the Frostbite 3 engine you will be able play 24 player multiplayer matches, take on the zombie horde with three online friends and, just for extra kicks, take to the Kinect, SmartGlass or even your controller in the all new Boss Mode. Customisation tools help you personalise your plants and zombies, and allow for you to add your own wacky slant to in-game characters.

All in all Garden Warfare could have the potential to go up against the big boys in the race to dominate the Xbox One titles.
This post has been sponsored by EA Games, but all thoughts are our own.

FuturLab Triples Its Potential With Abertay University

26/2/2014

This is great idea to help students get true experience in the games industry. Futurlab are known for innovation and seem the perfect partner for an ambitious university to partner with. If all goes well the games that are created by this partnership will be a success and we may see other courses take hold of this model and hopefully strengthen the UK game industry.
Picture

Following the success of its Velocity series of games for PlayStation Vita, FuturLab were invited by Abertay University to take part in a groundbreaking initiative that sees students embark on prototyping projects in partnership with the company.

Students from separate courses including Production, Programming, Art & Design were brought together to form two game development teams to work on briefs supplied by FuturLab. The two teams totalling over 20 students are now working on prototypes with the company; the results of which will remain under FuturLab’s ownership.
Picture
FuturLab’s satellite teams (‘Velocity Raptors’ & ‘Sasquatch’) at Abertay University’s PlayStation Vita Lab, a new initiative to get students ready for the workplace.
James Marsden, FuturLab's Managing Director said:

“As a small team of ten working hard on Velocity 2X - our most ambitious title yet - it’s been quite a challenge to remain focused on what’s coming next, so having an opportunity to effectively triple our workforce to create prototypes for a year without risk is fantastic. It’s also a great opportunity for the students as they’re able to benefit from mentorship and regular feedback to hit the high standards that we set for ourselves.”

Professor Louis Natanson, who heads up computer games education at Abertay University said:

"Our students benefit enormously from the experience of working with the professionals from FuturLab. We are very grateful for the care they have taken to provide genuine mentorship to our students."

Dr Iain Donald, Abertay University course lecturer added:

“Working with a creative, innovative and award-winning studio like FuturLab sets a level of professionalism for our students to aspire to.”

The two teams will be presenting their fully playable prototypes later this year, one of which is a spin off from the Velocity series, and one a completely new concept that carries the same design ethos as other FuturLab games.

The in-app store has worm packs, which are used to upgrade the powerups while golden eggs give extra lives. Additionally, the game has in depth integration with Facebook that enables a user to track highscores of his/her friends thereby providing a challenging and competitive game play experience. Gaijin Entertainment, the team behind war simulator War Thunder, have announced that the third round of beta testing for the ground force addition to War Thunder goes into limited beta today.

Bringing land battles to the war simulator has been anticipated for some time, with the current state of the game focusing on dog fights and bombing runs. Tanks are a popular addition to other online war simulators and hopefully Gaijin can make the land battles as exciting and intense as the aerial combat has been so far.

The beta participation is open for anyone who has purchased a battle tank pack from War Thunder’s in-game store, with the game looking to go into open beta at a later date.

The beta times were posted by Gaijin Entertainment from their website, but for anyone interested:
Current Test Schedule
◦ Monday - 01:00 GMT - 07:00 GMT
◦ Tuesday - 13:00 GMT - 19:00 GMT
◦ Wednesday - 01:00 GMT - 07:00 GMT
◦ Thursday - 13:00 GMT - 19:00 GMT
◦ Friday - 01:00 GMT - 07:00 GMT
◦ Saturday - 11:00 GMT - 16:00 GMT
◦ Sunday  1:00 GMT - 07:00 GMT & 11:00 GMT - 16:00 GMT
With Sony having the exclusive console rights for Playstation 4, the ground forces beta will initially be available only for those playing on Windows PC.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the ground force gameplay feels on the Playstation 4, with War Thunder being one of the best free-to-play games out there, and a blast on the next generation Sony console.

Risen 3: Titan Lords – Piranha Bytes Return To Their Roots With Classic RPG

25/2/2014

Picture
Piranha Bytes, the creators of Gothic and Risen, return to their origins with a new, classic RPG. Risen 3: Titan Lords pulls the player in to a handcrafted role-playing world full of rugged charm where every decision changes the course of the story. Risen 3: Titan Lords is set for release in August 2014 for the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system as well as Windows PC.

The key element of the cult Gothic series as well as Risen is the vivid world and the freedom to explore it. The world of Risen 3: Titan Lords will be diverse, authentic and full of life, providing the player with an authentic, classic RPG experience.

“Like a carpenter with a handcrafted piece of furniture, we put together the story, the characters and the landscape until it all fits and the player has the possibility to discover things all around the place. You can try out and find things that others might not. Exploration is the key to our game”, says Bjoern Pankratz, Project Lead at Piranha Bytes.

The world of Risen 3 is abandoned by all gods and suffers from the Titan Wars when a new threat rises from the soil. A young warrior is attacked from the shadows and deprived of his soul. He sets off to reclaim what is lost amidst the darkness that is spreading throughout the world. The banned Mages could be powerful allies on his quest. To get their help, he needs to find the Mage sanctuary on Taranis, also known as the Island of Thunder. Protected by the Guardians, the Mages search the mines of Taranis for crystals loaded with magic energy. Will the player join the Guardians to get in contact with the Mages? Or will he choose one of the other guilds in Risen 3 to reach his goals

Twitch Broadcasting is coming to Xbox One on 11 March

25/2/2014

Picture

Picture
The best broadcasting and spectating experience on any console is on its way when the new Twitch app launches on Xbox One on 11 March.

