When you see the cover of Elektra #6 you are instantly drawn to it due to the amazing art by Michael Del Mundo. He has been the main artist for the series since issue one and has also created some of the best covers in recent times. The graphic nature of the art mixed with the subtle colouring give a sense of theatre that was continued within the book. Issue 6 however has a new internal artist in Alex Shanchez and his style takes a pretty big departure from what has come before. This change is jarring and made even worse by the use of Del Mundo as the cover artist. I can see the desire to keep some of continuity for the reader but it feels a little like a ploy to keep readers interested in the book.

Please do not read this to mean that Sanchez’s art is without merit, it has a fluidity and sense of scale that is truly appealing and if he had been the artist from the get go I still would have followed this series. His work with the narrative supplied by W.Hadden Blackman create a truly fun read with a well crafted set up and then all the assassin fun a Elektra story needs to keep readers turning the page but the visual departure is still a concern.

The issues story continues on from Issue 5 and is easy to hop into as the opening summary is very well crafted giving you a grounding in the story as well as bringing you update at a comfortable speed. Even though I really enjoyed the opening five issues beginning the series here feels like a sensible idea as to avoid the art changes. As I said above the fluidity of the art is great and for a character like Elektra if Sanchez was not up to snuff then the book would die in my opinion. His battle sequences are very strong but there are times where his facial work feels off giving even new readers a reason to raise an eyebrow.

I am a big fan of this series and even with the changes in art I am happy to continue reading. As the start of an arc this is a good issue but be warned if you are not happy with change then this may be a series to sidestep for now.

Issue Rating 3.5/5
