Lady Killer 2 #3

Comic Review by Paul Fiander
Writer: Joelle Jones
Artist: Joelle Jones
Colorist: Michelle Madsen
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Why should I read Lady Killer?
In a word Josie, the housewife come assassin has a superhero double life except she is a hired killer instead of a bastion for what is right. From the very first few pages you are shown her ability for violence which allows artist Joelle Jones the chance to wow you, which she does on seemingly every page. Then when you add the 50’s color palette created by Michelle Madsen you are given a fully rounded visual treat.

Jones has become the sole writer on the project in this second series but the tone she created with Jamie S.Rich continues unabashed. Lady Killer had gone from strength to strength and really is one of the best series in comics right now.

Review

There is a part of me that wants Josie to succeed in everything she does, this however is a bit odd as she is a hired killer. However despite her less than healthy profession she is such a wonderful lead character that it is hard not to love her. This is a big part of the genius of Lady Killer the central character lies (mostly to her husband and friends), Kills (anyone she is contracted to) and still she drives you to root for her in every given situation. This continues in this issue as we get to find out quite a bit more of Mrs Schuler the elder.

Josie has been working with Irving and her life has become far less complicated as he “cleans up” after her. This leaves her more time with her family and mostly a nicer life. Difficulty though is on the horizon and it is so out of left field that it struck me almost dumb while reading. The true genius though is how much it fits into the time frame of the story showing a mastery of storytelling that is exciting to say the least. This also allows the artistic team of Jones and Madsen create the most haunting image of the series (look out for the lilac dress).

This issue opens up further stories as a number of threads have become loose in a way that they will need tying up in later issues. I can not wait for that to happen but for now I’m back off to read the issue just one (or two) more times.
