Review - Furious #1

Review by Paul Fiander
Writer:Bryan J. L. Glass
Artist:Victor Santos
Cover Artist:Victor Santos

Fallen Star part 1 “Life’s a bitch”

Furious
Extremely angry
or
full of anger or energy; violent or intense.
When you get to the back matter for the first Issue of furious, the above will make a bit more sense. Furious is not the Hero name Jessica desired for herself, she had wanted a title to go with her desire to help. Her name of choice would have been The Beacon but unfortunately life does not turn out the way most of want.

We meet our heroine mid rescue as he hurtles through the city streets in pursuit of a speeding car. The first thing that hits you is the continuation of the art from the cover to the interior pages. Victor Santos of Polar (Look out for a poster) fame does an amazing job of showing the action within the panels and makes the gore literally come alive. Yes for those repeating the word gore, this is a visceral comic where our heroine more than deserves her name. Her reputation for taking the law into her own hands gives citizens something to gossip about and the local news and opportunity to vilify her.

Enter the words of Brian J.L Glass, the book may have a light visual style with lots of colour but at every turn you are brought down to earth with the knowledge this is not a weak sauce candy coated story. The questions raised in the story carry things a lot of comic book fans and haters have been thinking and saying for years. As yet Mr Glass has not given us an answer but still if you read this issue with an open mind you cannot help but think I have always wondered that.

There is also some great insight into the way the media portray that most deadly of fancies fame. I do encourage you to read the back matter as there is a great description and also a very telling poem from Emily Dickinson which may go some way to explain the motivation the creators have for this 4 issue run and its a run I am fully on-board for.
