If you are the only sane person left does that make you crazy? This is the dilemma facing Miss Fury as she seems to be the only person capable of seeing a huge spaceship hovering over 1943’s New York. However there is one other complication for Marla Drake she is not the only Miss Fury waiting for an attack to begin.

A quick rundown on my history with the Miss Fury character. There is none, so I’m entering into this series at issue 8 as a complete noob. The reason though I thought this would work is the way the story is told you catch up pretty quickly. Admittedly there are a few twists and turns along the way but all seem completely in keeping with the narrative and feeling of the universe.

Calling this book a genre mash feels almost like an understatement there are tones from as far afield as Independence Day, to the matrix to crime noir films with just a splash of Kill Bill. The chemistry of all these genres is managed admirably by writer Rob Williams. His regular quips help keep the tone light as the poo hits the fan. It is however the fusion of art and narrative that produce the high point of this issue. I will not spoil as you will know what I mean when you read the words “Behold Narcissism”

Speaking of art the union between Jack Herbert and Ivan Nunes make for some wonderful contrasts in the panels. You get everything from lasers to old Grannies and these help keep the script moving and highly enjoyable.

This issue has made we want to delve into the back catalogue of Miss Fury and I hope to catch up sooner rather than later.

A quick side note on the covers for this issue. The main and the variants are all really strong. However the main cover (shown to the right) is my personal favourite the reflection works brilliantly.

Vampirella; Southern Gothic #4

Although essentially a story about a vampire, the strong lead female with a sense of humour as well as being deadly fighter make this a good shout.
