Review - Mind MGMT #18Review by Paul Fiander

The ability to talk to animals is something from childhood in the form of Doctor Doolittle. He used the power to help animals when they had complaints and so was able to better their lives. Matt Kindt however has found another way for this amazing power to work, Espionage.
This issue after an ever so brief look at the main story arch focuses on a young girl named Lulu and her journey of discovery of both her own powers and Mind Management. The story itself is great to read although slightly predictable. However Kindt does such a great job of making you feel for Lulu that this is only a minor negative. Her ability is something truly wondrous but delving into the ways it can be exploited is an exploration into the way the human mind works. There are even communication problems for Lulu that she has to overcome The story is only but a part of the whole, next up is the art it’s not trying to be photo realistic instead the jack of all trades Kindt creates his own not static visual interpretation of the world Lulu is inhabiting. It’s probably nostalgia but the art reminds of books that I read growing up. There is a problem however as you find yourself carried away by the numerous attention grabbing features on each page like the art and notes in the margins that this really is a book worthy of numerous readings. For those new to Mind Management this is a great jumping on point. The story is pretty much self-contained and gives you a great grounding in the way the world works. I'm a newbie to Kindt's work in this series but I know I'll be coming back to this series for past and future issues. Even the back matter really matters as we get to see a case file for an African grey before the letters section. As a final flourish Kindt even has a little panel for Unity X-O Man at War, the book he writes for Valiant. This really is a cover to cover title and I do urge you to read it as one.
