Steve Niles and Fiona Staples have created a wonderfully bizarre family adventure in Mystery Society.

I've already spoken about being a fan of Steve Niles' work.  Fiona Staples is another favorite of mine, from her work on Saga.  So I was surprised to find Mystery Society, written by Niles and drawn by Staples... back in 2010.  This completely flew under my radar, but I'm immensely glad to have found it.

The book is a fun, fast-paced adventure, filled with robots, skulls, government conspiracies, and lots more.  Nick and Anastasia were bookshop owners with an interest in the occult when they won the lottery and started the Mystery Society to investigate myths and legends.  The book starts with Nick breaking into Area 51 and doesn't slow down for a second.  There's a blurb on the back of the book that reveals more than I have here, but I really don't want to say any more so that readers can enjoy every surprise the book has to offer.

The script by Niles intelligent yet playful, full of great dialogue for every character and an enjoyably weird plot.  The art from Staples is every bit as vibrant and expressive as her work on Saga, a perfect choice for the book.

There's also a 22-page 2013 Mystery Society special at the back, with art by Andrew Ritchie.  Following the events of the main series, our cast of adventures seeks a trade with an eccentric collector of the unique.  Naturally, things go wrong, but that's when the fun starts.

Mystery Society collects the original five-issue series, along with the 2013 special, and I recommend this book to everyone interested in good, fun comics.
