Hands on Impressions; The Crew vs Need for Speed Rivals

26/9/2013

Its Ubisoft versus Electronic Arts in the open world car racing game championship of the world. Both games were offering a next gen showing but which would take the lead and leave the other trailing in their wake.

The Crew

The demo on show is the same one we saw at E3, you begin with a little free roam then go back to base to customise your car. Al this is done on rails as the mods are chosen you, So my Porsche was given chunky tyres and a heavier chassis making a pig of car to handle. This was a great touch as those change should make the handling of the car worse and so I was pleasantly surprised it felt so realistic.

On the realism front The Crew brings you to real world locations, in this case Miami Beach filled with people and you are allowed to mow these people down with gay abandon. It sounds odd but in most Car games people are not on screen but thankfully The has left them on the street. Unfortunately the game felt a little flat to me and the open world tasks were not that engaging meaning the game did not win me over.

Need for Speed Rivals

A new studio has joined the Need for Speed world and with a little help from the masters at Criterion (view of Paul) they seem to have caught lightning in a bottle.
The eight player challenge I played was one of the best racing experiences I have had. In a huge and extremely detailed world it was four on four as the cops tried to take down the crooks in a classic bash and crash world.
The graphics were smooth with no pop in and amazing crash visuals.
The game felt very reminiscent of Hot Pursuit with the cops versus crooks gameplay. If the game can deliver on its promise of seemless transition from single to multiplayer then it will be the game to have in this genre.

Obviously we will have to wait and see on that front but for now I'm a Rivals fan.

FIFA 14 a truly next gen experience.

In the fight for my footballing (Soccering for those of you who do not care for the correct terms) money I have put my money in the FIFA camp and to find out why you can check out this earlier article.

However now it seems I have to make up my mind on where to play the league leader.

I was lucky to get an early day play on the Alienware X51 equipped with an i7 processor. As my opponent was introduced to me with the phrase 'he is the FIFA expert around here' I started to panic. I chose Chelsea as if I was going to humiliated I was not going to risk having it done playing as Arsenal. My opponent chose Real Madrid and he promptly tinkered with his set up while I sat there in a state of pre-match nerves.

Then the moment that shocked me the most, the total lack of loading time. It literally felt he chose his team and then we started. The skills section that is now ubiquitous in FIFA was there but not as loading screen just as a nice touch. This trend continued throughout the game with the breaks for goal celebrations (1 for me 2 for my opponent) being almost nonexistent

This is how I want to play a football game (and indeed all other sport titles) with no pauses while on the pitch no matter how minimal.

The PC is apparently comparable to the next gen sytems and if this is true then I think I will not even bother with the PS3 version, as the look and feel of the game feel sluggish when compared to the version I played.

The big question now is do I go for FIFA on the PS4 or do I upgrade my PC and play the game the way I experienced it today.

Below are some Screenshots to help show the graphics of the PC version and how they really are a setup on the visual front.
