Adapting to a new city can be tough; you have to learn new reference points like streets and landmarks. However for Matt Murdoch it goes much further than that, firstly he is a superhero and secondly he is blind. By now I’m pretty sure most people know who Daredevil is, for those who don’t this first issue of the “All new Marvel Now” will give you some insight into the way Matt Murdock’s world functions.
The story opens with Matt giving Batman and Sherlock Holmes a run for their titles as the world’s greatest detectives as he is on the track on a young kidnap victim. The way Mark Waid harnesses his abilities to unravel the mystery is a great introduction into Matt’s specific skill set. His use of the special senses he has remaining make complete sense as he is able to detect minute details that others may miss. Of course it can be said that this is a convenience to suit the character but in hindsight this can be said for every fictional mystery ever solved. What I like about the story overall though is just like the opening it feels like we are on a voyage of discovery. For the new reader it’s about learning who Daredevil is, for the old reader and Daredevil himself it’s about learning how he will cope in a new city. Add these elements together and we get a strong opening chapter for Matt Murdoch in his new life. Daredevil has always felt like an old fashioned hero and this is reflected by Chris Samnee’s art. Along with Javier Rodriguez they depict the world in an old fashioned cartoon style. The art may be off putting to some who are used to lusher work, but for me it suits the story perfectly. My favourite part of the art is mostly when Matt is seeing through his x-ray vision, obviously this is stylised but you feel like you are entering into his vision of the world. Daredevil’s move to San Francisco looks to be a great new challenge for our lawyer come crime fighter, but as a reader I fell straight into the narrative without a problem. The move is still in its infancy and I am really looking forward to see how Matt adapts to life on the west coast. Issue Rating 4/5 |
