Competition in comics is rife so it felt rather odd for Titan Comics to release two titles based around the Doctor on the same day. Obviously it remains to be seen if this release is just due to Comic Con and the schedule will adapt later or there is another much more feasible reason. The tone of the two books as well as their central themes appears like chalk and cheese. As you may know from the Tenth Doctor review the story revolves around Gaby (who is looking like a new companion) where here we see Matt Smith’s doctor as the central figure. This and a few things besides allow the two comics at this stage to stand together and still feel different from each other.
In tone this feels much more like an all ages story the tone in both art and story are light, there are a number of close up panels of the Doctor’s face with comical expressions. This gives you some idea of what the creators are aiming for. I will admit I do prefer the tenth doctors opening, it feels like a genuine start to a larger narrative. Here though we get an almost one and done with strands of the bigger woven in. For a new property you can the reasoning behind this approach but the Doctor is an established franchise and I can not quite get the reasoning behind the opening. That being said there is an interesting opening to the story here it concerns loss and a look into how we deal it. However due to the tone it does not really delve into the loss that a more serious book would do. We do though get a comical look at the stupidity that is the British House of Commons as well as creature that feeds on animosity. The stories resolution is quite nice and again the set up is there for the future. For the right audience this is looking like a fun series the tone is light with comedy elements woven into the narrative. It is kooky and off the wall and if that is how you like your Who then this will be right up your alley. The 11th Doctor is an interesting opening but for me I think the Tenth feels that one better at the moment at least, whether this will continue only time will tell. Issue Rating 3.5/5 |
