Juice Squeezers has hit the halfway point and decided to make jumps they may make your head spin. The story centres on the Basket Weaving Clubs newest recruit Billy, our bug rescuing new kid on the block has been brought into the fold and this starts causing waves from the off. The relationships within the group are set and a newcomer has the potential to rock the boat.

Obviously some love the fact that Billy is central to the location of the bugs and so they can begin daytime anti-bug operations again, but the real problems come from two opposite directions. One is due to loathing and the other comes about because of affection. Eric is the leader of the Juice Squeezers and he also has feelings for a certain intelligence officer, this leads him to resent Billy and Lizzy’s relationship. The problem is there may longer be a relationship there but you will have to read the issue to find out the unfolding story there. Suffice to say this issue really starts to look at human interactions, from the way we treat our rivals to those we care about. The fact the protagonists of the story are high school kids just makes the relationships feel more authentic as the usual overreactions of youth seem perfectly placed.

This is very much a get ready for the final issue exercise, we get some heavy exposition as to the great Bug destruction plan, along with some startling facts about the teams eye patched leader Bernard. David Lapham has quite a few threads to tie up in the finale of this miniseries but you get the feeling he is playing a strategic game especially when you take the elevator into account. It forms the focal point of the issue’s finale and helps give the issue both its set piece and moment of high tension.

Lapham's art remains as full as ever with detail flowing from each page. The backgrounds are full and when we do get to see the bugs they really are the highlight of the series for me. Each feels authentic and when they splatter Lee Loughbridge’s art really does create a feast of colour for the eyes to consume.

This third issue feels like a place setting endeavour with the pieces being moved in to position for the final encounter. Lapham has done this with his usual care but the real way to judge this issue is the payoff in the final issue. For now though I can recommend this as an essential part to the story but please do not jump on here.

Issue Rating 4/5