Twitch, the world’s largest video platform and community for gamers, with 45 million visitors per month and Xbox One, the only all-in-one games and entertainment system, are joining forces to bring the Twitch experience into the new generation.

Both Twitch and Xbox One are seeing blazing growth, with Twitch’s traffic skyrocketing and Xbox One off to the fastest launch in Xbox history. On the heels of the acclaimed “Titanfall” beta, which peaked at No. 1 on Twitch across all platforms with more than 65,000 concurrent views on 13 February, it’s time to give the world its first taste of next-generation multiplayer action. On 14 March when “Titanfall” launches, Twitch and Xbox One come together for the first truly next-gen Twitch experience, one that can't be matched by any other console.

Only with Twitch on Xbox One, can you broadcast and watch your favourite games live by simply saying “Xbox, Broadcast”. Once you’re done broadcasting, you can use Twitch to watch the games you love, chat with the players you follow, or even join a broadcaster’s game. Xbox One is the only next-gen console that allows you to archive your Twitch broadcasts and view live Twitch streams regardless of their original source.

“Only Xbox One offers the most complete Twitch experience, with access to any live broadcast and the full Twitch catalogue,” said Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate VP of Marketing, Xbox. “We’ve designed Xbox One to be the best place to play with features and unparalleled partnerships that deliver epic moments for gamers.”

“Over the last two years, we have seen the broadcasting and spectating of video games go from a niche activity to a pastime shared by millions,” said Emmett Shear, CEO and Founder, Twitch. “As the experience grows in popularity, it’s important to provide as broad a feature set as possible for the community. Microsoft has done just that by rolling out the most robust console integration of Twitch to date and setting a new bar for others to strive for.”

Twitch on Xbox One

Thanks to Kinect, Xbox One owners that have completed a one-time setup of their Twitch account can begin live streaming their game of choice simply by saying "Xbox, Broadcast" at any point during their time playing it. Kinect also allows you to easily include your picture-in-picture video feed and audio commentary along with the game broadcast, making it the perfect way to connect with your friends and followers. Xbox One's Twitch app is a great way to meet new friends too, as you'll be able to view the gamer card of anyone streaming from Xbox One and begin following them.

Your Twitch activity will appear in the friends app and activity feed of your followers, giving everyone a real-time update on what you're broadcasting or watching. You can even set up notifications for a heads-up when one of your favourites begins broadcasting and earn Media Achievements just by spectating as you normally would or by checking out any of the Xbox One games you haven't seen before.

During the broadcast, broadcasters and viewers will be able to interact (viewers can post comments in the chat stream, while the broadcaster verbally responds or assigns a moderator to keep chat running smoothly while they're busy playing). As an added bonus, broadcasters can invite friends into a private party from the chat stream, allowing them to voice chat outside of the broadcast.

Atlus and Zombie Studio shed some light on Daylight.

20/2/2014

Picture
By Matt Taylor

Upcoming survival horror title, Daylight, will be coming to Windows and Playstation 4 on the 8th of April, ready to frighten you and your friends in weird and unusual ways.

Implementing the Playstation’s “share” feature, which allows players to stream content directly to Twitch, the game will allow viewers of the stream to influence the players game through chat.

The example that the developer used talked about viewers typing the word “Meow” into the chat menu of the Twitch stream, resulting in the player experiencing a cat meowing in-game. Though this is a basic example (the game is still under development), it appears that the Twitch integration will allow more interacting between the streamers and their viewers. An awesome idea which will lead to interesting and unique experiences.

When it came to exactly what words would trigger events, the folks at Zombie Studios remain tight lipped, leaving it up to the community to find out which phrases will frighten their victims.

Couple all this with the procedurally generated Mid Island - home to the Mid Island Hospital turned prison, and the Forest, an open area of scrub and swamps - every play-through will be different. No two players will experience the same scares. There will be no guides to follow online; no help from YouTube walkthroughs.

Truly terrifying.

Daylight will hit Steam and Playstation 4 on the 8th of April, retailing for £11.99.

20/2/2014

By Steph Dumont

Head ups everybody! Invites are being sent over Xbox Live messages to preview the next Xbox One Update! The official word over on Xbox Wire:

"The team is working hard to deliver some exciting updates in March that will make Xbox One even better. But in order to ensure our customers have the best experience on Xbox One and Xbox Live, we need the help of our passionate community.

Beginning today, Xbox is inviting select Xbox Live members to preview new features coming to Xbox One in a March system update and future system updates as they become available, asking them to provide valuable feedback before the updates are implemented worldwide. Selected participants will receive a message over Xbox Live with a code to register. The next system update will begin rolling out next week to those who will preview the new features. Once registered, participants will be able to test the early features included in the update and provide feedback on a private forum and can opt out of future waves.

Like Marc Whitten announced last week, the updates coming in March will significantly improve the multiplayer and party experiences on Xbox One. We’re counting on our fans to share their input as we’re putting the final touches on the new features that we plan to deliver in early March.

Thanks for helping make Xbox One even better. We look forward to hearing your feedback on the system updates whether you are participating in the preview or not. We love to hear from you."

Woohoo! Updates! Lovely lovely updates! Let us know if you manage to get it and let us know what's going on in the inner workings.
