Origin stories can sometimes feel quite formulaic, but in Furious Bryan J L Glass has taken the long approach to tell us the story of his heroine. This long game approach has helped us to appreciate Furious as she has grown in the last few issues. Too often the tug on the heart strings that is associated with the origin of a hero is used as the glue for the story. However here I more disliked Cadence Lark than I ever felt sorry for her, the path that took her to the edge is not one I feel much sympathy for. Furious though is a different matter.
The amount of times you hear someway say If only I had ten minutes with that Criminal I would show them the error of their ways (or words a little more colourful). Furious is trying and succeeding to fight crime with her own style. This to me is something worthy of the hero status, she may not be getting it right but at least she is trying. In this issue though we finally get to see why Furious is more deserving of the hero tag then most as she puts her body in harm’s way to fight her self proclaimed nemesis Perfidia. This meeting was set up at the end of the last issue and the kidnapping of a young child is the wheel that really sets the story in motion. The issue plays out between a look into the past as well as the goings on of the present, Glass manages to balance the two story-lines without either completely dominating the other. Both tales are intriguing to say the least but the present day story has a little something extra brought by the artwork of Victor Santos. There are a few key panels within the issue that really set out the artists stall and these mostly involve crashing to the earth. The way the motion is infused into the art gives you a sense of dread and exhilaration all at the same moment. However when all is said and done the art continues to be on par with the rest of the series and up to standard with work you expect from Santos. Furious has hit a maturity point in her development and so has her story. She is learning her trade and as readers we are learning all about her past. This Issue helps to weave these points together and we are left with a stellar issue filled with excitement. Furia looks to have fully arrived but is this the end or merely the beginning? My hope is she carries in her un-doubtable style. Issue Rating 4.5/5 |
